Recital:  DONE.

It went well. She was prepared, confident, and presented herself beautifully.

The performing space (a very modern, very beautiful chapel) leaves plenty to be desired acoustically for these purposes, as it is all hard surfaces and expansive spaces. The piano was great, but hard to keep at a level it needed to be under a soft, un-miked singer. I think their music major program is fairly new, and they just don't have other performance venues except for the theeder where plays and musicals are done. But it was a fun experience and I'll probably do more there in the future.

Yesterday I had a wonderful arranging session with Joe Hearson, whom I hadn't seen in maybe ten years, when he and his father came to New York for a week of theatre. Joe's father was musical director for several groups in England, and we became friends via Castrecl. Shortly after their NYC trip, Joe's father asked me if I would help Joe with orchestrating a piece he had composed, and we had a good time with the piece through scans, PDFs, and emails.

Since then, Joe graduated from the University of Manchester, married French horn player Sophie, had his first child in January 2025, and formed the City of Stoke-on-Trent Symphony Orchestra, which he conducts. I'n very proud of him.

These sound like wonderful people, and what a nice experience the edumacational session must have been!

DR KevinH, your day on and off planes would drive me to a violent state. I'm very happy you survived it all.

Thanks, DR elmore.  I was glad to have a book to read.  I also kept telling myself that since I was still on Pacific Time, it would only be about 10 pm when I arrived in DC, not 1 am.

DR Rodzinski, I am so sorry to hear that Mrs. Rodz's experience was a bad one.

I have no idea what anesthetics I've ever been given. I just know that the few times I've had the "twilight sleep" kind, it's always been a perfectly good experience. Two colonoscopies to date (next one in 2026), a minor surgery to remove a cyst, something else I'm forgetting? Anyhoo, I know some people have completely different experiences, and I'm glad this one's over for her.

As for the prep, I've only had the gallon jug they give you, which I make and refrigerate which helps it go down a little nicer. My only complaint was that I can never quite finish the second half gallon! The medical facility always said that's okay, if you get most of it down and the, um, results are what you want, then you're fine. Again, though, some people can't deal with the stuff. I know there are supposed to be options these days, but I have no knowledge of them.

All in all, though, what a day you had!  Oy!

Thanks all. Mrs. R all better now. She always has bad experiences with blood draws, any of these sorts of procedures.

I need to schedule my own colonoscopy, and I’m leaning towards being fully awake during it.

Is there such a thing as opting to be awake, while being (ahem) "numbed" so you don't have to feel anything?

My piano teacher is such a taskmaster.

I don't think I could take the pressure, playing for that one.

I think we should all qualify for residuals for the work we've done in the last 50 years.

I think now there is a pill for colonoscopy prep.....but it is expensive.

I use the 12 spoons of Mirillax in one 28 oz. bottle of gatoraide - do that twice.

Waiting for an artisan pizza topped Meyer lemon, arugula, prosciutto and balsamic glaze. I hope it’s not too sweet.

At the first winery, the lavender was in full bloom. The poppies were opening up. And there were still plenty of wildflowers.

Some nice quotes from Daniel Faigin of California Highways - a blogger, really, but aren't most reviewers that these days. Also, he states that he doesn't consider himself a critic, but he sees lots of LA theater and has written about it for years - he's been a fan of my shows.

"The leads of the show are outstanding, most notably Sydney DeMaria as Alice Van Guilder. She was the greatest surprise of the show: A wonderful singer, strong in movement, and with outstanding comic chops ... (Reusch) had a very pleasant and strong singing voice, and captured the naivete of his character well. He also had strong comic timing ... The show was directed by Bruce Kimmel, who is an expert at this sort of thing. He has a lot of fun with these shows (I still remember The Brain from Planet X many many years ago at the Chance, his productions of L.A. Now and Then and Levi at LACC, and his recent 70 Girls 70 at GRT), and it comes through in the direction ... this production of Drat! The Cat! is quite fun, and it is a chance to see a rarely produced gem. If you get the chance, visit GRT to see Drat! The Cat! and learn what Broadway missed thanks to a newspaper strike. Someone should encourage Encores to see this: it could fit will with the shows they do. Further, I encourage GRT to keep doing shows like this: Revisiting shows that either failed or missed originally, or have been forgotten. Everyone seems to revive the same shows (why, oh why, is The Sound of Music on tour yet again). It’s nice to see something that we haven’t seen in ages."
