Well, you've read the notes, the notes were not ME notes, and now it is time for you to post until the ME cows come home.
-
And the word of the day is: JUBILEE!
-
First post after BK.
-
Sorry, I got a phone call.
-
Third post after BK.
-
I am up at 3:43 AM in the morning why???
-
I am up at 3:43 AM in the morning why???
...and the answer is??
-
Hope you can get to sleep, and get enough sleep, Michael!
-
I’m going to interview one of the original producers of La Cage Aux Folles who has a lot business and personal stories to tell, someone who worked with Carr and lives nearby and one of the original Cagelles who now lives in Orlando. Their stories were not in the Allan Carr documentary or the deleted material you can see on YouTube. The producer and the actor are my new connections to these people who I didn’t have prior to my play reading.
-
I have the day off so I’m sure I’ll be able to nap.
-
Well, I need to get some sleep. Good night, Michael and anyone else out there in the dark.
Have a good day, all!

And now I'm going to sleep. 8)
-
3:16 a.m.! No sleep tonight either.
-
I was afraid that would happen when I fell asleep watching TV last night.
-
Oh well, I might as well try again.
-
Good morning, all.
-
I’m going to try to have a productive day. I hope everyone else has one.

Good morning, all!
-
I need work. I'm too idle and too lazy.
-
We're in for rain this morning. It's so warm and humid this morning that all I wanted to do was lie on my bed and let the fans cool me off. It was quite nice.
-
I will step out later to do some banking and have this CT scan of my sinuses. With my luck, the rain will begin the moment I walk out of the apartment.

THE BURBS:
My late publicity client, Gale Gordon, was in that one.

We just watched Tom Hanks in CAPTAIN PHILLIPS, which was a goodie.

Good morning, all.

THE BURBS:
My late publicity client, Gale Gordon, was in that one.
Gale Gordon! Always enjoyed him.
-
I never saw THE BURBS either. Sounds like a fun watch, with no higher expectations than that involved.
-
It’s funny — For me, Tom Hanks has always turned out to be well worth watching in just about anything, even when I haven’t thought I’d give a Wallenda (flying or otherwise) about a particular film going in. But he’s not one of those people for whom I have a “favorites” list in mind.
-
Patrol was quite short. Stella escaped and ran to the second floor landing where I caught her, while Annabelle rolled around the linoleum.
-
I think I will pull more books today.
-
So. Yesterday. A band reading, and sort of a run-through on stage of The Wizard of Oz.
Oy.
This one is strictly amateurville. In every respect. I like the venue, so that surprised me. And of course I’m getting paid. But the fun stops there. If anyone I know who has a pair of ears comes to this, I’ll be properly mortified. But like Pooh-Bah, I magnanimously humiliate myself for a paycheck. What are you gonna do?
One nice thing: It was tech Sunday, so there was all kinds of food there. And it was good! I ate, shamelessly, like a pig, and still wished I could fill my pockets with more to take home.
-
Patrol was quite short. Stella escaped and ran to the second floor landing where I caught her, while Annabelle rolled around the linoleum.
That does it. There needs to be some sped-up silent movie footage of these patrols. I believe DR Elmore and family could give Harold Lloyd a run for his money.
-
Bruce you did indeed miss the unexciting comments on Toy Story. I had posted them on page 2.
-
I finally had a half way decent night of sleep.

I stepped out at noon for the bank and Stella escaped again and again I caught her on the landing between two and three. I did my banking and caught a taxi to the radiologist. I was about 45 minutes early and they saw me immediately. The CT scan took all of five minutes and now I'm home at the time of my origfinal appointment.

