BK, that is absolutely shocking about the car being totaled.

It had really sounded like some surface stuff needed replacing. But...EIGHT THOUSAND SMACKERS? It had to have done more hidden damage, right?

And even still, what in the HELL?!

I think it's DR George who said he'd never heard of transferring license plates to a different car?

Obviously in California you can do it, and that's the case here in Connecticut, too - your choice - keep the existing ones or get new ones.

Yes transferring plates is an option here in Indiana as well.

When my beloved VW died (by sliding slowly and gently down the driveway on some ice and coming to a rest over some rough ground that did damage underneath), it was totaled, and the whole thing about "keeping it as salvage" was explained to me because that had sounded "fine" to me, too.

It's not fine.

"Salvage" means the car isn't legally drivable. You have to get all the repairs done, and then it still isn't drivable. You have to have it flatbed-hauled to the DMV headquarters near Hartford, where it will be thoroughly inspected. Not just inspected for the repairs, but thoroughly inspected as though being seen for the first time. If there's ANYTHING that doesn't pass, you have to get THAT repaired, and have it thoroughly inspected again. All of this hauling and inspecting happens at the owner's expense, and it's a gamble. That's why it's an option that very few will choose.

I kept mine, for continuity and not having to get used to a new plate number, and to save the cost of new ones. I can remember when that kind of thing was free, or nearly so, but those days are history.

Speaking of continuity, one thing I really liked in California was this:

I had moved from L.A. to Chicago, which I thought would be for a much longer time than it actually turned out to be, but I ended up being moved back to L.A. after just a year and a half. So I went to the DMV to get a new drivers license. Maybe I shouldn't have been surprised, but I was DELIGHTED to find them giving me back my former license number ... which will be burned upon my brain for eternity.

And why is that, you may ask? Either the delight or the burning upon the brain?

Because in the 70s and late-80s, when that took place, one's DL # was used as check writing I.D. - and more - everywhere. You didn't pass a check at a store or anywhere else without writing your DL # on it. It was a way of life. I suppose if checks were still a thing, this would still be the case. But one came to know one's DL # by heart. I last lived in CA in 1989, but you could wake me in the middle of the night in 2024 and I can still rattle it off.

And my CT one? I sort of know it, but I'm never secure in thinking it's right and when I need to give it to someone in person or online, I have to look at it to be sure. Whole different way of life.

I also think that if BK or anyone else is getting a replacement value from their insurance company that truly helps buy another car of similar value that you're happy with, that's a miracle in itself. When I had to deal with that a few years ago, I wanted to replace the car with another used one, and I had to practically double that "blue book" amount to find one that was acceptable. This was also, unfortunately, early in the pandemic and the costs of used vehicles was rising astronomically.

DR JANE yes that was the location of my eye exam last year.

The doctor was okay....it's just that the exam itself was time consuming and I just didn't feel the need to do it again just 14 months later.

I'm not sure what led me to this particular video, but I am immensely grateful to have watched it.  Disregard the headline if you, like me, don't give two hoots in hell about what Simon Cowell thinks about anything.   Still, he did like this, and it's stunning!

Yes, in California, that’s why you still see old license plate designs stretching back to the powder blue and gold ones.

In Delaware, license plate culture was really weird. Since you could keep plates for life, lower-numbered plates are a status symbol and people will pay a lot of money for them.

I'm up, I'm up - only about four and a half hours of sleep due to ABS (Active Brain Syndrome). All car related, of course.
