STRAINING CREDULITY
« on: September 23, 2005, 12:07:48 AM »

Well, you've read the notes, you've strained the notes as well as credulity, and now it is time for you to post until the cows come home - they're just mincing some credulity and then they'll be right here.

And now - Dino at the piano.

Why is George just sitting there like so much fish?

Has Ann caught up?

Why is George just sitting there like so much fish?

Because I'm catching up...and watching Craig Ferguson.

"Do you want to know the real reason that Mouse House managers are finally softening their position on this somewhat controversial 1946 release (SONG OF THE SOUTH)? Not because they've suddenly realized that this Walt Disney Productions picture is a great unreleased classic (Or even a particularly good film). But -- rather -- because bootleg "Song of the South" DVDs have continued to turn up on eBay.

I kid you not, folks. It was this that finally convinced Disney execs that there's a potentially huge market out there for a legitimate DVD of this movie. The lengths that people would go to (I.E. Bidding on an unauthorized copy of the Japanese version of this film) in order to get their hands on "Song of the South."

So next year, when you're getting ready to pop the authorized version of "Song of the South" into your DVD player, please remember to pause for a moment and thank the bootleggers who actually made this disc possible. For it was only through their illegal efforts that the Walt Disney Company officials finally came around to thinking that: "Hey, maybe there really is some money to be made off of producing a legitimate DVD of this motion picture."

On eBay a couple of years ago, someone had a Japanese laserdisc copy of this movie that was a former rental (it didn't have the Japanese subtitles during the songs that all of the other laserdiscs had).  Anyway, there was a Buy It Now price of $1,350!!  The bidding got up to about $800 when someone actually bid $1,350 and bought it!  I couldn't believe that someone would pay that much.  All I kept thinking was that that's $1,350 that the Disney company isn't getting...from just one person...and that there were other people willing to pay at least $800!!

Who was it here who was haing the discussion re the book Kite Runner, was it you DR Ginny or was it DR Jane?

In any event, I borrowed a copy of it  on CD (unabridged and read by the author) from my library and just finished listening to it yesterday.  What a sad story and it gave me a different perspective on the whole Afghanistan thing.

The word of the day made me think of this book, that and of slingshots......

Mildred Pierce is one of my favorite movies although my hand is always itching to give someone a good smack!

I envy you getting to see it on the big screen,  I may have to rent it!

I have been listening to Woman of the Year, courtesy of DR Matt H.  Queestion for DR's do you think a show like this would be able to survive in Broadway these days ?  It seems to me that the main premise is too dated for today's audience, and the songs aren't "big" enough,

I've just finished " The Songwriters" - Charles Strouse.
How amazing was young Allison Smith. Did she ever record anything I wonder.  I gather she is a cast member of "The West Wing"

Good Morning!

I'm up...  Eh...

One telephonic conversation down, about two to go.  Eh...  *Although, one of the phone calls I have to make will be a "happier" one.  The other one is to my bank.  I need to call my home branch directly and they don't open until 9:00.  Eh...

But I'm up...

As for the Friday Media Report...

Eh...

;)

Actually, I do have to give the OCR of Dirty Rotten Scoundrels a listen today since I'm sitting in the pit tomorrow.  I'm just sitting in, not playing.  But it would be nice to have that sound recently in my ears - if that makes any sense.

I'm listening to AccurRadio right now. No plans for listening or viewing. I have to work tomorrow (as usual till October 22nd), then I'm seeing Fran's Bed w/Mia Farrow tomorrow evening. It's the first show in my Playwright's Horizons subscription. Haven't heard much about the show other than it's Miss Farrow's return to the NY stage. Sunday I will be at the BCEFA Flea Market for a bit. I usually go but try to go earlier because sometimes the crowds are just too much. The older I get the less tolerance I have for crowds. What am I doing living in NY??? After BCEFA we will be having dinner with a friend down in our neighborhood. And then the whole week starts over again.

Mr. Piano has at 8:42 reached the milestone of 8888 posts. That will change the next time he posts, of course.

Well, Thank You, DR Ben for the heads up/notification on my pianistically-related plateau!  Maybe I'll play 8888 in today's lottery...  After dealing with my bank this morning, winning the lottery would be most welcome indeed.

However, I do have to say, I slept rather soundly last night.  And even though I'd say I only got about four and a half hours of real sleep last night, I'm feeling quite rested.  So I got that going for me this morning...  Eh...

OK - That's enough of that.  I just hate dealing with other people's ineptness - especially when it comes to financial matters.

Well, the phone calls are done.  Problems have been resolved - for now.  And issues have been dealt with.  And now it's just a matter of waiting.  Oh, and maybe a bowl of cereal would be good right now too.  Maybe that is why I sense a headache coming on.

Re WOMAN OF THE YEAR:  It felt like a musical that was very much of its time, the way shows like DO-RE-MI and HOW NOW DOW JONES were very much of THEIR times.  But I was at law school when WOMAN OF THE YEAR was trying out in Boston, and the excitement over Lauren Bacall being in town in a new show was palpable.  I suppose a recent equivalent would be Hugh Jackman in BOY FROM OZ, that's the closest I can think of, or maybe Nicole Kidman in THE BLUE ROOM.  I don't know how the Bacall glamour circa early 1980's translated to New York, but in Boston/Cambridge/etc. there was Bacall excitement in the air.

One of my favorite cheap TV commercials had Lauren Bacall telling the viewer to phone for tickets (back in the days of dial phones), saying just dial 555-5555 for tickets, adding "You know how to dial, don't you?  Just put your finger in the holes and" - then she made a motion with her finger of turning.  The ad was actually seen as a little suggestive and was much talked about in Boston.