I'm up, I'm up - seven hours of sleep. Kritzerland titles will be live at noon, but here's the blurb for them:
Kritzerland is proud to present two great new releases – one world premiere soundtrack and another in our ongoing Ben Bagley series of reissues:
DEMENTIA
Composed by George Antheil
Conducted by Ernest Gold
Featured Voice: Marni Nixon
and
ERNEST GOLD’S PIANO CONCERTO
Conducted by Leon Barzin
Marisa Regueles, piano
Has there ever been a film that could actually cause Dementia? Well, some would say that the film known as Dementia, a completely one-off, nightmarish journey into the netherworlds of Expressionism, noir, horror, and sexual psychosis, might just fit the bill. Filmed in 1953 but not released until December of 1955 due to censorship battles in New York (the censor board averring the film indecent, inhuman and would tend to corrupt morals and incite to crime). When it finally premiered in New York, the film was reviewed thusly by Variety: “May be the strangest release ever offered for theatrical release.” Dementia features no dialogue at all, just some sound effects here and there and occasional background laughing and chatter. It runs a terse 55-minutes. At some point, producer Jack H. Harris bought the film, made a few changes, and added portentous almost non-stop narration by the one and only Ed McMahon. He also retitled the film, Daughter of Horror, and that version was released in 1957.
One of the biggest contributing factors to the film’s uniqueness was the score by George Antheil, who, in addition to his classical music had written many notable scores for films, including The Buccaneer (1938), Specter of the Rose (1946), Knock on Any Door (1949), House by the River (1950), In a Lonely Place (1950), Sirocco (1951), The Sniper (1952), Not as a Stranger (1955), and post-Dementia, The Pride and the Passion (1957). Antheil’s score for Dementia is almost wall-to-wall music. It’s weird and wonderful, perfectly suiting all of the nightmarish goings on. In fact, one could not imagine a more perfect score for this film. Giving the music an especially eerie texture is the vocal oohs and aahs of Marni Nixon. She was about to become the go-to singer to dub major actresses in film musicals, most notably Deborah Kerr in The King and I (and also An Affair to Remember), Natalie Wood in West Side Story, and, of course, Audrey Hepburn in My Fair Lady. The score was conducted by Ernest Gold, at the time married to Marni Nixon, and a fine composer of both classical works and film music.
As a companion piece, we’re delighted to include Ernest Gold’s wonderful Piano Concerto, written in 1943. Although not critically well received at the time, the concerto is really terrific, filled with wonderful Gold tunes, some jazzy bits, and sounding every now and then like his film music.
Dementia is appearing for the first time on CD, mastered from a 7 1/2 ips tape. The Gold piano concerto is also mastered from an archival 7 1/2 ips tape.
DEMENTIA is limited to 500 copies only and priced at $19.98, plus shipping. This is a PRE-ORDER – CDs will ship by the third week of August, but never fear, we’ve actually been averaging three to five weeks early in terms of shipping ahead of the official ship date. To place an order, see the cover, or hear audio samples, just visit www.kritzerland.com. Also note that your PayPal receipt is the only receipt you get – we don’t send out confirmations beyond that.
Our second title is another in our ongoing reissues of the Ben Bagley Revisited albums:
JEROME KERN REVISITED VOLUME II
Music by Jerome Kern
Lyrics by Guy Bolton, Anne Caldwell, Dorothy Fields, Oscar Hammerstein, Otto Harbach, Gus Kahn, Herbert Reynolds, Harry B. Smith, P.G. Wodehouse
This is the second volume of Jerome Kern we’ve released and it’s another complete delight, with a great cast including Joanne Woodward, Kaye Ballard, Sandy Stewart, Jerry Stiller, Anne Meara, lyricist Sheldon Harnick, Sarah Rice, Arthur Siegel, and more. The musical arrangements and musical direction are by long-time Bagley regular, Dennis Deal. There are, as always, lots of great Ken rarities, a treasure trove of great tunes with great lyrics by some amazing lyricists, from shows such as Sitting Pretty, Oh! Boy!, Love O’Mike, High, Wide and Handsome, Nobody Home, The Canary, and others. That is the joy of these albums, not hearing the tried and true, but hearing the neglected and unknown. There are two bonus tracks from a revival of Show Boat, too, and as always, we’ve really spruced up the sound, and we of course give you the great Harvey Schmidt artwork.

