The Apartment is different every time I watch it. Today, it was an ugly drama with laughs caught in the throat. Horrible people on every level trying to justify their selfishness. And it’s no less effective seen that way. I have seen it another time and laughed all the way through. It really is Wilder’s masterpiece because it works no matter your frame of mind.
