Title: PANIC AND HYSTERIA RULE THE DAY
Post by: bk on March 13, 2020, 12:04:53 AM
Well, you've read the notes, the notes had no panic or hysteria nor much of interest, and now it is time for you to post until the panic and hysteria-ridden cows come home.

I was just about post this last night:
A little earlier tonight, I got an e-mail from the director saying that the whole production was being postponed until next season. :o

Oh, no!  Why?

They haven't said yet, but I assume the coronavirus.

And on a happy note (B-natural), Pete Buttigieg is hosting Jimmy Kimmel Live!  He's seems quite comfortable and has actually had some funny moments. :)

Pete Buttigieg (hosting for Jimmy Kimmel) and Stephen Colbert did their shows without audiences.  Stephen said that they were recording his rehearsal and seemed to just be riffing a lot, trying to fill the episode.  Dr. Sanjay Gupta was Stephen's only guest.

DR JEANNE - sorry I forgot the Aldi report yesterday.

My sister and I were there at about noon thirty.  Not many carts outside - so I was worried, but it was not much more crowded than usual.

The Aldi specials start on Wednesday, so that day of the week is usually the push and shove day.....

There were plenty of paper towels and TP - but I didn't need either of those items.....in fact I only have TP for guests as I am not a user....now....for various reasons....

They did have some of the special LOBSTER MAC & CHEESE dinners that were on special at $5.99, so I bought one of those.  Check out was quick - only one person ahead of me.....and I was home by 1:30 p.m.

Sounds like a good trip.  Maybe the paper towels and to sales are slowing down.  Did you look for disinfectant wipes.  Those were all sold out last time I looked for them.

Because of the timing. I didn't get to pick the food up yesterday when I should have, and I need it for their lunch feeding. And that's earlier enough than the appointment that I'd never get away with putting them off till afterwards.

Just back from shopping.   I'm almost out of paper towels so I thought I'd try Costco (and also to see what was going on there).  Wow!  There were lines to get in the place, lines to get to the water area and of course to the long check-out lines.   They were completely out of paper towels and toilet paper.   I walked out with nothing.  Then I went to my local supermarket, Giant, and had no trouble getting paper towels and some gallon-size bottles of water, among other items.

Broadway (shows) have been shut down for a month.  I wonder how all this would be playing out if you take Facebook and Twitter out of the equation.

Bruce, I wish you would explain to me what the death of almost 5,000 people worldwide has to do with Facebook?

Quote from: bk

What has to do with Facebook is HYSTERIA.  PANIC.  People going nuts.  There were MANY more than 5,000 deaths with the swine flu - like 70,000 more, worldwide - I don't recall even knowing about it let alone any panic and hysteria and crazy town that is happening strictly because of social media.  That is what it has to do with Facebook.

Bruce I expected this response from you and understand your view, however, I think it goes way beyond fb & twitter.  The news is about the virus is everywhere.  I think most of the hysteria, or just normal fear, is because of the secrecy and poor handling of this from our government.  People see the news in Italy and don't want that here.

Nonsense.  It took about 5 minutes after I signed in before one of the ladies called me to register, about 15 minutes to fill out the forms and give them my insurance info, 10 minutes or so for the X-rays.  When I was there last July or August, the place was so crowded that I waited over an hour after being processed.

Wow, 15 minutes for forms.  I walked up and registered, all withing 5 minutes.  I guess because I did it at the local hospital that has all of my information.  Then I waited 20 minutes after my appointment time to be taken back to the x-ray.

An hour wait to process.  I guess I shouldn't have complained about my "long" wait.

Since Emergency Leave is determined by the Admin, there's no limit.  THEY have decide that all libraries will be closed for two or three weeks (I've seen conflicting announcements), so when we fill in our time sheets, we select "Emergency Leave" and we'll get paid at our regular rate.

As for me being essential or not, I'll actually have to come in for at least a day and pay invoices that are here now but not yet paid in our system.  I will also have to compile the monthly budget reports and spreadsheet, and I'll have to do all of that here.  I don't have access to our ILS (integrated library system) from home.

Thank goodness we have governors (both red AND blue), university presidents, athletic conference and arts administrators, and public library directors who have the guts to do what the Federal government did not.  And I pray that Anthony Fauci doesn't fall off the tight rope he's having to walk and can keep his job.  He seems to be the only grown-up in the room.

Costco delivery had usually in normal times been pretty good, and in the past could deliver same day.

But this week, for the first time, it took two days for delivery, which is really the same as Boxed, and never informed us of things they didn't have, just showed without them.  (Boxed tells you when they're out of something so you can try to get it elsewhere.)

