I've always considered Lorenz Hart the poet laureate of the broken heart. Sondheim continually kicked Hart's lyrics around, but it's his opinion, not mine, and I'd be happy to tell my old pal Steve where I think he's written a dud or three. Still, it seems pretty apparent that Steve's original lyrics for "We're Gonmna Be All Right" were modeled on Hart's "He and She."

So, Rodgers & Hart remain my favorite songwriting team. Unlike his glorious work with Hammerstein, Rodgers' wonderful tunes really swing to Hart's lyrics, and, when intended, Hart's lyrics break my heart more often than Hammerstein's do.

Do I have favorites? Perhaps, but they change daily with my moods. I'm very, very fond of the wonderful "Every Sunday Afternoon" from the late (1940?)  Higher and Higher (Wash the dishes, dry your hands; Change your wishes to commands) and the heart-breaking "Bye and Bye" from the 1925 Dearest Enemy (Every cloud just flies on, Love is on the far horizon; You'll be my sweetheart bye and bye); I also love the silliness of "I'd go to hell fa ya, Or Philadelphia."

I have read that youngsters today cannot read cursive writing.

There's a similar trend about reading hand-written music.

DR Elmore, I'm always fascinated with your mentions of Appalachia.

Our backgrounds are similar, in that I was born and grew up in Columbus, with Appalachian roots on my mother's side, but yours was Kentucky and ours was the West Virginia Appalachia. But when my dad remarried some years after my mom died, his second wife had strong Kentucky Appalachian roots. I would have liked it if they had driven me down into and around her hometown territory which was somewhere directly south of Cincinnati, maybe 90 minutes away, but the timing for that never worked out.

My grandmothers farm outside Louis, Kentucky, was not far from the West Virginia border.

My grandmothers farm outside Louis, Kentucky, was not far from the West Virginia border.

My mom's family were centered in the Morgantown WV region, and I've gotten to know that area fairly well. There was a branch of that family in Charleston that I have a vague memory of visiting, but I never knew them like the others.

She and her parents moved to Columbus in the mid-late 1940s because they knew there was better employment to be found there after the war. That's how she ended up meeting my dad, who had grown up in Columbus and had returned from the war and was going to the same church.

Ah, family history stories...

Petey the PT Cruiser and Dennis the Smart Car both started up - so I guess I shall go to the getting place tomorrow morning.

There are a few flakes of snow falling but they won't amount to much.
