It was directed by W.S. Van Dyke, aka One-Take Woody. He directed a bunch of Nelson Eddy-Jeanette MacDonald movies, the Thin Man movies and more.

Sad story. Van Dyke was supposedly a Christian Scientist. He had both cancer and heart problems, but, rather than seek treatment, he committed suicide.
