Well, you've read the notes, the notes were scary, and now it is time for you to post until the scary cows come home.
-
And the word of the day is: ELDRITCH!
-
First after BK
-
Since I’m still up I will go to sleep maybe
-
May e I’ll dream of old Halloween’s so I can answer the topic of the day
-
I hope you get some sleep, Vixmom!

Well, this is kinda funny...BREAKING: Georgia’s Republican Gov. Brian Kemp May Not Be Able to Vote Due to Covid-19 Quarantine (https://www.mediaite.com/election-2020/breaking-georgias-republican-gov-brian-kemp-may-not-be-able-to-vote-due-to-covid-19-quarantine/). ::)
-
According to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, Kemp has now requested an absentee ballot since voting in person on Election Day would violate guidelines put out by the CDC, which is based in the state capitol. But for Kemp to be able to vote absentee, he would have to get his mailed ballot in the next few days, fill it out, and then return in to the election office by the time polls close at 7:00 p.m. EST next Tuesday — a highly unlikely scenario in such a short timespan.
-
Today, I'll be at my sister's helping put a new tarp on her daughter's chicken coop. ::) More than likely, I'll stay and hide out for the evening.
Have a good day, all!
-
Finished uploading all Szell CDs and I've found a nice, sturdy shelf for the box. Whew!
-
Now playing: Pictures at an Exhibition.
-
Good morning, all!
-
I must pay a few bills this morning and get them into the afternoon's post.

Fifty-nine years ago, yesterday, 1961, my maternal grandmother died. It's my memory that Oct. 320, not the 31st, was trick or treat night, and it remains my most memorable Halloween.
My grandmother, whom I dearly loved and still miss far more than I miss my own mother, had been forced by her seven children into a nursing home after one too many diabetic comas. Before then, she had lived on and off with my family, and those of my Uncle Paul and my Aunts Dorothy and Lois; the other three children for various reasons refused to let her stay with them, but she lived with my family the most.
-
My memory is that she was living with us when she had her last diabetic coma. My brother Macbeth and I were in school, my mother was out - possibly one of her hypochondriac doctor visits - and the next door neighbor had come by for some reason and found my grandmother. After a family conference, my protesting grandmother, who wanted to return to her own home on Tenth Avenue and live alone, was enrolled in Garden Manor Nursing Home. I have no memory now of how long she was there, but I knew she was quite unhappy there. Some time around Oct. 24, 1961, she had a stroke, and the next week became a death watch held by my mother and her six siblings in rotation at the nursing home. Each night my mother fed us dinner, got into the car and drove to Garden Manor and sat with my grandmother from 7:00 to 11:00 or so.
-
On the night of Oct. 30, after dinner, my mother got into the car, drove out of our driveway, pulled back in, turned off the car, and walked back into the house. It's tonight, she told us. As she had pulled out of the driveway, she saw one of the neighbors' dogs sitting on top of its doghouse and baying at the moon. In 1948, on the day her father died in that house on Tenth Avenue, a dog sat on the lawn in front of the house and howled. Each time my father drove it away, it returned to continue howling.
-
Sure enough, my grandmother died that evening, and several of her children had visitations of her spirit. One day her rocking chair at my Aunt Ruth's house rocked all day, and other aunts and uncles claimed to have had feelings of her presence. In our home, between 1961 and 1979, when I moved to Manhattan, she was occasionally seen, and there were many nights I could feel someone sitting on the edge of my bed.
-
Last night I had a dream about the Macbeths and my father. I remember little about it now, but it involved a drive to Miami University and a stop at a Dairy Queen for an ice cream.
-
Sean Connery has died. That saddens me. He will always be for me the only 007.
-
Good morning, all.

Damn it to hell.
-
SAD NEWS:
Sean Connery has died.
I had the pleasure of meeting Connery back in the late 1960s. My publicity client at the time, director Edward Dmytryk, threw a Christmas party and Connery was among the guests. They were about to go off to Spain to film , SHALAKO with Brigitte Bardot.
-
T.O.D.
I have no specific memories on Halloween...except going oit "Trick or Treating".
-
I have yet to get through TORA TORA TORA.
Actually, that’s not technically true. I went to see it with the parental units when it played the probably-magnificent International 70 in downtown Cincinnati while on a visit from school. I have almost no memory of it, not even whether I was interested in it or bored or something in between.
But the few times I’ve popped in the Blu-ray, I haven’t gotten far. I actually want to. It just hasn’t succeeded yet.
-
It was 27 degrees out when I got up, and is supposedly getting into the mid-40s today. Thank goodness it’s sunny, because we’ll be out there for a while. Kristi is giving a reading of some Poe and a couple of other authors at one of the local libraries, outside and socially distanced.
-
But is Hans Christian Anderson ever risqué?

