DR Jose - Is there actually some theory that it's better to send announcements in an envelope than via postcard?   Do people just not look at postcards as a knee-jerk reaction?

Yes, there is some "thing" behind the envelope vs. postcard theory.

A postcard can just be looked at and tossed away right then and there.  An envelope, however, "has" to be opened.  The recipient has to do some "work" before finding out what is inside.  Consequently, the theory is that once someone has put some energy into opening the envelope, then they will more than likely check out the contents of the envelope since they've made some sort of "investment".

There's also a sense of formality about a communication sent in an envelope.  And on another level, an envelope costs more money to send than a postcard.  More money must then mean a better product.

I mean, if it's worked for Ed McMahon and the Publisher's Clearing House Sweepstakes all these years...

Speaking as a Poltical Campaign consultant - a well designed Postcard (particulary a 4x6) is very effective in delivering a "sound bite" and in enhancing name recogition. 8.5 x 11.5 glossies folded in thirds also work very well (the reader can't resist opening the folder to see the rest). In both cases, really good graphic designers are worth their money!

Also envelopes with see-thru address windows are more likely to be opened than envelopes with address labels.

Here is a classic piece of Musso and Frank art for your viewing pleasure, taken by my very own cell phone.

Next time, take a picture of the Pounded Steak and the Lyonnaise Potatoes.

Does anyone outside a trailer park even admit to opening these things?

But, hmmm..I don't automatically open envelopes, especially envelopes with no return addresses, and especially envelopes with no return addresses that say "Please do not discard."  :)

There's actually a mailing our agent is about to do for us that we were originally talking about doing by postcards, but she felt that they should be done in an envelope with her agency return address.

Thanks for the insight, Jose and der Brucer.

Did you know:

Dalmatians can open doors on kitchen pantries

and pull down cardboard boxes

and select a bag of micro-wave popcorn

and open the foil pack

and open the brown bag inside

and eat all the un-popped kernels.

Then you have un-popped popcorn poop piles!

If it's a mailing promoting YOU, then YOUR name should be prominent in the return address! (Best in a bright color and distinctive font). (That is unless the agency name adds a cachet your name lacks)

Yes... And there are those like you who don't automatically open envelopes, so... You can't win 'em all.

Personally, I "prefer" an initial mailing done "envelope style" and then a follow-up with a postcard.  First something to tell me about the project - and in a bit more detail than what can fit on a postcard (press release) - and then something I can pin to my bulletin or post on the door of my fridge.

And as DR DerBrucer alluded to...  Some sort of identifying graphic/logo is a good way to tie those two pieces together.

*And just remember, all that junk mail that gets sent out...  A 5% response is considered a "high" response rate!  -But, then again, if you're sending out 100,000 flyers, I guess 5,000 new customers would be a good thing.

Why yes I do, derBrucer.  I have to have something to read while I wait for my welfare check.

My iPod is now on, and Guy Haines is singing When The Red Red Robin Comes Bob Bob Bobbin' Along.  It's one of my favorite arrangements I've done.

Can someone who has the Kritzer Time CD confirm that it sounds like crap - that it's all reverb.  What's on my iPod is that way, and if that's how the CD master was, then I have to go back and fix it.  I don't know that I ever listened to the final master, and it sounds like something went wrong when Grant did it, like a button didn't get pushed.

I'll check on it.  I have all three in my CD holder right next to my TV.

A bit reverb-y, yes, but not to what I'd consider horrific levels.

I agree.  Not horrific, but definitely noticeable...especially in the first song, but the rest don't seem to be so much.

Maybe it's just the iPod or maybe I did something.  I'll check out one of the pressed CDs in the car.

In other words, in the iPod it's ALL reverb.  Guy sounds like he's five blocks away.

Definitely not that bad on my CD.

Sounds more like a speaker/headphone jack issue... unless it's not affecting your other CDs, of course.
