Ok, here’s my issue with Wicked and it’s probably lame and fuddy duddy, but I had several decades and probably 15 views of The Wizard of Oz to affix in my mind its place in the culture at large. How many things from the 1930s can you still show little kids, and they will watch and enjoy? Not a ton. We watched it a couple weeks ago. Kids enjoyed. And granted that’s just MGM’s adaptation of the Baum source material. It isn’t sacrosanct. But it has stood as a cultural landmark for good reason.
Now, we’ve seen Wicked, and my kids see it as a direct canonical prequel to The Wizard of Oz. Despite me saying, well this is a modern take, unrelated really. Now my kids hate Dorothy and feel duped by the MGM movie. Devoid of context, the Wicked story ends up supplanting the MGM Oz and that’s really how they will see it evermore and there’s nothing I can really do about it.
