TOD: The Towering Inferno

I remember seeing that, and The Poseidon Adventure and Airport on TV when I was a kid.  Those were probably my earliest.

I remember that both Deep Impact and Armageddon, which were both about asteroids in a direct collision course with Earth, were released within a couple of months of each other.

Deep Impact was a much better movie.

And just the year before, both Dante's Peak and Volcano (with similar plots) were also released within a couple of months of each other.

I didn't see Volcano, but Dante's Peak did have some pretty ridiculous moments.

I was up at 5:45 and am drinking my second cup of coffee, putting off the getting bundled up and going out there.

Fortunately, and surprisingly, I looked out and saw the driveway had had a first pass at being plowed. Our guy must have done that while I was asleep because ordinarily there's no way I wouldn't hear it. I wonder what ungodly time of night or morning he was out there. But he's got several properties in town to do, so I shouldn't be surprised he needed a good head start.

That by no means cleans everything up, but it's a wonderful start. I'll be starting up the snowblower and doing the parts he can't get to, then I'll go up and down the driveway at least a couple of times, widening and cleaning up the edges, etc. We've got to get it all as clear as possible, because whatever's left there is going to be there for days, given these ungodly subfreezing temperatures.

I know there are some "old" movies that qualify as early disaster films, but of the era we're talking about, I think Poseidon Adventure was my first. And for some reason, I think I first went to it somewhere in Westwood, but not one of the big theaters. No idea why. But I sure remember the film and the excitement of it all. I know I saw Earthquake as soon as it opened at the Chinese.

Oh. As for snow, we didn't get as much as "they" thought we would. I think there's three to four inches out there. And that's enough, thank you.

It's laying in wait for me.

Waiting to mock me.

Counting the minutes till I appear.

It's very quiet here at the moment: the TV is not on, and I am not in the mood to listen to music.

I did have a scare around 5:00 this morning. Thatch was lying next to me, and he suddenly had a spasm, like a noiseless sneeze, that shook his body. Then there was a second, almost immediately after. He is now in his eighth year, and with his heart issues I worry about him. I never expected he would live this long and now I'm terrified that his borrowed time is running out.

Annabelle, by the way, is back to leaping up onto the filing cabinet to reach her bookcase hideaway.