Growing up near LA, we always had an outdoor costume parade at school. There are photos somewhere.
One year, I went as a giant bag of groceries. Another year, as a huge "package to Grandma."
-
As much fun as the trick-or-treating was the aftermath, where you'd spread it all out, sort it, and engage in trading/bargaining.

Saturday, October 31, 2020.
We are living in the future!
-
Oh wait....I have to satanize my hands......
-
Good morning, all.
-
Connery was excellent as Bond, but his Robin Hood in Robin and Marian was my favorite.
-
Nine hours of sleep. Excellent. But my arms are still sore.
-
Good morning!
-
Last night I watched SLEEPY HOLLOW, which was most enjoyable. I'd intended to do that several nights ago but well laid plans, etc...
Later, I fell asleep to the dulcet strains of TCM running a couple of horror-ish flicks, which were just interesting enough to lull me into that perfect falling-asleep state. I keep the volume super low when doing that, but even so, it will eventually wake me up and I have to turn it off. As well one should. So at some point they were playing THE WICKER MAN, which worked its way into a dream in which there had been a remake (not the Nicholas Cage one but something fairly recent), and I was hearing some of the lines as spoken by different actors than those in the original film...and I was also imagining that the lines had been rewritten/rearranged slightly. Interesting, in an odd way. But mainly, seeing that it was going be on, and then having that happen, all conspired to make me really want to take that Blu-ray out and watch it for my first time in several years.
-
I wish I liked the original Wicker Man more. I loved Edward Woodward and the premise, but I was bored by too much of the movie, largely because the ending was, IMO, a foregone conclusion.
Midsommer played a similar game several years ago. But a greater cast of characters, a funny/eerie sendup of misogyny and a few shocks all made it a creepier and more satisfying experience.
-
But my arms are still sore.
Did you just fly in? :D
-
One bar mitzvah; check.
It all came off very nicely. And I am glad not to have to dress up anymore.
-
I have to say, a lot of churches and synagogues have been forced by the pandemic to come up the learning curve on tech savvy, and a lot of institutions have really risen to meet the challenge.
-
Good Morning - I missed a HHW day yesterday. It was not a pleasant day to begin with. So, we move on.
Today - I have great plans, we'll see if they pan out.
-
I have to say, a lot of churches and synagogues have been forced by the pandemic to come up the learning curve on tech savvy, and a lot of institutions have really risen to meet the challenge.

Does anyone here have the National Theatre Recording of A LITTLE NIGHT MUSIC with Judi Dench? If so, is there any way for me to get the mp3 files? Thanks!
-
Teal pumpkins are a symbol of food allergy awareness, and are supposed to signify that non-food treats are on offer.

I have it, but alas, in a box somewhere, and I have no idea how to put my hands on it immediately.
-
Oh good; DR Matthew has responded to the call.
-
I don't like scary movies and, as a result, in general avoid them.
-
Implied scariness is fine; for example, the new adaptation of The Turn of the Screw (with Colin Farrell) on BritBox.
It may not be new, but it is new to BritBox.

DR Larry... here you go. If anyone else would like to listen or whatever, it's an open link. My pleasure to share.

I have never heard of this. It's a good idea...assuming trick-or-treaters also know what it means.

Last night, my comuter had a major Windows 10 update. It was taking more than an hour, so I just went to sleep. I'm about to log on and see what's different. :-\

TOD:
I’m not big on Halloween anymore but as a kid, I remember making a fun costume as a headless man. I made a papier mache head with fangs and bloodshot eyes that I carried around. It was fun. Of course, there are no photos. There are few photos of anything that us kids were interested in.

Yes, indeed. Thank you, DR Matthew!
-
I took a bath. Thanks to Judy, my apartment - even with two windows open - is hotter than hell. Yesterday I turned on the AC, but today the cats and I have lazed about in an unwanted lethargy since I do not want to run the AC continually.
-
Don't forget to set your clocks back, y'all!
-
I don't have many memories of Halloween.....that I recall.....
-
Vibes for DR MATTHEW.
-
Of course tonight is the SECOND full moon of October - so that makes it a BLUE Moon.

