Well, you've read the notes, the notes once again had The Browning Version but a different Browning Version from the previous Browning Version, and now it is time for you to post until the brown cows come home.
-
And the word of the day is: SLUGABED!
-
Good morning, all!
-
DR TCB, where are you? How are you?
-
I slept fine until 3:30, when Stella decided to pester me for breakfast. That cat lives on borrowed time.
-
I had really weird dreams last night. In the first I was in France with my Ohio friends, the Bartons who happen to be French. Cooking was involved and swimming in a river. Then I dreamed that I was on a ship in one of the Great Lakes, Huron, maybe?, with my parents and my mother's entire family, all of my dead uncles and aunts and cousins living and dead. My brother Macbeth was in the dream, but my brother Randy was not.
-
Then, my last dream was something about a music rehearsal. All the women playing in the band went to lunch together and took Rob Berman's cell phone. Then, when they returned, the men went to lunch. We were walking to the restaurant and watching the video the ladies made while they were in the same restaurant.
-
I haven't remembered a dream in ages so I'm surprised I remember three from last night.
-
Today I have no plans at all, but we're heading for tropical storm Fay(?) this afternoon, so I am happy staying inside.
-
BK, I think it's great the LA Times mentioned your show.
-
DR George, that's a neat gift!
-
Yesterday this happened in front of Trump Tower on Fifth Avenue.
-
Good morning, all.
-
I had a ridiculous night of sleep, no sleep, little sleep, no sleep, and more little sleep.
Woke up at 2:11 in the a.m. feeling wide awake and it was downhill from there. So I managed to sleep in just a tiny bit this morning, but I do believe there's a nice nap waiting for me sometime later.
-
And again, I "sort of" have a feeling about what the main dream was, but it hasn't come into focus. Still wish I could remember the one from the night before.
-

Beautiful. I remember them talking about doing this back when the others were going down, and I so wished it would happen. Very glad it has.

Ditto.

I've got to go down and see what Prokofiev records I still have. I'm thinking those Browning/Leinsdorfs might have been originally issued as part of the RCA "Leinsdorf" series with the special covers. I believe most were in the Dynagroove era, so the sound is automatically compromised to some extent. (As I understand it, the LPs were mastered to sound "impressive" on cruddy systems? Correct me if I'm wrong.) Although what I've never been clear on is whether the Dynagroove treatment was only at the LP mastering stage, and that therefore the master tapes might possibly be just as worthy as the Living Stereo ones.
Anyway, those are some great Leinsdorf performances. I don't thin the Mahler Sixth was in that series, but there's another one or two of the symphonies that are. I need to reacquaint myself with these. There's some fine listening to be had.
-
SLUGABED was one of my favorite characters in A CLOCKWORK ORANGE......
-
I hated DynaGroove......I didn't know why at the time - but it was tres lousy.....as they say in France.....
-
I am going to look for the Browning set to see what I can find......I have a couple of extra $$ in my pocket this month, and I might as well get some music.....
I am listening to one of the CD's I got at the Goodwill. It is an English import with 3 discs, called Music You Heard In The Movies.....and it has some good stuff on it....including "The Jet Song" and the Overture from "South Pacific" - OST recordings....eclectic, but entertaining..... It only cost me a dollar.
-
Yes DR GEORGE we need to see the framed poster.
-
I am also wearing my new t-shirt. I was struck by it - sort of an art moderne design with a slash of red and some black dots.....
I put it on today and looking in the mirror I realized that it is a snowman shirt....the red is a scarf and the black dots are coal buttons.....so much for Miro.

For what it's worth, the Barnes & Noble 50%-off sale on Criterions begins today. That's always been something I liked going into the store for, because your B&N membership card would get you another 10% off. Unfortunately, I hear tell they've all but decimated the value of having that card, partly by no longer allowing the discount on pre-existing discounts of over 20% or 30% or something. And if that's the case, I won't be renewing my membership. They've diluted their "brand" to the point that their only distinction as what used to be a fine bookstore is that they still carry SOME books.

I was once thought of naming a cat DynaGroove. Then I thought better of it.

