I have been bemoaning the lousy direction over the past thirty years of operettas, particularly the Offenbach masterpieces. Last night I watched a 1982 production of
La Perichole from Geneva, starring Maria Ewing, Neil Rosenshei, and Gabriel Bacquier, and directed by Jerome Savory. It was so wonderful!
U love Maria Ewing's Carmen, but she's quite charming as Perichole, and Nei Rosenshein was wone of the handsomest tenors of his time. He sang late in his career as a Metropolitan Opera second-stringer. He deserved much better.