Two? I only recognize the one for Joanne Woodward! When this album was first released on LP, it was Kern Revisited, Vol. 4, but some of those tracks are now on the first Jerome Kern Revisited, and there are a few I don't think Ben ever put on CD. Ben liked "the Bullfrog Patrol" orchestration that he added part of the instrumental track without the voices to the front of the track. You can hear the sudden slow down where the original track begins with the vocal. I've always wished he hadn't done that.
The recording also was the conducting debut of John McGlinn on the SHOW BOAT tracks.
-
McGlinn is credited as an arranger for one track, and you are for two.

CDs are live at Kritzerland.

CDs have been ordered!

And speaking of Kritzerland CDs, Rodgers And Hart Revisited Volume III (http://www.kritzerland.com/rod_hart_rev_v3.htm) and The Fantasticks in Jazz (http://www.kritzerland.com/fanjazz.htm) have just arrived! :D

Unchained Melodies will ship this week, too.

McGlinn is credited as an arranger for one track, and you are for two.
Hmmm . . . McGlinn didn't arrange, he just brought in the SHOW BOAT chorus and Karla Burns from the 1983 revival, as I remember. If he arranged anything, it would have been the medley from GENTLEMEN UNAFRAID with Ron Raines, but I'm not sure that's ever been on CD.
My memory of those sessions is that I scored "The Bullfrog Patrol" (I loved Joanne Woodward!) and a couple of things for Rod McKuen, who was a very kind man. I might have written the chart for "April Fooled Me, but it's too long ago now. Often Dennis Deal would call me and ask me to write a violin part for him.
-
I never had a cat harness.
That sounds like an enigmatic film title, like a cross between "I never sang for my father" and "The man who Loved Cat Dancing."

Monday afternoon greetings! We had a very busy day yesterday and Richard had an outpatient treatment at the pain center today. We’re both taking it easy now.
-
Yesterday, around 1:00 I sent a college director the current draft of my Annabelle & Thatch book for his comments. He had been a fan of the tales on Facebook, so I thought he might have some good feedback. Last night I got an email from him around 7:00 with a paragraph of comments. From them, I can only assume two things: he wasn't amused and he never bothered to read the opening chapter.
-
Yesterday was Fr. Richard’s quarterly scheduled visit to the Lima congregation, so I was up at 5:30 and we were on the road at 7:30. He did a nice service at the retirement home where Mr. L lives and then 8 of us went to brunch.
-
We stopped in Piqua (about halfway home) to visit my cousin’s wife, who’s there at her Mom’s for the week. The real attraction, though, was her 19-month-old daughter, Grace. It was our first time to meet Grace and before we left she let me pick her up.
-
We got back to town with just enough time to get to the funeral home visitation for a longtime friend of Richard’s. We prefer to attend the actual funeral service, but it was today at the same time as Richard’s procedure.

Condolences to Richard on the loss of his friend.
Thank you, DR Jane. David was really more of a long-ago friend, who lived next door (with his parents) to our first house. He and Richard had lost touch after we moved and his parents died. Our closest current connection to his family is his sister-in-law, who does all our picture framing. She and her husband (David’s brother) and David’s sister were surprised to see us and make the connection.

I spent much of the morning on the phone to Apple. I upgraded my MacBook to Mojave recently and at first all was well. But then strange things started occurring. Nothing that suggested a hardware issue, all software-related. I was thinking through my options--Apple store, Apple Care (recently expired), independent Apple repair store--when I happened to go to the Apple site to check if others were having trouble with Mojave. I somehow landed on a phone helpline that I didn't know existed. A young woman walked me through some things and explained others. She felt that some things were reset during the upgrade. It's too soon to say that all is well, but I certainly hope so. Mostly, I'm pleased to have another source of support. Twice I've gone back to the Apple site to get the phone number, but can't find it. Deliberately obscure? If any of our HHW Apple users know it, please let me know!
-
The Apple person and I were chatting a bit while things were loading. She asked if it was raining where I was. "Raining? No. Just earthquakes." She is based in DC and hadn't heard about our earthquakes, but it was pouring in DC. She's apparently never lived in California. We don't get a lot of rain.
-
The Apple specialist wasn't in last week when I was at Best Buy, but I have a number of questions for him, too.
-
I spoke to my friend in Hawaii today. We talked a bit about earthquakes. He said that last year when the volcano was erupting they had earthquakes EVERY day for months. Ugh! Horrible!
-
DR Jeanne I hope your MacBook problems are over.
-
Larry - were the comments negative or just humorless?
If what he wrote back was humorless, maybe there's something you can learn about how to present the material, maybe playful chapter titles?
-
Vibes to John G and his friends over their recent loss.

