Before heading off to wussburgerland, a short story to tell.

Today, in my checkout line, a young man had seventeen dollars to his name, as was trying to buy some necessary foodstuffs to last him until his next paycheck.  His seventeen dollars wasn't enough to cover what he wanted to buy, so we were trying to take off his bill what he really didn't need...but this was really tough.

The woman behind him in line smiled, and covered the difference, which was about five dollars, and then insisted that he keep the change.  He was very grateful, of course, not to mention surprised.

When I thanked her, as well, her smile got nostalgic.  "I remember being just ten cents short once, and no one helped me."

Reason enough.

That was a nice story. Thank you.

 Remember those old bumper stickers?

Thank you.  I just hope I recognize him this time...  There was a gentleman in the hall the other day, and I just could not place a name to the face.  Well, it wasn't until someone mentioned that "Hal was out in the hall" that it hit me... Doh!  I guess I'm so used to seeing him via his press photo.

And if anyone needs Vibes, it would be the final candidates for Magaldi and Eva.  I'll be sure to pass them on.

Easy as pie.

Mmmmm...pie...

DR Danise, thanks mucho for letting me know how to turn off the suggested recordings.  I thought I had gotten around them by clicking on each one of the shows that I didn't request and giving it three "Thumbs Down".  That worked for those particular shows (mostly Nickelodeon stuff), but I came home tonight to find about three hours of programs from the Golf Channel.

The Golf Channel!?!?

Have you tried searching for shows by entering bizarre keywords yet?  I'm surprised by some of the stuff I've come up with playing that game.

Good evening! I got back from Tim Burton's CORPSE BRIDE about two minutes before VERONICA MARS started, so I canceled the recording and watched it live. I was totally floored by the identity of the murderer. It was not who I had thought was the killer, and the show had a terrific last 15 minutes, very exciting and suspenseful.

Can't wait now for the new season to begin next week.

As for CORPSE BRIDE, I found it reasonably enjoyable. I think those who enjoyed THE NIGHTMARE BEFORE CHRISTMAS will like this, too. It has the same kind of vibe. Since NIGHTMARE came first, the originality of the look and tone of the first piece is missing; still, I found myself laughing a good bit (lots of clever small touches - the brand name of the piano is Harryhausen, for example) and the five tunes were pleasant without being instantly memorable. (Danny Elfman wrote the background score and the songs.)

This one is not total stop motion animation like NIGHTMARE was. This is a combination of stop motion and the more familiar CGI which co-exist in the same frame just fine.

And it's less than 80 minutes, so it doesn't wear out its welcome either.

The President's speech tomorrow night is causing lots of shifts into the prime time TV schedule.

I noticed that the WB is repeating SUPERNATURAL tomorrow night at 9 for those who might be interested in seeing it if you didn't record it on Tuesday.

I saw the ratings for last night's shows. BONES won its time period (against mostly reruns) with 10.5 million viewers.

HOUSE blew away the competition with almost 17 million viewers. (SUPERNATURAL only scored about 4 million viewers, but it retained 90 percent of its GILMORE GIRLS lead-in which was greatly pleasing to the WB.)

So, those shows at least are off to promising starts.

And looking at next week's DVD release schedule, I didn't see anything I was remotely interested in buying. I saw most of the DESPERATE HOUSEWIVES episodes twice during the season trying to sort out everything and keep the storylines fresh in my mind, so no need to buy that. And I just didn't see any single releases that I liked enough to want to own.

VixMom:

Actors Equity Association is the professional union for stage actors, singers, dancers and stage managers. There are many ways to get into the union - none of them overly easy. The "easiest" way to get in is to simply be hired into an Equity contract. Another way is to work your way through in Equity theatres in what's called the Equity Membership Candidacy program. As a non-Equity actor, an EMC has to work 50 weeks in an Equity theatre (usually in minor supporting or ensemble roles). After 50 weeks you can pay your dues and join up. After a certain period of time, members of "sister" unions may also join AEA.

Once you're a member of Equity, you're a member - just so long as you pay your dues. You're not permitted to perform in non-Equity roles, though many people scab if just to get some work. Sadly, approximately 98% of Equity stage actors are unemployed in their chosen field, and many choose to stay in the union even after giving up "the biz" because it's such an accomplishment to get in.

There are many other performance unions, including AFTRA (for film, radio and TV), AGVA (American Guild of Variety Artists [generally ballet, jazz & other professional dancers]), SAG (Screen Actors Guild [for TV & film]), AGMA (opera and orchestras), AFM (pit orchestras & recording musicians), SSDC (Society for Stage Directors and Choreographers), and IATSE (designers, crew, stagehands & front-of-house).

Loads of unions. And I'm not in any of them.

Yet. :)

DRs Ben, Jose, Elmore, and BK can certainly fill you in on the various unions. I think others on the board can, too, though I can't remember who's union and who isn't.

I haven't taken a Jacuzzi in weeks and weeks, so I'm taking one this evening, damn it all.

I've just been lazing about like a gazelle biding its time.

Doing all that tossing away stuff earlier really made me tired.

I'm off tomorrow to go to my nephew's wedding. I think it will be a good time.  It's in my home town which is 15 miles from the lake, so I'm staying at my parent's lake home with my sister's family.  I haven't even started packing, but it's only a 2 hour drive from here and there are no festivities planned tomorrow, so I'll do all that in the morning.

I'll have some access to the internet but not much, so I'll be going through BB and HHW withdrawal!

I do have a friend there with high speed wireless internet, so I'll probably be visiting them a couple times just to catch up on things.

Oh, I'll be back Sunday.  The cat's have their regular sitter coming in. She's great. She has a business called Critter Sitters and not only takes care of the pets, but cleans the litter box, gets the mail, brings in the paper, checks the house etc.  Since Callie is on meds, it's a real relief to have someone I know will take care of them.

One of the local Seattle evening news shows just announced that Robert Wise, director of the movies to "West Side Story" and "The Sound of Music" has died.  He was 91 years old.