Thank you. Can you still get free home delivery with the membership?
-
I would think so, but be sure to check first. At this point, Criterion's own flash sales are probably my own very best bet, since in my state I still don't get charged sales tax and I always buy enough to get free shipping.
-
There are four or five new Criterion titles I want. Bamboozled is one of them. The Irene Dunne-Paul Robeson Showboat is another.
-
I could be wrong about the Mahler Sixth not being part of the "Leinsdorf series", which might not even have been an official name. It doesn't look like the others, but it bears the "Aristocrat of Orchestras" title which might be the main thing.
-
Two!
-
Lang Lang is releasing two recordings of the Goldberg Variations. One was performed live at the church where Bach is buried, the other in the studio.
-
It’s supposed to hit 105 this weekend, both days.
And no, it’s not a dry heat.
-
DR ELMORE your dream about your relatives in France and subsequently on Lake Huron indicates that you have questions about your childhood that are like missing puzzle pieces - and those who would know how they fit only speak in a foreign language. The answers you seek are closer than you realize.
The dream about your colleagues demonstrates a curiosity that is never fulfilled about how some of them accomplish anything of any worth although results speak for themselves. And remember because it is easy for you does NOT mean that it is simple for others.

I could not find a Browning box set that I wanted to pay for....but there are several Van Cliburn Cd's that I am looking at.....although I still play the LPs, I guess it's time to come into the 21st Century.....
-

I'm still waiting for that damned Ohio property to sell! Then your Paypal account will explode,
-
I'm up, I'm up - have been up since seven-thirty - four hours of sleep.
-
Have been doing Kritzerland show stuff, had a telephonic conversation about same with the musical director and am continuing through the last of the Browning set, which is wonderful.
-
LOL DR ELMORE.....
-
Just so you know:
When Chiron goes retrograde tomorrow, it gives you a chance to examine your identity and let go of those feelings that something is wrong with you. This self-healing opportunity reminds you to deal with the pain rather than ignore it, because it won’t just go away. This energy tells you that you’re stronger than you’ve been giving yourself credit for, and that you do have the ability to lighten your burden.
-
Good afternoon!
-
I enjoyed your song last night, BK!
-
Congrats on the LA Times mention, BK!

DR Jrand69, you're always in season!
-
Great shirt, DR Jrand69. I'd probably prefer long sleeves on that if I had my druthers, but I really like it.
-
Helper has come and gone, food will be picked up at one.
-
Finished the Paul Hirsch book and am now listening to Mr. Toscanini have his way with the Beethoven symphonies. He was a wonderful conductor who could be quite a nasty piece of work to his bands. But the performances are wonderful and I must say I like hearing these symphonies in monophonic sound.
-
I am also wearing my new t-shirt. I was struck by it - sort of an art moderne design with a slash of red and some black dots.....

DR Jrand you should share the photo here. It is a good photo, as well as funny.
Oops, I should have waited. I see you posted the nice photo.
-
DR George I look forward to the photo once your gift is ready. It should be very nice.

A shame. I still prefer purchasing my eBooks from Barnes & Noble Nook vs Amazon Kindle. I have noticed lately my options have been greater on Amazon. Mostly due to the same few authors, still I worry about B & N going out of business.

If you have problems with face masks fitting this video might help.
https://www.yahoo.com/lifestyle/dentist-60-second-hack-face-140310428.html

I followed the directions and it works much better for me. First of all the mask no longer painfully stabs me under my eyes. Second, DR Laura the loop fits around my wrist without falling off.

I went to the Westport store to grab a few goodies, and was happy to find that they ARE allowing the member discount as before. That's just in-store, not online -- I think they make up for that with free shipping (?). So all is well on that front.
-

I haven't checked in the past week, but I don't know if the Barnes & Noble on the corner of Broadway is open or not.
-
Have you seen this absurd plastic shield that people are wearing OVER the mask??? Someone posted a photo saying how safe they felt. I responded by saying I felt it was absurd. His response was two words, the first beginning with the letter F. I unfriended immediately and before I could block he blocked me. These jerks are so typical - they're like little sheep. He friended me for whatever reason, I certainly didn't friend him. These idiots don't want anyone to have any opinion or thought that isn't in lockstep with theirs, theirs being whatever is current and happening. Good riddance.
-
Nice video DR JANE.
-
During this Covid-19 sabbatical, I've dealt with many wonderful customer service reps for Amazon and other venues, but I do believe that my encounter with Juan at Santander Bank about five minutes ago was the absolute best of all my dealings.
I've also encountered the absolute nadir of Amazon sellers, nothing but thieves: V(US local delivery). May they rot in hell.

