Title: FRUSTRATION AND FIREWORKS
Post by: bk on June 14, 2020, 12:19:10 AM
Well, you've read the notes, the notes were frustrating and had fireworks, and now it is time for you to post until the frustrated cows come home.

Today, the whole family is getting together at my parents' house to celebrate my mom's birthday, which is on Tuesday.  We'll have the leftover taco stuff, which is fine by me.  It was all quite good!

Yesterday, my sister and her daughter didn't come over, but my mom's friend Mona and her neighbor Dee were there.  Evidently, they and my dad have been playing Phase 10 quite regularly for quite a while now.  I've only been going over for the last several weeks because I wasn't working, but because I am now, I'll leave early on next Friday to join them again.  Fortunately, I have more vacation time than I normally should, and there's not a lot of work, so I can take the time off and not have to worry about making it up. :)

And now, I need to get some sleep.  Before I go to my parents' today, I need to go some place to get some eye hooks to hang up a string of decorative light bulbs that are a birthday gift for my mom.

Guess I'll go get some sleep.  Three hours ago I began working my way through a humungous eighty-six CD set (in original jackets) of Charles Munch, one of my favorite conductors.  Daunting, but what music.  As always, I'm most impressed with the early mono albums - such wonderful performances, and as with a few other great conductors, he makes me at least appreciate music that I normally don't.  Here in mono is an especially good Beethoven seventh.  That has one movement that I actually love.  And there was a Mozart piano concerto that was fun.  So, for me the pieces I know and love are great, but this is a learning experience as there's a ton of music in this set I've never heard.  Now playing, a magnificent Brahms fourth - in brilliant mono sound.

It sounds like everyone had a nice day yesterday.

Weatherwise we are expected to have another beautiful day.

I enjoyed reading about DR VIXMOM's activities and DR JOHN and DR GEORGE's days.....

And everyone including DR TCB who thought about going to B/R.

I have a list of donors to our 2020 season at Putnam County Playhouse - a list that is usually published in our programs.

Mr. President wanted the list on the website.  He had sent it to me as a WORD file.....I converted the pages to Jpegs.....and added them to a story on the website.

Then I used the Jpegs to create a slideshow to put on the Box Office Page of the website - so that it will still be there when the story falls off the front page....

And if that SOUNDS boring - you can imagine what it was like doing it!

Just so you know:

With the emotional moon in insistent Aries sextiling love-focused Venus retrograde today, it’s the perfect time to look within to find the answers you’ve been searching for. Although it might be tempting to blame others for what you’re currently going through in your love life, this inward energy asks you to examine your own feelings before looking anywhere else.

Remember that when dealing with retrograde planets, the changes always start from within. You’re being asked to reveal some truths about yourself today, and the results can be extremely rewarding. Deepening an existing relationship or finding true love are possible when you’re willing to open up and be honest with yourself.

I feel silly saying this, but our overnight lows are such that I turned the furnace on for about 30 minutes this morning to take the chill out of the house. An indoor temperature of 60 degrees on the Fahrenheit scale is just a bit too low for the likes of moi. It's only going up to 71 or thereabouts today, and will begin to get warmer again tomorrow.

Hell, I'm still driving on my snow tires!

Since I would ordinarily have had them removed in March right when everything stopped, these additional miles on them count for practically nothing. I'll probably go in to have them changed when it's time to fill the tank. That seems appropriate. :)

I spent the afternoon listening to Kurt Weill Revisited 2 and LA Now and Then.  I don't think I'd heard the Weill since I first bought it on vinyl, and I'd forgotten how wonderful it is.  So much of Ben's later recordings were total hits or misses with his concerns for studio time, refusal to repair things, and general sloppiness that I'm happy the Weill isn't one of those.

As for LA Now and Then, it's so wonderful!  I think I enjoyed it more listening to it than watching it.  I could focus on Lanny's wonderful charts and the fantastic band, just listen to the lyrics and enjoy the vocals.  What a wonderful CD!

I also wrote about 24 bars of orchestration, aided and abetted by three cats who showed up at various times to criticize and offer advice.  Thatch came first, and after he left, Annabelle declared it her territory as she rolled around the paper, played with paper clips, and forced me to write around her.  Then Stella showed up to lounge on my calculator and groom herself.  I tossed her off the table and Thatch came back, followed shortly by Annabelle who decided to groom Thatch while I wrote.  He left, Annabelle stayed for a bit, and then I picked her up and set her on the floor.  Stella returned, LA Now and Then had just ended, and it was time to feed them.  So they've had dinner and I'm at the computer.

