Title: A THOUSAND CLOWNS
Post by: bk on June 09, 2020, 12:40:21 AM
Well, you've read the notes, the notes spoke of one thousand clowns, and now it is time for you to post until the one thousand clown cows come home.

Topic of the Day:  I'll have to think about Jason Robards, Jr. and Martin Balsam, but for William Daniels it's 1776 all the way! :D

BK, I loved the notes today.  "A Thousand Clowns" is a play I have never read, although I woulkd swear I had a copy of it in a Theatre Arts magazine at the time.  I don't know now how I missed the film, although I suspect it was release date of Sept 1966, the beginning of my junior year and the month I discovered the theatre dept. and missed a lot of movies from then until graduation.

I have a couple of home projects to take care of and then I plan to watch the Kritzerland show from Sunday.  Afyter the past week of pain and discomfort, yesterday was the first day I began to hope that things were physically returning to status quo in my body.  Except for a big portion of time somewhere between 3:30 and 5:00 this morning I slept rather well, something I cannot say for thew weekend.

Last night I started watching the Francesca Annis-James Warwick series Partners In Crime, and within 30-40 minutes I was completely unconscious.  I will have to begin it again tonight.

T.O.D.

I was a fan of Jason Robards ever since I saw him in THE JOURNEY (1959) with Deborah Kerr and Yul Brynner.

Saw him on stage in HUGHIE at the Huntington Hartford.

In fact, back in the late 1960s, I directed a production of A THOUSAND CLOWNS at a community theater in Torrance, CA.  Love that play.

Forgive the plug, but my play, JASON ROBARDS AT THE OLD PLACE, is available in paperback and Kindle editions via Amazon.  AND, it is currently on sale ($5.05, as opposed to $8.49).  How long the sale will last, I don't know.

An audio version was completed about a week ago, but, because of the pandemic, Amazon is now taking a month or two before their audios go on sale.  Still waiting on MISS AUDREY HEPBURN, which was completed in April.

I've accomplished kitty cleanup.  Every day, since my return, I've had the fear I will get to the floor and not be able to rise again.  The physical therapist yesterday suggested I use my cane around the apartment, but I'm still resisting the idea.

I have never been able to get into the film version of A THOUSAND CLOWNS - probably because of the things that MR BK wrote about in the notes, although I would never have known about those problems...consciously.....

My main problem, I guess, is that I have an aversion to William Daniels.....which is not quite as bad as a revulsion, although it could be that as well.....

I will say that my favorite thing about him is that because of his ego, the headline of his obit will read:

Voice of KITT Dies

instead of:

Tony Winner Dies

Thank you DR ELMORE.

My test results are fine except that my glucose is high.  I attribute that to the fact that the girl in the office called me to make my appointment out of the blue last week - and I went about 20 minutes later to get my blood work done.

And I had been eating ice cream and cookies all morning.

DR JRand69, I don't know a thing about William Daniels' ego, but I thought his performance in the original Broadway cast of 1776 was one of the greatest i've ever seen, and he was nothing but friendly and charming when I met him around 2003-2004.  I liked him in St. Elsewhere, too, and I enjoyed his biography.

I will defer to DR ELMORE.

I just thought he was short sighted to turn down his Tony Award Nomination because it placed him in the Supporting Actor category for 1776 - on a technicality.....

Tony Winner - is hardly ever followed by the category you won it for....I think Tom Bosley won in the featured category for his Title Role performance in FIORELLO!

One of my favorite series of books ever. I LOVE those collections, and when it comes to published books, i LOVE double-column for plays.

These, like plays in the Modern Library series (both regular and "Giant") affected me at a tender age......um.....yes, half a century ago.

So, my Gassner Fifth is out and ready.

Sadly (well, maybe), I never bought any of these new. I didn't start wanting to have them till I began going to the library sales and secondhand book shops, then I'd grab whatever they had.

This is one of the few college textbooks I didn't sell back at the end of the semester.  I also have the volume that covers "Early American Theatre," which was used in a graduate theatre history course I took here at Miami University in 1974.  Haven't read as many of those plays as in the one that contains "A Thousand Clowns."

He was pissed, and I would be, too.  He drove that musical, and he was the leading role. Don't forget that Rita Moreno accepted the supporting actress nomination for The Ritz, and when she won, she said something like, "In this show the only thing I support are my earrings."  Her comic lead was to The Ritz what Daniels was to 1776, and I am so grateful I caught both performances live.  I'm equally glad both were preserved to film.

Back from picking up no packages and no mail, and then dining in at Jerry's Deli for the first time in over three months.  I had several things I was thinking about ordering, but friend and server Ritchie beat me to the punch and said, "Chili, cheese, and onion hot dog?"  I hadn't even thought of that but it was the perfect suggestion and that's what I had and it was GREAT.  Only three booths in the entire restaurant were in use, but interestingly they were all in the same section - plenty of room between them, though.

The Ghosts of Versailles is the Met’s broadcast Thursday.

I love this opera! Figaro's first aria is amazing.

Oh wait, I do have it on DVD. It’s in the Levine set. That’s good to know.

I don't think it was ever made available for commercial sale outside of that set.  About ten years ago, Manhattan School of Music did a beautiful production.  I dob't think the libretto works a solidly as it should, but it's a beautiful work.

It's that production. Teresa Stratas, Renee Fleming and Marilyn Horne. I saw it when it aired live. I remember a few of the moments. I hope I have time to watch it again.

Be back later.

Tonight's AGT episode had the singer who was incarcerated for 37 years and finally released just last year because of DNA evidence!  He was pretty good and was easily put through to the next round.
