Tonight I’ll say “Happy New Year” when I really mean, “In 20 days we fall off into a cliff of despair. Please let the human suffering be minimal.”

From your lips.... ::)

Why not remake Paint Your Wagon (which I've never seen, but heard it's way off from the musical)?

They don’t remake failures usually.

But they should

I finished my 175th book of the year this morning, Han Kang’s Greek Lessons. Kang won the Nobel this year. Her stuff is like the descriptions of 3 Women earlier this week. It’s never what you expect. It always zags when you think it should zig.

Not only do you read a good number of books, but you also read books I consider slower reads.

My total count for the year came to 149 books though many were sorter books making my page count (which I can see on Goodreads) to be less than when I have read fewer books.

It was an ordeal. I tried blind baking the pie crust I made last night. The dough stuck to the parchment paper under the pie weights. (I use dried beans.) So I ran out and bought a pie crust. All of the other ingredients were in place.

Oh, oh.  I've never had that happen, just a puffy crust which wasn't a big deal.  How was your store bought crust?

I woke up feeling grumpy.  Like some others, I’m anticipating a lot of negatives next year. And we’re already seeing some of it. After the 2016 election I thought we’d need to really to put our stress management skills to the test. I no longer feel that’s enough. I now feel that political action is necessary. We need to vote these folks out.

Rodzinski, I quoted your post in the reader comments in the Times.  Is it OK for me to try to follow up with a post attributing the quote to you by name?  (Or should I just let it be without your name?)

In the reader comments under today's Metropolitan Diary column

Below is a statement I read on a chat board on the net. (It made me laugh at first, but then I thought: Who's to say where comedy ends and truth begins?)

"Tonight I’ll say 'Happy New Year' when I really mean, 'In 20 days we fall off into a cliff of despair. Please let the human suffering be minimal.' "

True, but it will only happen if voters are unhappy with these folks.

Good to know, if I ever bake a pie again.

If I remember correctly, Jane, not-yet-baked pre-made Pillsbury pie crusts are made with lard.  So, make sure you check the ingredients to confirm. :-\

Back from the dentist - newly crowned - it's good to have a crown. And for the first time in five YEARS I'll be able to chew on both sides of the mouth.
