DR John G.:

I keep forgetting to ask this. You posted a beautiful picture of the swiss cheese and onion pie, and if you said anything about how you liked it, I completely missed it. What was the verdict?

I really enjoyed it. It would work for breakfast as well as dinner. The recipe I used was to make two, but I only made one; everything halved worked well. I didn’t cover the crust while baking, which I should do the next time.

If you want meat, turkey beast would complement it nicely. A tomato salad would be a bright contrast to the creaminess of the pie. Or an endive salad with a tart vinaigrette.

Mom used to make a wonderful endive salad. But that was something that we never grew. I wonder why. We grew so many things.

She used curly endive. She never paid attention to Belgian endive. A chef friend’s wife once brought a Belgian endive salad with avocado in it to a party. I loved it so much, I copied quite a few times, including once when Mom and Dad were visiting. She loved it. She never made it herself, but she asked for it several times.

And that concludes my performance in Belgian.

(Which ain’t a language, I know.)

Back from a double dose of panic-shopping.

Lord.

Big storm moving in tonight, and tomorrow's the Super Bowl. What better time to shop?

DR ELMORE I hope your Saturday gets better!

I appreciate that. However, it hasn't. Now the TV keeps coming on and off. I think it's dying and I cannot afford a new one.

I've never seen the Franju, and I only recently saw Peepng Tom for the first time. It's too unbsettling and I have no urge to see it again.

I saw both Black Sunday and Psycho in their first release, and both still creep me out. The last time I saw Psycho was around 1980 at the long-gone Carnegie Hall revival house. Much as I love it, I don't think I need to see it again. I think my DVD of Black Subnday has both the original Italian and American releases.

From DR Laura,

Quote
I spent the day at the arboretum. I hadn't been there in quite a while. There is a family of coatimundis that has been hanging around. And a hooded skunk.

Cute, especially the hooded skunk.

What will you use to cover the crust, foil?  Would you cover it the entire time or just part of the time and then finish without being covered?

I tried to tell Tony Roberts how wonderful he was in the kast revival of The Royal Family. He was impatiient and rude.

Interesting, Larry.

Tony Roberts was the only celebrity that I met over many years who was incredibly rude and obnoxious.

DR Laura, the NY Historical Society has an exhibition on Flaco, the Central Park Zoo owl that was freed by vandals. I would love to see it, but there's no way.

Finding Flaco is a wonderful book.

I followed his every move, and was heartbroken when he died.

FLACO THE EURASIAN EAGLE-OWL landed on Fifth Avenue in Midtown Manhattan bewildered and afraid after his enclosure at the Central Park Zoo was vandalized on February 2, 2023. Many feared for his safety and welfare because he could not fly well and had never hunted before. He evaded rescue for the next two weeks and began to embrace his new life as a wild owl. Flaco initially settled in Central Park and later explored neighborhoods around Manhattan, enchanting New Yorkers everywhere he went. He sadly and unexpectedly died a year after his release on February 23, 2024, when the hazards of the urban environment finally caught up with him.