It's just that Costco not letting you know they don't have something until they just show up without the items feels TOO no-frills, somehow seems like Costco delivery is great in good times, but may not be set up for being super-busy.

This is fine when you can go to the market and just wait in line, though that means being in spitting distance, or at least article sharing distance, of a lot of people.

I think it was Morey Amsterdam who one the phrase "saliva of the fittest."

Morey Amsterdam played Buddy as part of Buddy and Sally, on the show which Immaintain James Goldman must have been watching when he named Buddy and Sally for "Follies."  (Sally is a common enough name, but Buddy, not to mention a Buddy paired with a Sally.)

Yes, I will need to come in for probably just one day, but not until the week after next.  As for our time sheets, everyone will use Emergency Leave for the time that the buildings are closed, but for the hours that essential personnel actually come in to work during that time, we will get additional pay time.  It'll be at our regular rate, but in addition to the Emergency Leave.

After therapy it was just raining lightly so I drove over to Ralph's. The parking lot was PACKED!  And partly flooded as well. Business at this store is usually quite light during the week and I can run in, get what I need, and get out quickly. Not so today. The paper products aisle was 90% empty. I was able to grab three rolls of el cheapo paper towels at 77 cents/roll and some sponges, but NO disinfectant wipes, and no rubbing alcohol. It does not instill confidence!

I then went to the mom-and-pop Mexican restaurant. I was one of two customers. That's not too unusual on a rainy day. I asked the owners if they were able to get supplies. "Supplies? Yes. Just no customers." This will really hurt many small businesses. I hope they are not one of them.

Is the hoarding worse this week than last? I went to Ralph's last week and saw only a 10% disruption of inventory. They had had a lot of buying, but were able to restock. It may be getting more difficult now to obtain merchandise. I hope not!

Watching Judy. The script is lousy, but the performances are interesting. The Jessie Buckley from Wild Rose is nothing like the prim character she plays here. Rufus Sewell is unrecognizable as Sid Luft. I'm not entirely sold on Renee Z.

Watching "Before Sunset." I can't remember if I ever saw this one. I know I saw the first and the third.

Ethan Hawke seems to be doing his best Woody Allen impersonation in this movie. It's not as charming as the other two, but I love the talk.

I finished a fun book today called Trust Exercise, by Susan Choi. The first half is about the students in a high school drama program, who learn some life lessons a little earlier than others might. Some of the details are hilarious, but the book is actually fairly involving on a dramatic level.

Apparently there is a fake story circulating that the National Guard is on their way to quarantine the PNW.  People are relieved to know it is false.  I vaguely recall seeing the fake story and completely ignoring it.

This fake crap has to stop - people have to be held accountable.  They have the ability to trace this stuff and it should be a crime to do this during a time like this.

For fun, at nine-fifteen I drove to the nearby Gelson's.  Empty parking lot, save for the employee loading his trunk with toilet paper and water, like THAT's gonna save him from anything.  So, I decided to park and see what it looked like inside.  But I couldn't because Gelson's is now closing at nine rather than eleven.  I hate to tell them, but there might, there just might be something on a shelf that no one wants that someone actually needs.  Good going, Gelson's.  Not sure when this insane insanity will end but it cannot be soon enough.

It should be a crime.

Then, for fun I drove over to the nearby Rite-Aid.  Empty.  The toilet paper and towels were gone, of course, and perhaps the waters were, too, but I didn't look for that stuff.  They had frozen stuff and plenty of it, lots of ice cream, and mountains of candy and chips.  I bought some pretzels, peanuts, cashews, and stuff like that, just to have a few snacks around so I don't have to endure the markets.  And as of tomorrow, I'm going to eat a few meals in restaurants again - I hear tell they're pretty empty.

The advice to have a 2 week supply in case of being quarantined is reasonable. The fact that people are buying months of supplies is crazy.

Oddly there is, unless this new round of buying cleaned it out, plenty of soap on the shelves.

I am glad you are going to support the restaurants even though we stayed home tonight.

After I left work, I went to Costco.

There was no toilet paper to be found anywhere!

A co-worker went yesterday and was told that it all goes first thing in the morning, and even that's with a 2-pack limit!

After Costco, I went to McDonald's to try their new (but temporary) double Big Mac.

It was just a Big Mac with four patties...not bad, but the patties on the one I got were a little dry.

It wasn't terrible, but it would probably be better to get one during lunch or earlier in the evening when there's more turnover and everything's more freshly cooked.

At least there is now a limit.  I realize businesses shop in bulk at Costco and often need larger amounts of supplies, still those packs contain a lot of rolls of tp.

There are also a couple of Smart Foodservice stores (formerly known as Cash & Carry) in the area and I would think that since they're a restaurant supply store, they would also have toilet paper and paper towels.
