When I was a kid there were three sets of clothes:

play clothes: shorts and blouses or courderoys and sneakers
to be changed into directly after getting home from school

School clothes:dresses, skirts and blouses, short socks or knee highs, and leather shoes ( generally from Buster Brown)

Church clothes: fancy dresses, tights and patent leather Mary Jane’s

Thinking more on this, I recall my "discovery" of two stores - The Gap and Miller's Outpost - and how nice it was to buy all manner of casual clothing for not much money in those places.

I'm nearly positive that it was in one of those stores, in the '70s, that I decided it was time to let my hair down and begin wearing jeans now and then. I also remember getting corduroy there, which I think I also wore as a kid, but the jeans breakthrough was a significant one for me.

Yep. The Miller's Outpost on Westwood Blvd. Loved that one.

For my first five years or so, through kindergarten, I believe, I wore clothes my grandmother sewed on her old pedal Singer machine. I think it was when I changed schools for first grade that our school clothes at the end of August were always purchased at JC Penney. My memory - and we're talking 70 years ago! - is that we mostl;y wore jeans and button-down shirts through the school term and light knit slipover shirts and shorts. I remember alligator shirts. My brother Macbeth, two years younger than I, wore jeans during the summer to hide the braces on his legs between the ages of 4 and 9 because of physical therapy for cerebral palsy. Those mothers were heavy!

I've finished kitty cleanup, been to the basement, picked up the mail and a Chewy carton, straightened the door mat, opened the Chewy carton and put away the Meow Mix kibble, found the external hard drive and retrieved the missing desktop folder, and I'm getting the energy to make the bed. Jen should be coming by soon to make a bank run for me.
