Title: GIRDING THE LOINS FOR THE BIG MOVE
Post by: bk on May 03, 2021, 12:03:05 AM
Well, you've read the notes, the notes girded their loins and moved, and now it is time for you to post until the moving cows come home.

I had a strange dream which took place in Middletown, OH. I can't put the dream together now, but much of it took place in our old house on Goldman Avenue, and I was nursing/visiting a young war veteran(?) whose bed was in our house - was it my brother Randy? He was in the dream - and I had to ask my Dad about laundry and clean bedding. Then I was shelving books at the Middletown Public Library, but the librarian was an alcoholic former friend from the Library of Congress.

I had a nice telephone conversation with DR Ginny yesterday, and I made a remark about reading a FB post that said cats were like toddlers.  This is really true. My three devils, from their curiosity to impulsive behavior to their constant quest for food, are like babies who've just learned to walk.

I first saw Shock Corridor as a young'un when it was released (IMDb says September 1963), because by then I was obsessed with anything that promised to be a thriller or horror film. I was no doubt thrilled with the thrilling aspects, but I probably didn't understand everything else going on in the movie.

I didn't see it again or really even hear of it for years, like, till the late 1990s or early 2000s when I was having fun buying up laserdiscs that people were beginning to let go in favor of DVDs. On eBay I won a bid for the Criterion LDs of that and The Naked Kiss and I always fondly remembered the adventure of driving to downtown Stamford and meeting the seller for those pristine copies in the Stamford Library Starbucks or whatever it was. I devoured them over the next couple of nights. It was my first time to see Naked Kiss, and I, too, will never forget the impact of the opening scene.

Years later I bought the Criterion Blu-rays as soon as they were released, but for whatever reason I never got around to taking them out and enjoying them -- until literally just a couple of months ago. I don't know if I posted about it. I had just watched a documentary or two about Fuller so I started with those two movies again, then branched out to Pickup on South Street, The Crimson Kimono, and White Dog. I have others that still need watching, but those are five amazing and stunning films.

TOD

In my growing up years I knew only two things -- the fish sticks served in the school cafeterias on Fridays, and tuna salad sandwiches. Fish and chips would have been next, from whatever fast food chain came to town first.

I was depraved on account of I was deprived. It wasn't till after my college years that I got to know the pleasures of actual, you know, "fish" and other seafood. Even now, I should eat it much more often than I do, but the meat aesthetic is ingrained and it's still not always the first thing I think of. But I love it.

I'm up, I'm up - six hours of sleep. I was awakened at 8:15 because the cell phone was ringing. I didn't get to it in time, but called whoever it was right back. The movers. They were at the warehouse waiting for someone to let them in. I couldn't believe it. I told them I had nothing to do with the warehouse or that part of the move and to please call the helper, who has known about this for a week now. Of course, on the computer, there's no way to see her number in our texts, so I suggested they call their boss, who definitely had her number. Meanwhile, I texted her (no response, naturally) then got the number on the phone text because on the phone it gives you that information. I called them back and they'd already called her and she said she was on her way and would be there in a few minutes. Hopefully, that happened. It shouldn't slow anything down as long as they got going by eight-thirty. Hopefully, the rest of this day will go smoother.

It's been a morning. Annabelle will not eat today and I'm wonderign if her allergies include pollen, since the pollen count is out of control today. So, she's been a handful, while Thatch and Stella to show how much they love me by climbing all over the score Joshie brought me to work on, sleeping on it, and smothering me with affection.

Joshie came by and climbed the Big Ladder to put away a lot of cat food and I have a computer table again now the cartopns of Fancy Feast are put away.

I am currently working on updating the last three of my books that are out-of-print:

THE MUSICAL: From Broadway to Hollywood
ONE GOOD FILM DESERVES ANOTHER: A Survey of Movie Sequels
MAKE IT AGAIN, SAM: A Survey of Movie Remakes

I've finished the first two and sent off to the publisher, and I'm almost halfway through the third.

Much harder job than I thought it would be.

I'd rather be writing another one-person play.

I didn't know that about Washington.  I have never served jury duty.  The first time I was called up Bryan was just a couple of months old.  The second time was in Ashland and one of my specialists wrote a note that exempted me from jury duty forever.   Right now I am kind of in-between doctors and would hate to need one of those letters again.

Are you going to bake it?  I would except I don't bake anymore so as not to eat the goodies I bake.

Eventually. Saturday maybe.

We, finally got our fence fixed...after a car crashed into it.

It was a student drive, who pressed down on the gas instead of the brake.

That took a long time.  Aside from how it looked was it a problem having an insecure fence?

The original fence was fine.  The driver paid for the repairs.

I'm back, finally. I never need to have a day like this for the rest of however long I have left on this planet. EVER. Helpers all showed up at noon, but packing up two huge trucks took longer than they thought so they didn't get to the new place until 2:15. It didn't help that the helper wasn't there to let them in at eight - she got there around eight thirty. The problem was,, of course, that I was paying the helpers from noon. Anyway, the two trucks finally arrived and the five guys who were doing it, maybe six, were really good and really friendly. They got the shelves set up very quickly and all of them fit in the bigger unit, with enough room to have aisles for easy access. Then they began unloading the CD boxes - the big boxes and sealed little boxes all went to one of the smaller units, as that's all excess stock. Then the three guys who were there began organizing the Kritzerland unit and, well, I have to have a time out right now so the rest will be in the notes. Suffice it to say, that amazingly we got everything done by six. The move cost twelve hundred more than the estimate and really would have cost 2K more but because they were so late and all that stuff, they took eight hundred off the bill. I gave some stuff I didn't want to the workers, who were very grateful. And we threw out some stuff. By four o'clock, I knew we'd need the fourth space, so I went and paid for that. There's not much in that space right now, just excess stock - so much excess stock - endless excess stock - but now, in a week or two, I'll have a couple of people come out with me and we'll take some boxes out of the jam-packed excess box unit (you literally cannot even walk into that room right now, so I'd have no way of getting to anything. When originally setting up that unit, we had two nice aisles and I could see what was what. But none of us knew at that time that the second truck had about sixty more boxes of excess stock. So, we'll move some of that stuff to the fourth unit, and I'll bring some stuff from the garage here, too. Then at some point, I'll start going through the unit that has my personal stuff in it, and my intention is to toss as much as I possibly can.

Thank you to everyone who expressed condolences for the loss of my high school drama teacher.  Mind you, I hadn't really had any contact with him for almost 50 years, but it still feels like a loss.

My high school drama teacher’s husband died last month.  I taught one of her drama classes my senior year, and I went back to see her when I came home from college, but I haven’t seen her since.  I thought of sending a card, but I wasn’t sure of her address.

They normally last a year, but mine have rarely lasted that long.  Next year (or whenever these die)I am going to spend the extra money to upgrade to the larger battery pack.

That's weird.  I wonder if something is wrong with the scooter itself to cause the battery to degrade sooner than it should.

No, it happens all the time with the little batteries.  If you carry groceries or packages on them, it wears them down faster.

So, I'm listening to The Manhattan Transfer's first album (https://music.amazon.com/albums/B07M7VL8TD) through Amazon Music.  It's free for Prime members so that's pretty cool...except that one song is not the original recording!  The song "Gloria" is a live, a cappella version from a later album (at least, it's still The Manhattan Transfer, and it's a good version)!  I wonder how that happened when all the other songs are correct! ???
