When I was a tyke I taught myself to type fairly speedily with two fingers of each hand on my mother's ancient typewriter. Years later in high school I took a semester of typing and was amazed and excited to learn about the home keys and all, and I quickly became one of the best in the class. Years later still, I had a job in L.A. typing insane parts numbers and such into catalogs, for which we had to be proficient across the entire keyboard (letters, numbers, symbols, all of it), and I was eventually passing typing tests on IBM Selectrics at 110 WPM with one or two errors.
Now I sit here pecking out this post on an iPad with one finger. Ah, progress!