It is a shame there isn't a photo of you in that cool costume. There aren't many of me either, and not as many as there should be of our children.
-
I'm up, I'm up - I guess I got eight hours of sleep - was up for two hours earlier but went back to bed.
-
BLUE Moon.
Great song! ;)

I have had many wonderful Halloweens over the years, when I was young and when the boys were young. Nothing exciting has happened in a long time. Tonight our neighbor will bring her grandchildren over to trick-or-treat.
-
Hello, everyone.
-
HAPPY HALLOWEEN!!
-
I used to love Halloween. When I lived in Alexandria, VA Halloween was a very big deal. I don't know how my street came to be THE place to trick-or-treat, but it was. Hundreds of people would show up, with or without kids. Then the Washington Post had an article on us on the front page. As if we needed more people! Sooo many kids would come to the door that there was no point in going inside; most of us would just dress warm and stand outside. Some of my neighbors liked to dress in costume and we never knew who would be whom (or what) that year. And, of course, many parties. Senator Mark Warner lived down at the corner and his property had a patio directly off the sidewalk. One year he decorated that area appropriately and had an old chest with all sorts of ghoulish things inside. He was right there, mingling with the rest of us. Which is how I like my politicians. It was great fun.
-
No one comes here, which is best, as the stairs aren't very safe. I don't think I've even seen any trick-or-treaters in this neighborhood at all.
-
BLUE Moon.
Great song! ;)
Agreed! Would you like to sing it for us?
-
I have no news except to say that Choc Zero's Halloween candies are very good. This is the first time I've tried their white chocolate. It couldn't be better.
-
TTFN.

No one went to Ashland, or has ever come here. I am very excited a couple of children are coming tonight. Their grandmother asked a few of us if she could leave candy at our doors and they wouldn't bother us. I put the pumpkin basket outside for the candy and Keith put a pair of white hands coming up out of the ground. I said they must "bother" me. I am very excited.
-

Yum. I still haven't tried them. I would have to order more than I want.
-
I am wearing my decorative Halloween sweatshirt today.
-
I tried to find a couple of photos to share. One is of me wearing a Parisian outfit my mother made for me. The other is of Craig with a nail going through his nose and blood dripping down that Bryan created.
-
Our trick-or-treaters liked my sweatshirt.
-
This morning we chatted with Freyja who was wearing Halloween pajama's. Just now we received a photo of her in her Halloween onesie with a hood. I think she was a leopard. There was also a video of her looking super cute playing with pumpkins. This is a memorable Halloween.
-
Hopefully next year we can spend Halloween with them.
-
Four!
-
Good Evening - Happy Halloween - for whatever it is this year.
-
So much for a ME day, a relaxing day, or futzing and finessing. The entire day (well, I did get up very late) was spent writing the third set of liner notes, doing the credits for the first two releases, the blurbs - just endless work. And then listening to a master to approve. And some Kritzerland show stuff. I'm exhausted from all the brain work and typing. Haven't left the house. Made bow tie pasta with red sauce, meat, and onions. It was really great.
-
Finally back in Szell land but we're in a heavy Mozart section - symphonies, violin and piano concertos, and more symphonies.
-
and more symphonies.
There are quite a lot of them. :)
-
Tonight, we watched How Green Was My Valley. Which I had never seen. Not really a Halloween pic. Loved all the choral singing.
-
I haven't seen How Green in decades. I watched around the same time as the Masterpiece Theater version and I remember liking both.
-
Gratuitous post No. 100!
-
Well, the ushering tonight was anything but interesting. It was largely sitting or standing around and pointing out the restrooms to the few patrons who used them. It was an outdoor interactive event where people were given clues to solve a mystery. I don't know if they liked it or not, but at least they were doing something instead of watching each other.
One of the actors broke a glass goblet and shards spread everywhere. There was no one to clean it up. Steering people clear of that was the highlight of my evening.
-
The Shows Must Go On! schedule is strange. I just saw that Monday afternoon, they're going to start airing a tape of Simon Callow in his Being Shakespeare show. There's no place but YouTube to find out what's going on.
-
The Szell Mozarts I listened to the most back in the day were the Clarinet Concerto and Sinfonia Concertante. I “knew” Cleveland Orchestra principals Bob Marcellus (clarinet) and Abe Skernick (viola) in accompanying a few of their students, but I also thought those pieces, and the recordings with them soloing, were quite wonderful.
-
The tango show is spectacular.
https://youtu.be/hYTbnmcFBJA
-
This is Argentine tango, which is not what I dance most often. But it’s beautiful.
-
Good evening.
-
This was a great Halloween.
-
We set up a table at the end of the driveway with lights and a jack-o-lantern. It seems every year I buy a pumpkin and Sandra has to work and doesn't have time to carve it. This year she did.
The neighborhood kids all came over to see what we were doing. Then they came back when it started to get dark. The trick-or-treating started early this year and it was done by 8 p.m.
We always have some non-food treats for kids who can't have sweets. Plus Sandra got a huge box of potato chip bags on Prime Day, and she didn't like a bunch of the flavors. She put those on the table. Most kids took a reasonable amount of candy from the bowl, a cookie, and some chips. Some of the non-food things disappeared too, I think.
It seemed to be all neighborhood kids, and we visited with some of the parents, too.
-
Especially for DR John, I have a good movie to recommend LOVE AND MONSTERS.
-
My son's family came over and we all sat outside. GS discovered the neighbors' basketball and hoop, and he tried to shoot hoops, which was hilarious, because he could throw the ball up about five feet.
I got out my folding wagon, and he and Ga-Pa pushed/pulled it up and down the street several times.
And he thought Leonard's flopping fish was hilarious.
-
And there is too much leftover candy.
-
Especially for DR John, I have a good movie to recommend LOVE AND MONSTERS.
I will check it out.
-
Good night, all.
-
Don't forget we lose an hour of sleep tonight.
-
Did a quick Gelson's run and got taco shells so instead of pasta tomorrow, I'll make the rest of the meat and onions and have two or three homegrown tacos - got a tomato, shredded lettuce and I have shredded cheddar here, and got some Gelson's salsa to put on top.
-

