I just saw this weird commercial for Overstock.com, I believe.  There women in winter coat's are singing to the tune of "Jingle Bells" about "Oh, Oh, oh, the big O."  My big O fantasies never involved Overstock.com.  Really.

...Actually, before heading over to Steve's, I made a stop at Ukrop's to pick up some groceries for him.  When I had called him earlier, he had made mention that his cupboards were bare, so... Some cold cuts, bread, cereal, milk, ice cream, cookies, etc...  -Just the essentials.  ;)  -I also got a tray of mini-tarts: (one of each) coconut custard, lemon chess, chocolate fudge and pecan.  -And once I got to Steve's his cupboards were not that bare, but at least now he has a couple of snacks.  ;)

He's doing well.  Yes, work is crazy - mainly because he's trying to clear his desk before taking off next week.  His mom's medical condition has "evened out" for now, so that's good too.  -And his sisters have been rotating "duty".

We ended up heading over to Bottom's Up Pizza - it's located in Shockoe Bottom - for dinner.  It's great pizza!  Steve had a slice of their "Loaded" variety, and I tried a slice of one of their new specialty pizzaz, "The State Fair".  The crust is spread with Gulden's Brown Mustard, then topped with Caramelized Onions, Roasted Red Peppers, Sausage and Mozzarella Cheese.  It was quite tasty, and the mustard "sauce" provided a nice counterpoint to the savory toppings.  As always, their sourdough pizza crust is basically good enough to be served on it's own.

So, now we're back at his place.  Emeril is on TV in the background.  I'm on my laptop, and Steve is working on his computer - more rehearsal CDs for the Choral Society.

And in a little bit, we'll dig into the Breyer's Vanilla and some of those mini-tarts...

Today is the post office's busiest day of the year. My DH is a postal worker. He has worked ten-hour days six days a week for most of this month. I expect he'll work twelve hours today.

I discovered that today when I went stopped at the post office on my way to a doctor’s appointment.  I immediately returned to my car and continued on to Barnes ‘Nobel.  The line there was even longer.  An hour later I returned to purchase a couple of gift cards and was thrilled to find there wasn’t a line.  Next I went to a different post office I was told is normally less crowed, and found only three people ahead of me.  As I turned to leave I was surprised to find a long line had formed.

...And I have a vague remembrance of that "Star Wars" Christmas Special.

...And I also still remember Carrie Fisher's appearance on "Saturday Night Live"... and that take off on the Beach Blanket Bingo movies... "I was just getting the spinach off her teeth."

Is this a slow news day here at haineshisway.com?  Skammen.

Well, there was a gas leak at the church and I had to wait for an hour and a half for the gas company representative to come up. That's news.

Hmm...

This just arrived in my e-mail box... along with a couple of other variations...  This is one of the few suitable for posting on a family site...  I hope.

;)

Santa Claus Is Wearing A Gown
(sung to Santa Claus Is Coming To Town)

You better come out,
you better not cry,
You better not pout,
I'm telling you why
Santa Claus is wearing a gown.

He's making the switch,
He's leaving his wife,
He's gonna come out, to start a new life
Santa Claus is wearing a gown.

A secret he's been keeping,
It's made him awful tense.
He knows it will be better now,
When he comes down off that fence.

So you better come out,
You better not cry, you better not pout,
I'm telling you why.
Santa Claus is wearing a gown.

Matthew- Madeline’s.  Just the thought makes me happy.  Thank you for the photo.

SWW I like the idea of a touch of molasses in your chocolate chip cookies.  LOL-I think those are about the easiest cookies in the world to make and with the new hand held beaters I only use my large mixer for breads and heavy duty recipes.

I will admit, when we lived in Michigan, to purchasing pre-molded cookies for baking.  There were exceptionally delicious and I could take one or two cookies out of the freezer instead of eating an entire batch.

GOOD VIBES NY DOESN’T HAVE A TRANSIT STIKE!  Jason really needs to get away from the tacky decorations and return home. :)

My niece also needs to get home from the hospital.  Last night she had an emergency appendectomy.  At least they could do it by laparoscopy.  She will be heading home for the holidays Wednesday, a day earlier than the red eye flight planned for Thursday night.  Her mother changed the reservations and ordered a wheel chair for her.  The biggest challenge will be getting up and down the four flights of stairs at her apartment, if she can get home from the hospital.  I hope the trip to the airport won't be too difficult.

I just ate a delicious piece of marzipan, all the way from Bruno’s bakery in NY.  Several of the pieces, the pumpkin shapes to be precise, are solid rocks and not eatable.  All the candies were to be fresh, either the pumpkins aren’t or they are from a bad batch.  To add insult to injury I paid by the pound.  The peaches, oranges and corn (they didn’t have my favorites, bananas) are as yummy as I remembered.

I’m pleased to say UPS was incorrect, their truck with our package was not sitting in Maryland but about to arrive in Portland, which it did.  In the wee hours of the morning it was delivered to the Medford office and then to us this afternoon.

Marzipan is not what I need to be eating after indulging in the fruitcake I happily opened when I returned home today.

And in other news...

When we got back from dinner, Steve found a box of old 45s sitting in front of his door.  Turns out they were left there by one of his condo mates who had given him some LPs a couple of weeks back.  Well...  Here's just a sampling of some of the titles...

Andy Gibb - I Just Want To Be Your Everything/In The End (RSO - Polydor)
Commodores - Brick House/Captain Quick Draw (Motown)
The Sylvers - Lovin' You Is Like Lovin' The Wind/High School Dance (Capitol)
Dave Dudley - If I Had One/Big Ole House (Mercury)
Bobby Vinton - Roses Are Red (My Love)/You And I (Epic)
The Playmates - The Day I Died/While The Record Goes Around (Roulette)
Aaron Neville - Tell It Like It Is/Why Worry (Par Lo)
Fraternity of Man - Don't Bogart Me/Wispy Paisley Skies (ABC) *I'm taking this one back with me to give to Matt Bogart. :)
Los Indios Tabajaras - Maria Elena/Jungle Dream (RCA Victor)
Tip Top Band - The Doctor and The Monks/Blue Danube Rock (Tip Top)

...And many more.  Quite the eclectic collection, huh?

I think Steve is going to use to them as home decor.  Some of them need to be cleaned up - some look a little moldy - but some still look playable.  -However, if there are any DRs who would be interested in a listing of the whole inventory...

DR Jane - You can "revitalize" marzipan by leaving them in a closed container with a piece of bread, a slice of apple, or something like a paper towel that has been wet-ted and then wrung out.  Or just nuke them in the microwave in ten second spurts to see if they'll soften.  Sometimes if marzipan has been exposed to cold temps - like can happen in shipping - it can get quite hard, but it still might be salvageable.

...And the Balducci's/Sutton Place Gourmet stores in the DC area have wonderful marzipan for sale this time of year.  All sorts of shapes and varieties.  In fact, there was a story on the Food Network the other night about their one and only marzipan creator/shaper/maker.

Alas, I can't seem to find any shipping info on their website.

The electrician came and gave us light in the kitchen.  I can’t express how nice it is to see again.  Maybe the light will enable to cabinet installer to progress at a faster rate when he returns tomorrow, if he returns.  Rain might keep him away.

Jose thanks for the marzipan tip.  I tossed mine and sent two as gifts (thinking they were pretty if not eatable) and will pass the info along.

I didn’t find marzipan at all.  Is it as good or better than Bruno’s?

Matthew, oh well.  I would have asked for the recipe for Bryan.
