DR Elmore, if you ever decide to relocate to Phoenix, you'll have an invitation to dinner at all holidays.

The day can't start more HELLishly than one with snow that's scheduled to arrive just as people absolutely must be leaving their houses for work and other exotic pleasures. We expected this one to be just another "dry" inch or so, which would hopefully blow right off with the backpack leaf blower doing the job. And so it was. But I literally was blowing it just ahead of Kristi and Nathan in her car (he was driving her to her office)... all the way down the 500-foot driveway... the result being that they didn't have to drive over any of it and pack it down into ice. Not one bit. Not one little tire track. I got them all the way to the road, and cleaned up a little more on my way back up to the house. All the while, it was still falling, but definitely lightening up. I finished the whole driveway and our little sidewalk, and we probably have the cleanest, most passable driveway in town right about now. Everything else is solid white (I think we got more than one inch), while we have here what looks like barely a dusting. Fingers crossed, knock wood, etc.

I can't compare this to BK's nightmare. They are two different things. But nightmares, both. I know I'd be ready to take another kind of blower to that insurance company.

Yesterday while driving around through HELL on my errands, I heard some of the local classical station's playing of the soundtrack (?) to "George Balanchine's Nutcracker" from 1993. I don't believe I've even seen that version, but what I heard on the radio was mildly amusing. Apparently the recording consists of excerpted sections, not necessarily in score order. I was not impressed with the conducting (David Zinman?), but I judge harshly because I'd been listening to Dorati and Minneapolis this past week, and I believe few can compare with his readings. Those recordings are brilliant in every way.

I still need to sit down with the score to compare all the versions I have for the little cuts taken in studio recordings. I've been looking forward to that, and to just hearing these great recordings again, and I'll finally be able to get to it later in the week.

DR Elmore -- I believe you have the links to my reel-to-reel copy of the Irving/NYC recording? It's still on my Google Drive if you need it.

If anyone else wants to hear this lovely reading of the complete ballet, give me an email address to send the link to. It's in two high-bitrate mp3 files, Act 1 and Act 2.

It was one of the things iTunes did not lose inm the chaos of a month ago. This and Dorati's 1954(?) recording with the Minneapolis Orchestra were the two complete Nutcracker recordings I grew up with, and they remain my favorites.

If you haven't seen the movie with the NY City Ballet and McCauley Culkin, it's a delightdul transfer of the Lincoln Center production.

Then that's the one I was hearing, right? Good. I might just watch it on Prime.

There was also a film of the Northwest Pacific Ballet production designed by Maurice Sendak, but it tries too hard to be Hoffmann's Casse-Noisette rather than Petipa's ballet so the score is re-adjusted to fit. The score is beauitifully conducted by Sir Charles Mackerras.