I knew this before, but it came up on my YouTube playlist today. Sounds like Harvey Fierstein had not had a great experience doing the 90-minute "Hairspray" in Vegas.
Harvey Fierstein on doing "Hairspray" in Vegas
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5D_vvsiJUxw
Great stuff on people wearing their two drinks around their necks - since you need more than one drink to get through 90 minutes.
He says at one point, something like: you go on your vacation and choose to stay at this huge themed hotel The Luxor, which is a huge tomb - where in the basement they present "Hairspray."
-
DR Jeanne I hope your MacBook problems are over.
Yes, thanks. Good support makes such a difference! I could buy a new MacBook, but the keyboard's different and I'm not sure I'd like it. Besides, I like my old one.

I can only go by the credits on the CD, which credit you with Day Dreaming and Bullfrog. McGlinn is credited with It Wasn't My Fault, and someone named Bill Tynes is credited with Worries. If this isn't correct let me know so I can fix the booklet.

I would swear I did not do "Day Dreaming," but I did do "Bullfrog Patrol."
Bill Tynes was the producer for the New Amsterdam Theatre Company at Town Hall between 1981 and 1985. I worked on every one of their productions except for I MARRIED AN ANGEL and MUSIC IN THE AIR because of the work on JUBILEE, which Bill wanted to produce on Broadway. He was the violinist on this Kern recording and the Bernstein Revisited. He died in Jan. 1987 from AIDS. "Worries" sounds just like something from his piano-violin act with Ethan Mordden in the early 1980s. I still miss Bill, one of my dearest friends.
I still doubt the McGlinn credit, but he was a real fanatic about the Kern scores from the 1910s and 1920s, so it's possible. I was only at the sessions for the things I did.

Mac Mail is totally screwed right now - nothing is working - this has been happening once a month and all one can do is wait it out and do everything from the phone, as that works fine. It is so annoying.
-
I had Taco Bell for lunch. Marshall Harvey came by and we had a long chat about The Creature Wasn't Nice. We're mushing ahead, but the director's cut is going to have several adjustments to it so that perhaps I can finally have it be pretty close to what I wanted it to be but wasn't allowed to finish. That will include additional music and sound effects, a few trims, the Dirty Harry trailer being put in (it was never in my cut but should have been), and we're adding a theremin to the main title, something I told the composer I wanted and which he completely ignored, even after I heard it and complained that it was not what I asked for. So, we'll see how that works. But this is definitely happening and will probably require a relatively small Indiegogo campaign, so stay tuned. I'm actually hoping it doesn't require that, but we shall see.
-
Listening to music. Don't think I'm in the mood to watch anything. Mac Mail has caused me to be in a fowl mood, so I had some chicken in a biskit crackers.

elmore, it's fascinating how cheaply done volume two was - perhaps the cheapest-sounding of all that I've heard, but I haven't delved further into Rodgers and Hart and Cole Porter yet, not to mention Vernon Duke. So many more to do.

Love me those Cole Porter recordings. I played those more than most of the other Bagley recordings, though I have fond spots for the Berlin and the Loesser as well.

Watching a movie I hadn't heard of called Rope of Sand. It reunites some of the Casablanca crowd (Paul Heinreid, Claude Rains, Peter Lorre) in another African setting. The star this time is Burt Lancaster. The score is an excellent piece from Franz Waxman. Atmospheric direction from William Dieterle. All the right boxes checked, except for the screenplay, some nonsense about diamonds, which is a bit of a letdown.
