Last night's DVD-off-the-shelf draw was The Italian Job, another I'd never seen. The young Michael Caine, the older Noël Coward (definitely worth the price of admission), and a single-scene almost-a-cameo Rossano Brazzi. Amusing and entertaining enough, but I don't know if it has real repeat value.

The snow band has moved a little to the north and we're getting some. It still might not amount to much more than an inch, but I think it's going to be a little more than they'd forecast.

Re the Time Lady:

My earlier memories are from my early teens in Fort Lauderdale, and I'm pretty sure it was a local bank that sponsored the service. The voice would give a brief one-line blurb about the bank, then give the time.

My more solid memories are from L.A., in the late 70s and early 80s. As I recall, that was a purely time-of-day service, not a sponsored thing, and the message would update every ten seconds. "At the tone, the time will be eight-twenty and ten seconds (beep), at the tone, the time will be eight-twenty and twenty seconds (beep)," etc. You could listen to several of those, then it would hang up, but that would let OCD people like me set their newfangled prized Casio digital watch to EXACTLY the right time, and it was supposedly coordinated with the official time clocks in Colorado or Washington DC or such places.  :)

I don't recall calling the Time Lady, but I remember Dial-a-Joke, which was quite entertaining.

But wait, there's more!

Once I really got into the habit of using the service, I learned that there was another number for brief weather updates. The phone number was similar enough that you could remember both of them easily. I have a 1984 South Bay phone book here (worth its weight in gold to me) that lists (213) 853-1212 for the time. I don't see the weather one, so some research is in order. But I think the -1212 was the same, with maybe only a one-number variation in the prefix.

I guess the So. California weather was such that you could do a one-sentence update and have it be accurate enough.  :)

The 853- didn't sound familiar, but I've always remembered the -1212.

I also might be remembering this from a different area in L.A. I likely dialed it from Beverly Hills in the late 1970s and from West Hollywood in the late 1980s. Probably different prefixes.

Maybe that would apply to actors and crew in shows that had Monday off after a 4-show weekend.

There are at least 8 inches of snow out here, and the roads are extremely treacherous.

The news at noon showed many car and bus accidents, and we have been strongly advised to not go out.

Lots of children on sleds in my parking lot, having lots of fun.

I, however, am not having fun.

Pretty sure that I will not be able to keep the very important appointment with the surgeon tomorrow, as everything is predicted to freeze over tonight.

Whenever I see the name Asia Argento, I think of Anthony Bourdain’s suicide.

I came up empty on a weather-info phone number as far as the 1984 Redondo Beach phone book is concerned. They list the time-of-day one in a few places but nada on weather.

Same here DR GINNY.

Our county is under a Warning meaning only essential travel!

Enjoy resting at home, not that you are truly resting when you need to shovel snow.

I shoveled the porch and sidewalk but NOT the driveway.....i would guess there's about six inches of the stuff- maybe a bit more.

Do you need your driveway clear in order to go anywhere?

I liked calling the Time Lady to check my watch and clocks were acurate.  I can't remember that I ever knew a number to call once we left California.
