Franz Waxman is great but he’s no Al Waxman from Cagney & Lacey.

Thanks DR Freddie for letting us know the Gypsy revival cast recording was released on Friday. I've been listening to it and it really sounds authentic to what I heard in the theater. If you want the songs individually the YouTube playlist is here:

Thanks, Jane!  But as far as I know, we only have access to the room (a 600-seat banquet hall) that one day.  I assume that we'll go in early in the morning, set up everything, do a test run and mic check, then give the one and only performance, strike everything and leave.

It was a restless night. I don't know how the cats put up with my flailing about.

Yesterday wasn't a bad day until around 3:30 in the afternoon when I was suddenly very sick. The messy trail ran from the computer table to the bathroom because I am simply incapable of moving any faster than a slow crawl. If I could move at the pace I pnce had, all would have been fine. I spent the next two hours getting out of my clothes and into a bath, followed by cleaning up the trail. The cats were completely grossed out: not once of them came to talk to me while I bathed.

We humans put up with a lot when someone is responsible for us being fed. Why should cats be different?  :)

More prayers for your home help from the Medicare people to start soon. That could alleviate at least some of the strain on you.

Maybe there's something your doctor can do to accelerate that process.

Here’s Shirley Jones. The tempo is way too slow.

I tried to listen to the new Gypsy album but it's just like every other cast album they do these days - completely DEAD sounding, no air, makes a big orchestra sound like ten, and the actors sound like they're doing a radio show. Cast albums should sound LIVE, you know, like the Goddard Lieberson original album. I just don't get it, frankly. And the changes to the score are HORRIBLE. The overture is mixed so poorly I couldn't believe it. As to the beloved Audra, she is not and has never been my cuppa. I don't care for her voice, it's that simple, and her acting has so much sauce it's like being hit over the head repeatedly with a shovel. I had to stop, finally. It's just awful.

The reviews are all over the place for Just in Time.

Here's my parody lyric.  I don't know if Jonathan Groff's sweating and spitting has been parodied in song anywhere yet, but it sounds like Mr. Groff has a sense of humor about it.  (Is the sweating and spitting the "Groff sauce" that gets referred to?)

On the reviews of the new Bobby Darin Broadway musical - praising Jonathan Groff's performance as sensational, and the critics AND the show pointedly warning that Mr. Groff spits and perspires a lot, so be aware if you're in the front rows.

Tune of "Mack the Knife" Bobby Darin rendition

Oh, the shark bites / are mis-named, dear,
So the experts / seem to say.
No, the sharks should / not be blamed, dear,
People just get / in their way.

Just like Groff who / seems to sweat, babe
Water sprays from / all his pores.
Sit too close and / you'll get wet, babe
It's not Groff's fault / no, it's yours.

Like sharks looking / for some food, hon.
All they want is / lots of fish.
Groff does not mean / to be rude, hon.
To delight you / is his wish.

Oh, the critics / have such smarts, dear,
And you count  on / what you read.
So you trust them / for fine arts, dear,
Hope they give you / what you need!

So you're on notice / when you go there,
Choosing how you / spend your cash.
Groff, he puts on / quite a show there.
His performance / makes a splash!

This was from Jesse Green's New York Times review:

"When Jonathan Groff says “I’m a wet man,” he means it.

The admission comes near the start of “Just in Time,” the Bobby Darin bio-musical that opened on Saturday at Circle in the Square. It’s a warning to the 22 audience members seated at cabaret tables in the middle of the action that they may want to don raincoats as he sings and dances, sweating and spitting, a-splishin’ and a-splashin’.

But Groff is wet in another sense too: He’s a rushing pipeline, a body and voice that seem to have evolved with the specific goal of transporting feelings from the inside to the outside. A rarity among male musical theater stars, he is thrilling not just sonically but also emotionally, all in one breath... "

It's weird that the strippers' song in the new GYPSY recording is titled Ya Gotta GET A GIMMICK.

OI remember it being YOU GOTTA HAVE A GIMMICK in the 1962 movie.  I looked it up and I am right HOWEVER on the OBC with Miss Ethel Merman is it indeed YOU GOTTA GET A GIMMICK....

Strange.