Are you thinking about studded tires? Those aren't even allowed here, to my knowledge.

What impressed me most about the movie was its exuberance. Lee displays the same thrill of moviemaking here that he did in his earlier pictures. He was having a blast, whether it was his Treasure of Sierra Madre nods or his tributes to Apocalypse Now. One thing I'd never seen before was the way he filmed the flashbacks. Instead of getting the actors to look younger, he filmed them simply the age that they were, so you knew they were looking back. Everyone else looked young.

What a great picture!

I wish I had one of her at all, let alone one with me in it. It was a couple of decades earlier that she sang with us, and I'm not sure I even saw her in person anywhere after that.

What a great photo DR ELMORE.

I have seen a copy of the first interview that has been completed.  I need to wear my collar OUTSIDE my jacket and pull it down off my hips.....I am as big as a house and my face is sunburned and I squint like the sun is in my eyes.

BUT - the interview is good and lots of stuff was said that I think will be interesting....I didn't realize that the show was titled "Conversations With Jack" but I can live with that.....

It should be up on Tuesday and I shall post a link in case anyone is morbidly curious.....

Just saw a story on gas prices rising. I paid $1.59 at Costco today, and that was 20 cents a gallon cheaper than anybody else around.

We watched BRAKE (2012) starring Stephen Dorff on cable today.

For the the most part, it is an excellent thriller with a twist ending.

Unfortunately, it also has a 2nd twist ending that is totally unbelievable.

The writer and producer should have quit when they were ahead

Watched Johnny Guitar, starting again from the beginning, and loved it.

I had only ever seen it on inferior home video copies and, as far as I can recall, never in a theater. As always, the quality of the transfer makes or breaks it. Great flick.

Back to Munch doing Ravel at the moment - still in the mono years.  I've been enjoying the Schumann and the Schubert as a listening experience but I don't think I'll be returning to those pieces, as well as they are done by Mr. Munch.

Back from a nice walk. The mosquitoes stayed away from me.

One nice thing about our cooler weather is not having much exposed skin for them to bite.

I love the George Szell/Leon Fleischer stereo Brahms second piano concerto, but this Munch mono version with Arthur Rubinstein is spectacularly beautiful.

Also, today is the 22nd anniversary of the day that I bought my car!  I need to get it serviced (fairly soon), but it still runs pretty well! :D

22 years.  Congratulations.

Thanks, Jane!

WOW!!

Mine just passed its 18th birthday!

And given that it's still on that tank of gas purchased on March 19th, it's been enjoying a nice break.

Happy (belated) 18th birthday to your car, ChasSmith!

I just received a nice surprise.  A friend sent me a photo from the early 1990s with me, Roberta Peters, and some NYC Gay Men's Chorus drag queen - Miss Coco, maybe? - after a rehearsal for a holiday concert featuring Miss Peters, who was not just a great artist, but a really beautiful lady.

That's a great picture, Larry!

Hell, I'm still driving on my snow tires!

Since I would ordinarily have had them removed in March right when everything stopped, these additional miles on them count for practically nothing. I'll probably go in to have them changed when it's time to fill the tank. That seems appropriate. :)

Can't you get a ticket for driving on those after the season has ended?  I hope the rules have been relaxed.

I never heard of such a thing. Besides, who could tell they're snow tires without getting down and looking at the tread?

Are you thinking about studded tires? Those aren't even allowed here, to my knowledge.

Oh...I was thinking studded tires, also.  Those are allowed here in Washington state, but only from November 1 to March 31.  I've never had any.

Post by: George on June 14, 2020, 11:15:07 PM
Because of everything that's going on, the studded tire removal deadline here in Washington was extended to May 15, 2020.  It's now past that date, so they're illegal again.

Sounds like fun!  Can't wait to see it. ;D

The new Company company performs a Zoom version of the title song. I like it, but I just don't get the appeal of Katrina Lenk.

I actually liked her more in the little bit that she does here than when she sang in the New Year's Eve Sondheim concert. ::)
