From George:

Or that the new cars have so much computer stuff that it's just more expensive to try to fix than replace. :P

True, except this was stricktly body work.

Of my really younger years, I loved the 1950s Thunderbirds. In the 70s my dream car was a Mercedes SL 280. And I'd hate to tell you what they sell for still, today. Outrageous. they were 9K in the 1970s. Today, the cheapest one I saw was just under 50K and yes I'm talking about a 1970 car. Some go for 300K

Cannot get the gal at the insurance company to call back or return emails - which is VERY frustrating. Have to sign the title and Robert is coming to drive me to the ups store to do so, but I'm confused and before I sign it I want to clarify a couple of things, then she needs my debit card so I can be paid once they pick up the old car today.

So, I just texted the original gal who was helping me - and she'll call me back shortly and hopefully can get on this woman's case for me. All I'm trying to do is have a five-minute conversation with her and to get this off BOTH our plates sooner than later and I want it all to happen so I can get the car before Xmas. All it takes is picking up the phone and calling. I'm sure she's dealing with a lot of other claims, too, but c'mon already - sent two emails yesterday, one today, all unanswered and two messages today.

I got to drive a friend's SL 280 occasionally in the 1979-1981 time period. I was living in their S. Beverly Drive condo for a short time in between two other places, and the car would have been a '79 or '80. You'd see them all around L.A. then, especially on the west side, and my God, the feel of how that thing handled. I think the words "solid" and "elegant" had to be taken out of storage, dusted off, and redefined for that car.

DR JANE yes that was the location of my eye exam last year.

The doctor was okay....it's just that the exam itself was time consuming and I just didn't feel the need to do it again just 14 months later.

Call me truculent.

I go every year to check if my eyes are healthy.

I think it's DR George who said he'd never heard of transferring license plates to a different car?

Obviously in California you can do it, and that's the case here in Connecticut, too - your choice - keep the existing ones or get new ones.

I always had to get new plates every time I got another car, so it must be a Washington state thing.

When my beloved VW died (by sliding slowly and gently down the driveway on some ice and coming to a rest over some rough ground that did damage underneath), it was totaled, and the whole thing about "keeping it as salvage" was explained to me because that had sounded "fine" to me, too.

It's not fine.

"Salvage" means the car isn't legally drivable. You have to get all the repairs done, and then it still isn't drivable. You have to have it flatbed-hauled to the DMV headquarters near Hartford, where it will be thoroughly inspected. Not just inspected for the repairs, but thoroughly inspected as though being seen for the first time. If there's ANYTHING that doesn't pass, you have to get THAT repaired, and have it thoroughly inspected again. All of this hauling and inspecting happens at the owner's expense, and it's a gamble. That's why it's an option that very few will choose.

Yikes! :o

I'm not sure what led me to this particular video, but I am immensely grateful to have watched it.  Disregard the headline if you, like me, don't give two hoots in hell about what Simon Cowell thinks about anything.   Still, he did like this, and it's stunning!

Usually when videos mention Simon liked the audition it is a good one.  This was sad, very moving, and excellent.

Also, the story of the Cameo gift sung by Chantal Kreviazuk is beautiful!

Thanks folks. I actually had buyer’s remorse until I saw what she did.

I'm glad you no longer have buyer's remorse.

I'm up, I'm up - only about four and a half hours of sleep due to ABS (Active Brain Syndrome). All car related, of course.

Of course.

I had to get a replacement plate because my old plate became illegible. My new one was just awful. I let it go the next time I got a car.

It must have been very old.

Speaking of continuity, one thing I really liked in California was this:

I had moved from L.A. to Chicago, which I thought would be for a much longer time than it actually turned out to be, but I ended up being moved back to L.A. after just a year and a half. So I went to the DMV to get a new drivers license. Maybe I shouldn't have been surprised, but I was DELIGHTED to find them giving me back my former license number ... which will be burned upon my brain for eternity.

And why is that, you may ask? Either the delight or the burning upon the brain?

Because in the 70s and late-80s, when that took place, one's DL # was used as check writing I.D. - and more - everywhere. You didn't pass a check at a store or anywhere else without writing your DL # on it. It was a way of life. I suppose if checks were still a thing, this would still be the case. But one came to know one's DL # by heart. I last lived in CA in 1989, but you could wake me in the middle of the night in 2024 and I can still rattle it off.

And my CT one? I sort of know it, but I'm never secure in thinking it's right and when I need to give it to someone in person or online, I have to look at it to be sure. Whole different way of life.

I also knew my WA state driver's license number, but the last time I had to renew, they gave me a different number because they changed the format of the number.  I hate that. :P