Yikes! Not much worse than no one to clean up messes when ushering!
-
Our trick-or-treaters liked my sweatshirt.
Nice!
-
PAGE FIVE DANCE!!
-
Don't forget we lose an hour of sleep tonight.
No, we gain one
-
I also thought I deserved a treat, so I got a small chocolate mousse - it probably put me close to 1300 calories, but that's fine. I haven't done any real splurge days. And not having pasta with butter tomorrow will be good.
-
I had a treat tonight as well. I went to a farmers market today to get produce.
There was a stand there with rum cakes, Vixdad’s favorite. I bought a vanilla rum cake and decided to treat myself to a slice. Noom estimated it at 310 calories, but even with the cake I was under 1000 for the day and I walked about 7 miles today so hopefully it won’t show up on my scale tomorrow
-
Nary a trick nor treater today.
-
But then we haven’t had one in a few years now, no kids left in the neighborhood
-
I learned how VPN works
-
I streamed a show being shown in Germany
-
The American actors and British spoke English but the Russian and a German actors switched between English and Russian depending on whom they were speaking to and the subtitles were in German
-
Did I mention I don’t speak Getman?
-
Nonetheless I was able to get the jist of things from the action
-
And I feel very tech savvy at the moment
-
(Don’t burst my bubble)
-
Ok ok, I had to get talked through setting it up
-
By this 19 year old kid I know
-
But it worked and that’s the main thing
-

I haven't watched the whole show yet, but I really like what I've seen, so far!
-
And Teddy Kempner, who played the bartender, was in the London revival of Kiss Me, Kate with the World's Sexiest Man Alive Brent Barrett, that I saw in London!
-
Today, I went to my sister's and we took down the tarp that had been covering her daughter's chicken coop.
-
It was wearing out and needed to be replaced.
-
We put up a new tarp over it and secured it with bungee cords.
-
Then, I caulked some gaps in the roof of the separate covered area so that it wouldn't leak as much.
-
I was there for about three hours. :P
-
For dinner after that, I went to Panda Express and got some Black Pepper Chicken and Kung Pao Chicken.
-
Just two medium entrees, not their two-entree plate.
-
I brought them home and ate about half of each...quite delish, as usual. ;D
-
six!!!!!!
