I had a really full night of TV and video.
First up was the laserdisc of IT'S ALWAYS FAIR WEATHER. I haven't seen the film in awhile, and since it's not slated to come out on DVD until next year, I took the laserdisc from the Gene Kelly Collection off the shelf and watched.
The Eastman Color isn't the brightest, of course, but the print used is very good, and the stereo surround is magnificent. I had this HUGE grin on my face as the main titles played because the wonderful score is played so beautifully by the MGM orchestra in lush arrangements that just lift you up to a musical high.
After the movie concludes, two outtakes are presented: "Jack and the Space Giants," a tour de force by Michael Kidd that takes place in a kitchen as he cooks a wondrous meal while dancing acrobatically. An amazing achievement, and according to rumor, one that some internal jealousy caused to be cut from the film. A shame because the other two male stars each got a bravura production number and without this, Kidd comes off as a distinct third in the trio.
The other outtake is "Love Is Nothing But a Racket," a Kelly-Charisse comedy duet as the two covort through an array of costumes while singing and dancing. Silly fun but wisely cut from the film.
