As I think I made clear, it may just well have been this production of the show. However, thus far it's gotten excellent reviews from the usual LA critics. I probably would have enjoyed the York more, but there are shows that I love that others don't and there are shows that others love that I don't - and the world goes round. Funnily, the piano player, playing an electric keyboard, did occasionally program bass into it. Not quite enough. But not every production of a show is equal.

As to yesterday's finishing up of the keyboard cleaning and reassembly:

I won. Or mostly won, for which I thank the universe. I'll just need to open it one more time and install a couple of replacement thingies when they arrive.

I had the brilliant idea of fixing a bad note in the middle of the keyboard by literally moving the thing that was probably causing it to a different part of the keyboard, and it worked. It's a novel opportunity, "moving a problem", but in this instance it can be done. Doing so proved that the problem was what I hoped it was, because it's easily fixable with readily available replacement parts.

(Without attempting to explain, I have two of these coming:  https://syntaur.com/Part-4156-Contact-strip-12-note)

I wonder how an L.A. area production of something like this ever came to skimping on one of only four musicians.

Having just heard a bit of the cast album - well, whole different ball game - piano, harmonica, cello, violin, guitar/banjo/mandolin - they must have expanded it for the album?

Also, I didn't mention that the York production, prior to the move to New World Stages, starred Emma Degerstedt as the potential nun. The girl I saw was very good, but Emma is fantastic. She plays in the Outside the Box Taxi Driver episode as Betsy. Also, of the LA company, I liked the sheriff best - beautiful voice, subtle with the comedy - I'd use him for Kritzerland.

I just took out the program from New World Stages.
No cello listed, but:

Conductor/Piano/Harmonica:  David Hancock Turner
Guitar/Banjo/Mandolin:  Justin Rothberg
Double Bass:  Joseph Wallace
Violin/Mandolin:  Martha McDonnell

It's sad hearing how extensively the Long Beach area has gotten leveled and rebuilt. I knew it had happened, of course, but hearing the extent of it is always disheartening. I sadly never knew the amusement park. I went to a few things at the civic auditorium, I was in Acres of Books a couple of times, and I enjoyed the Queen Mary when the Spruce Goose was there (the idiots even let that go). But as for getting to "know" the town, I just wasn't there enough.

Met a friend this morning for breakfast at a chain called the Black Bear Diner. No surcharge for eggs. Very nice meal.

Good to see Steve. He’s starting radiation today for some skin cancer on his head.

TOD:

I can’t eat a huge steak anymore, but my preference has always been for a well-marbled ribeye.

I have been known to indulge at high-end places like the Palm, Ruth’s Chris and Morton’s, but I actually prefer to grill my own. Costco’s regular cuts of ribeye or New York strips are preferred with Montreal seasoning on top. Five minutes for each side for a perfect medium rare. I then like to follow the Ruth’s Chris style of crowning it with melted butter after it has rested.

Since I live in Texas, no discussion of steak is complete without mentioning chicken-fried steak. I’m a fan of hammering it thin and breading it before frying it up. But I always want the cream gravy on the side until I determine if it’s handmade. Store-bought or mix gravy is too boring and flat to eat much of it. I would never order it at a chain place like Cracker Barrel.

DR Iris I'm very glad your radiation treatments are a breeze compared to chemotherapy and surgery.  Vibes they stay that way and there aren't any complications.  Most of all, MEGA VIBES they work!

We ate at original Black Bear Diner in Shasta.  At the time I didn't realize it was a chain.  Our first experience was our best.

Vibes to Steve!

Giving up steak was one of the easier foods for me to stop eating.  I didn't dislike it, and when ordered it was always medium rare without anything on it.  A baked potato with sour cream and chives was the side dish, plus vegetables if offered.  I enjoyed the potato with the sour cream and chives more than the steak.  There was a restaurant in San Diego that also had a delicious dish of mushrooms in butter we ordered.  Because of the mushrooms I think it was my favorite steak house.
