I'm sorry to learn about Linda Lavin's passing. Around 1999, Symphony Space's Wall to Wall composer was Frank Loesser, and Jo Loesser asked me to work with Margaret Whiting and Linda to help them decide what they wanted to perform at the evening closing concert with orchestra conducted by Eliot Lawrence. This led to two interesting sessions with each lady. Margaret was indecisive and decided she would let her husband, porn star Jack Wrangler, decide, and Linda decided on "I Wish I Didn't Love You So," and we spent a good hour or two working up the arrangement I would orchestrate.

The concert was in late May, I think. and after it was over, Luinda called and invited me to her Tony Awards party in June. After that, she called me from her Florida home to tell me that she was sending me something.The something never arrived, and I never heard from her again.

Like in the movies about lost letters, I wonder about how relationships, even lives, were changed by the post office's failure to properly deliver things that are sent.

I've had that happen. I know the feeling of being pleased, or even excited, to hear that I'm going to be receiving something that would be special in some way, or something from a person who's special... and it never happening. MAYBE it was lost, but more likely they simply didn't get around to it, they've got more important things to think about... or whatever... and you can never go back and ask about it...

These days, though, isn't it easier with email communication being so common?

Is it maybe relatively non-intrusive to send a very brief (hopefully charming) email saying you mentioned you were sending me something, just checking in case it got lost - or that if it slipped the person's mind, it might have been inadvertent.