That was my first ever Barnes & Noble, and I believe it was in fact the first of the new stores in NYC back in the early 1990s. I had mail-ordered stuff from the original B&N on lower Fifth Avenue years before, but this was the coming of the new world in bookstores. The scandal then was that these new behemoth chain stores would cause the likes of Shakespeare & Co. to go out of business. Now they're in their own death throes.
But what a thrill it was to wander through that Broadway store back in the day. Did that one ever expand into carrying music and movies? I think my first B&N that had that department was the one on Sixth Ave. in the twenties.
-
What a weird day. Is it a Friday? I can't even tell from the way it feels. And this weather. Tropical storm rains off and on for the rest of the day and tomorrow as well? Yuck.
-

My doctor the other day was wearing that combination, while his assistants just had masks on. But I guess he's excused.
-
I’m guessing that dentists in particular are wearing the combo, what with all the stuff spraying out of our pie holes.
-
Nice video DR JANE.
Thanks.
-
Bryan wears the combo at work. It protects the eyes and face from all sorts of gross splatter, visible and invisible. How safe he feels I don't know but it is far safer than without it.
-
Bruce if you can become infected through your eyes this should help. What doesn't work is wearing the shield without the mask.
-

A few movies, no music.

Bruce the person would have been better to simply counter with an article from the Cleveland Clinic and then let you maintain your opinion or alter it.
https://health.clevelandclinic.org/will-a-face-shield-protect-you-from-the-coronavirus/
Actually this might be an option for you since you have issues wearing a mask, unless you have gotten used to it.

I sent you a We Transfer piece by Dohnanyi piece I thought you might like.

DR George, that's a neat gift!
Thanks, Larry. I hope I can line it all up when I put it in the frame. That's always the hard part when the frame is larger than the picture.
-
Yesterday this happened in front of Trump Tower on Fifth Avenue.
Nice! ;)
-
Yes DR GEORGE we need to see the framed poster.
You will...later tonight!
-
I used to love WaldenBooks - and there was another similarly named bookstore in the same mall that I would visit.
I switched to big box music/video store that was around for a few years.....but I keep coming back to Half Price Books [and Records].
Sometimes the clerks there are very helpful and nice....and sometimes they are just the opposite.
-
Very cloudy here today - so we mowed the lawn front & back.
Rain forecast for Sunday.....temps still in the upper 80's.....
-
Good DR GEORGE.
-
Sometimes when the frame is too big, I use the reverse side of the poster page - it is usually white. Then I can attach the photo or poster to the middle of it while it's on a flat surface and when it's put in the frame - it's centered and nice. :D
Sometimes I use some wrapping paper or even newspaper if that's appropriate to make a kind of backing. I have even used aluminum foil which ended up looking very interesting.....

Yes, Walden Books until they were just small stores in malls.
-
I asked a friend to stop with the hate and anger because of the effect on me. Instead of compassion I was treated in the same manor that the person he hates treats other people. I was mocked, humiliated, and unfriended :(
-
The Toscanini Beethoven set is truly at the top of the heap. The only other complete set I ever owned and listened to was Szell’s. Also liked Bruno Walter’s “Pastoral”.
For me, the Ninth is the killer, and I’ve listened to the Toscanini more times than the law should allow. My other favorite is the Sixth. Those two, man.
-
elmore, got it and will listen after we do the live test - I have some version of it, can't remember whose - may be in the Munch set?
-
For me, the shield is ridiculous and my opinion won't be changing. It's not going to protect the eyes because the bottom and sides are open, but if it makes millions for whichever enterprising company is making them, then that's nice. I will always have issues with anything covering my face, nose, or mouth.
-
City Vet posted this great photo of Thatch's vet, Dr Romero. I guess today is National Kitten Day.
-
Hello, everyone.
-
I've read the Notes, but not the posts, so I've no idea what's going on with all of you.
Vibes to you all.
-
I've been making a concerted effort to catch up on a thousand things this week. Making progress, but there's more to do.
-
Today I had to stop by my acupuncturist's office to pick up some herbs, then went to the bagel bakery for a bagel sandwich and some loose bagels. I do love bagels and could make a real pig of myself quite easily.
-
Bruce, nice test last night.
-
TOD:
I've been revisiting HUSTLE, the British TV show about con artists. It holds up well.
-
Have a good weekend, everyone.
Vibes to BK and Hartley for Sunday's show.
TTFN.
-
Two hours to test two. Come on by.
-
I'd enjoyed Munch's Beethoven okay, but these Toscanini performances are really other worldly. This is the first time I've ever liked the ninth. His tempos are amazing and it almost sounds like brand new music to my ears that I've not heard before.
-
And this 84-CD 1-DVD set originally retailed for $125. That's pretty amazing. Prices now range from over 200 for sets with a beat up box and which will cost twenty to thirty bucks to ship, all the way to up 2K. These box sets are pressed once and that's it. I would like to have had the Reiner set but that's gone through the roof.

Nice, Jrand! ;D

Thanks, Jane. I think it will be.

I am very grateful that Bryan wears them, but as I said he is spattered with gross body bits.

DRGinny are you going to get a Vera Bradley mask?

