I think that today's documentaries are fluff pieces compared to those down 40 years or so ago.

Documentaries are there to have you question, react and ponder. Today's so called documeatries are nothing more than entertainments.

Titicut Follies
a controversial film which is about  life inside a Massachusetts institution for mentally ill convicts. Really am inditent. The US government had the film band.

Hearts and Minds
the conflicting attitudes of the opponents of the Vietnam war. It caused a furror at the academy awards show that year, I remember that happening. Frank Sinatra dennounced it.

Thin Blue Line

That reexamined a murder case and freed the man who was wrongly convicted of the crime.
These are three that come to mind.

Good Morning!

-The site only seems slow - at least to me - when trying to access the discussion board, but once I'm in, then it seems to be working fine.

Hmm...

In any case...

I'm up.  I'm up.

...And I guess I did have a couple of margaritas last night.

Topic of the Day....

DITTO

;)

The Pennebaker Company Cast Recording Documentary
"Broadway: The Golden Age"
And then there's that whole series that started with "7 Up" - was it actually called that?  -Well, the one that followed a group of children every seven years starting at the age of seven.  It's the first documentaries that I remember being reviewed by Siskel & Ebert on their TV show.   -That and "Shoah".

Happy birthday JMK!  I'm up and feeling fine!  Although I must say I look as tired as I was feeling in the photo Jason posted of DR Ben and I!   What a fun time yesterday was!  Thanks to FJL and Skip for opening their home to us. It was lots of fun.  Well, I'm in the breakfast room and there aren't very many tables, so I think I'm going to sign off.

Well... Maybe I spoke too soon...

Ah, well...

Time for me to get ready to head down to Ripley-Grier.  I know some actor-friends who are planning to come in today, and I'm looking forward to seeing them.  And playing for them again.

I hope the "Survivors" from yesterday's walking and eating and walking... and walking... and eating tour are feeling fine this morning.  -Just start off slow.  Have some coffee.  Take low dose of aspirin, Tylenol, Advil or other analgesic of your choice.  Drink some water.  Stretch out your calves a little bit.  And have a wonderful day!

:)

*But I do have to say that it will be nice getting to sit for eight hours today instead of spending it on my feet.  ;)

TOD:
INSIDE DEEP THROAT - most definitely NOT a fluff piece.
THE CELLULOID CLOSET - not a fluff piece, either.
HOMO PROMO - how gay-related movies were sold, not really a documentary, per se, yet an intriguing look at times gone by.
THE MAKING OF COMPANY
BROADWAY: THE GOLDEN AGE
Almost anything by Ric Sebak

HEARTS OF DARKNESS

Does THIS IS CINERAMA count?

Semi-on-topic, I would like to mention some of the great programs TCM has produced and are available as bonus features on certain dvds.  I'm very fond of the Technicolor feature on ROBIN HOOD.

TOD:
I agree about so many of the documentaries that were mentioned.   In addition one of the favorites of the few that I actually saw in a movie theater was the one about the career (to that point) of Bruce Vilanch, called GET BRUCE.   Hilarious and very moving at times.

On a related note, I also enjoyed MAN OF THE YEAR, made by a Playgirl centerfold-turned-director about his experiences being a centerfold.  I saw it very early on, so I was totally fooled by this one, thinking it was a documentary that happened to have a lot of humor, but realized only about two-thirds of the way through that it was closer to a mockumentary.  Very entertaining.

Stretch out your calves a little bit.

Yesterday you near walked me to death; now, you want me to saddle up and round up the calves for some stretching exercises.

You're are a cruel man, Jose. Cruel, I say!

Good morning!

It was raining here when I woke, it's raining here now, and it's supposed to rain the rest of the day, Hurricane Tamy's greeting to us.

We haven't had any real rain in almost two months, so many people are really grateful for this. The rain prevented my walk this morning, so I'll jump on the treadmill at some point today.

DR TD mentioned one of my all-time favorites:

THE CELLULOID CLOSET

I also loved THE TIMES OF HARVEY MILK, COMMON THREADS: Stories of the Quilt, and WORD IS OUT. All of these documentaries are gay-themed, and having something of a personal interest in the subject matter, they really touched my heart.

I liked BROADWAY: THE GOLDEN AGE just fine (though on second viewing, there were A LOT of talking heads though what they had to say was indeed fascinating).

Some of you didn't like it, but I loved BROADWAY: THE AMERICAN MUSICAL.

When John McGlinn made that marvelous 3-CD SHOW BOAT, there was a documentary on its making that also included SHOW BOAT scholar Miles Kreugher giving the complete history of the show. I videotaped that program and have always loved it. (Not sure I could even put my hands on it now).

Movie documentaries:

THE MAKING OF GONE WITH THE WIND which is probably the most complete, fact-filled documentary ever done on one film.

SELZNICK AND HITCHCOCK

MAYER AND THALBERG

THE RUBY SLIPPERS OF OZ which details the whereabouts of all of the pairs of ruby slippers currently known to exist.

I've always wanted the Walla in luxury.

Great pics, DR derBRUCER.  Thanks for sharing and captioning!
Hmmmm.

I should point out that der B is IN many of the pics.

The captioning is his, however.

(PS: The corgis are named Dylan and Toby, and they are a wonderful pair!)

DR Jason - Sounds like a good day to call in?

;)

Oh! I WISH!! I had 75 emails waiting for me in my inbox and several faxes that needed to be processed, so it's a good thing I came in today. The office *may* close early tomorrow because of the upcoming holiday and we are closed (!) on Monday, so everything's as it should be, I guess.

If you're free on Monday, any interest in going to the Zoo or the Met Museum?

DR FJL, I also liked MAN OF THE YEAR very much, and added the DVD to my collection the second it was available. It was kind of a mock-documentary since there were actors playing roles in the film around the central true story Dirk Shafer had to tell.

And what was the documentary about the gay Orthodox Jews struggling to reconcile their faith with their sexuality - SHRINKING BEFORE GOD, or something like that. Very, very powerful.

It was called Trembling Before G-d, with the o left out since Orthodox Jews don't spell or use the name at all (is that correct JMK?).

Yes, it was quite a film.

Thank you, DR Ben. That's it, and it was very haunting. I thought about it for days after seeing it. I guess that means it was very successful since I think the best documentaries make you do that.
