I often like to have something on the TV to fall asleep to. For that to work best, it needs to be something I'm interested in to some extent, not just any old thing, because actually concentrating on it for a bit will get my brain into the right state for getting sleepy and dozing off.
So last night on TCM there were a few '70s winners: All the President's Men, The China Syndrome, and Network. I love all the great '70s films of this ilk dearly, so this seemed ideal. I began with the second half of the first movie, and watched the second until I finally starting dropping off during its latter portions. That was already a little bit too late for getting a good sleep before morning, and I made it worse by getting up afterward to visit the necessary, take a drink of water, and adjust the thermostat, all of which completely woke me up. I then stayed awake through quite a bit of the third which went into the wee hours, and with the already-interrupted sleep, I ended up tossing and turning the rest of the night -- which only goes to show that sometimes you just can't win.
