Title: TIRED AND PERFUNCTORY, NOT NECESSARILY IN THAT ORDER
Post by: bk on October 17, 2019, 12:04:29 AM
Well, you've read the notes, the notes were both tired and perfunctory, and now it is time for you to post until the tired and perfunctory cows come home.

Today's going to be a day.  Tonight, a musical group called Che Apalache (https://www.washingtoncenter.org/event/19-10-17-che-apalache/).  I wanted to usher or work concessions for the show, but the volunteering was completely filled up. :-\

However, it turns out that the group is going to do a show for local students during the day, and they need ushers for that, so I'll be able to see the show!  I'll use a few hours of vacation time from work and will need to park in one of the (few) nine-hour street-parking areas.

When it's over and the ushering is done, I'll go back to work for the rest of my time.  Then, I'll go home.

I'm back to my overture, which I hoped would be finished by Sunday, but won't.  I thought today was a City Center day, but Joshie is tied up in a long meeting concerning next summer's season of shows.  It looks like I'll be there on Friday and Saturday.

Last night TCB asked, regarding hospitals:

Don’t they realize how much planning is required by the patient?

No, I really don't think they do. I've spent a lot of time in hospitals and nursing homes caring for family members and my opinion is not a favorable one.  I've met caring doctors and nurses, but the concern of the admin staff is tending to the needs of the institution. That's the job.

I also feel that many procedures are over-marketed. I've heard a lot of "back to work the next day!", which in many cases is quite unrealistic. This approach may sell more medical equipment, but I feel it does a disservice to the patient and family. My surgeon and his staff are quite good, but even they don't really prepare the patient adequately for what's to come.

Such sad news about the death of Elijah Cummings.  I really admired him.

I feel the same. I never met him in person, but he was listed as a reference for a young man who was applying for a job with us. This was many years ago, in my Washington days. I called, and he took the call. We had a very nice chat. He had a maturity beyond his years and was very gracious. I knew of no other cases of a congressperson giving a reference, and I interviewed hundreds of applicants. I think he really cared about people and I, too, admired him. I am saddened by his passing.

The food was quite mediocre - penne in a pink sauce (just a dash of cream, said they) - it was like pasta in soup.  And only about five ounces, so it really could not have been all that caloric.

George,

A friend of mine is trying desperately to get a can of this beer...even just an empty can.

Apparently the Matchless brewery is located in Tumwater.

Is there any chance you would be able to find one?

I can PayPal the money for the beer and shipping

Such sad news about the death of Elijah Cummings.  I really admired him.

I feel the same. I never met him in person, but he was listed as a reference for a young man who was applying for a job with us. This was many years ago, in my Washington days. I called, and he took the call. We had a very nice chat. He had a maturity beyond his years and was very gracious. I knew of no other cases of a congressperson giving a reference, and I interviewed hundreds of applicants. I think he really cared about people and I, too, admired him. I am saddened by his passing.

What a wonderful story.  Thank you for sharing. Makes me sadder at his death. We need more gracious people in this world.

Interview vibes for DR JOHN G.

Thank you. The job is down to Krista and me. Krista is essentially my work wife. She's also been doing the job for much of the past three years, except for her maternity leave. As my boss told me at the end of the interview, we're both different. Krista and I both can do the job and we both can do it well. She'll have an answer by the end of next week.

God, I love those Bogarde and Dearden films. And I haven’t watched any in several years, so it’s time.

I’m almost positive I have the DVD of THE MIND BENDERS, and will check when I’m back home next week.

I loved the Criterion Eclipse series of four Dearden films. Really enjoyable set.

Shipping alcohol might be problematic.  If you can find a can I suggest reading the best way to ship it.

Well, I just finished listening to the sixth symphony of a Finnish composer called Aulis Sallinen - I liked his music very much when I first heard it in the 1970s but I never got any of it on CD - so there was a cheap box of five CDs of his symphonies and concertos.  I've been enjoying each of the symphonies - they're quite unique, voice-wise and texture and color-wise, but very tonal without ever being old-fashioned.  But the sixth - it totally bowled me over and has become an instant favorite and one I'll be returning to a lot.  I love discoveries like that.

They do have a website (https://matchless.bevv.com/ (https://matchless.bevv.com/)), but they don't list the Kermit beer.  They're literally down the street from where I live and work, so tomorrow I can go there and see what they have.