Thanks, Jrand. Using the back of the poster page is exactly what I was planning on doing. None of the wrapping paper that I have would be appropriate, so a white matted background, it is. Foil would be interesting, but I don't have a roll. I have the pop-up sheets because when I bought them, they were noticeably cheaper than the roll...at that time. I'll see if I have anything else that might work, too.
-
Ninety minutes to Facebook Live test.
-
Pasta papa was great today - very fresh and hot.
-
Two hours to test two. Come on by.
I won't be able to watch it live tonight, but I'll watch when I get home.
-
And now, I'm off to my parents' house for some card playing and snack grazing.
Be back later.
-
I didn't, however, get two titles I wanted today, Show Boat and War of the Worlds. No surprise, really, especially with the latter which was just released and "everyone" wants it.
That's okay, I can order them, or I'll get back to one of the stores before the sale's over.
What did you get?
-
Nice picture, JRand. Reminds of that great Kiki and Herb Christmas song: Like a snowman, dancing naked in the snow ...
-
I'm watching the Winona Ryder version of Little Women. I think I enjoyed it more before. This time through, I'm not buying some of the performances. Eric Stolz is really bad, Christian Bale is too mannered, Susan Sarandon is too noble. I do like Mary Wickes as Aunt March.
-
Damn it to HELL, I fell asleep and dozed right through the hour of nine!
I’ll watch the Kritzerland test as soon as these cats have eaten.
-

Klute, Blue Velvet, and Do the Right Thing - all looking and sounding magnificent.

Another fine preview, another lovely song, and what a GORGEOUS MUG!*

Burl Ives!
-
Sorry, I got waylaid (as usual) in You Tube. I loved the song tonight. I would like to hear it done as a duet. Perhaps you and ——————?
-
Today was a lovely day. Warm, but not hot.
-
Tonight I finally managed to get into the KFC drive-thru, without there being a long line of cars.
-
I guess I am going to have to break down and call my sister. She was supposed to call me last Thursday or Friday. No such luck. I am afraid she is drinking again.
-
I won’t judge. I’ll just harp instead.
-
Tomorrow I must clean house.
-
One more post.
-
Page Five.
-
Whoops! I forgot to fill in the blank. I was thinking perhaps a duet with Bruce and Sandy Bainum or perhaps Haley Mills!!
-
Hello
-
I didn't, however, get two titles I wanted today, Show Boat and War of the Worlds. No surprise, really, especially with the latter which was just released and "everyone" wants it.
That's okay, I can order them, or I'll get back to one of the stores before the sale's over.
What did you get?
Klute, Blue Velvet, and Do the Right Thing - all looking and sounding magnificent.
I just went to the website and bought:
The Cameraman
Show Boat
Bamboozled
Destry Rides Again
Jabberwocky
-
I wanted to pre-order Renoir’s Toni, but that’s at full price.
-
Hi, Vixmom!
-
They didn't have a Blu-ray copy, but Bamboozled is on my list, as are a couple of those others.
-
Finished with my viewing.
-
Anyone see the second test?
-
Just made the mistake of learning that Postmates will deliver to my door Roscoe's chicken and waffles. Oh, dear.
-

:( Vibes to you and your family.
-
DR TCB, I continue to find you amazing for staying sober.

Hello
Hello. How is your mother?
-
Just made the mistake of learning that Postmates will deliver to my door Roscoe's chicken and waffles. Oh, dear.
Did you resist?
-
I have so far - Monday, I may not be able to.
-
Stay strong.

Well, I just got home after playing two games of Phase 10.
-
Mom's friend Mona won BOTH games! :o
-
Not fair! >:(
-
;)
-
And now, I'm going to put the picture in the frame, and hope that it doesn't take hours.
-
But first, I'm going to ketchup on the posts.
-
Whoops! I forgot to fill in the blank. I was thinking perhaps a duet with Bruce and Sandy Bainum or perhaps Haley Mills!!
That would be cool!
-
Stay strong.
Or not. ;D

A shame. I still prefer purchasing my eBooks from Barnes & Noble Nook vs Amazon Kindle. I have noticed lately my options have been greater on Amazon. Mostly due to the same few authors, still I worry about B & N going out of business.
I went to the Westport store to grab a few goodies, and was happy to find that they ARE allowing the member discount as before. That's just in-store, not online -- I think they make up for that with free shipping (?). So all is well on that front.
I haven't checked in the past week, but I don't know if the Barnes & Noble on the corner of Broadway is open or not.
You were in a B&N store way back in the Twenties?
-
Yesterday this happened in front of Trump Tower on Fifth Avenue.

Nice! ;)
Oh, what a shame they painted the whole thing upside down!
