A dance instructor and friend who had surgery recently has been out of commission since. But he told Joy he wanted to see her and me today at the hospital. I woke up in the middle of the night and thought if wants to see us, it wasn’t good news. And it wasn’t. He’s going on hospice in a couple of days.

The day so far: The drive there - even on the GPS there was a warning about the Palisades fire impacting traffic. I'd checked a couple of traffic sites - all showed every off-ramp from Getty Center to Pico closed.

GPS tried to get me to go the same way I'd gone last time, getting on the freeway from a Sepulveda onramp rather than Ventura Blvd. I paid no attention, because that's where the truck had creamed my car. I went to the Ventura Blvd. onramp expecting a ten-minute wait, as always.

There was no wait at all and I was on the 405 in twenty seconds.

While traffic was slow, it was always moving. No onramp anywhere was closed. GPS warned three times of police being up ahead, as well as a stalled car. At no time were police anywhere nor was there a stalled car anywhere.

Once past Sunset we were moving faster and once past Wilshire - no traffic to be seen and clear sailing right to the doctor's office. The GPS predicted drive time had been forty-seven minutes. Actual drive time was thirty minutes.

Appointment was fine - he did some re-testing and that was about it. But he needs the little blood test and then the open MRI so I really need to book those things.

Drive time home with zero traffic? Twenty minutes. At no time going or coming did I see smoke anywhere. So much for being near and jumping the 405.

I went to Gelson's and got creamy tomato soup, turkey breast, a little roast beef, rye bread, and some salad.

I wrote a couple of new pages and the next two or three should be simple, as I know exactly what they are.

Dinner tonight is a slice of cherry pie. It's not great, but it's good enough.

Listening to a collection of New Yorker articles called Rogues. In it, there's a profile of the TV producer who gave Trump his break in The Apprentice. There's a grotesquely accurate depiction of Trump in the piece in which he is described as a poor person's image of a rich person. In another article, dealing with arms dealers from the Middle East, there's a description of the vulgar displays of wealth these indirect murderers make. Somehow, their tastes are no different from Trump's.

Was the producer Mark Burnett?
He has kept many tapes from the filming of The Apprentice secret, as they do not show Trump at his best, to put it mildly.

Trump has rewarded him by naming him as Special Envoy to the U.K. in his new administration.
