Title: CLOSE ENCOUNTERS OF THE VARIETY KIND

Well, you've read the notes, the notes had close encounters, and now it is time for you to post until the close encounters of the cows come home.

I spent most of yesterday feeling quite puny and sickly, so I went to bed around 8:30 and this morning I am feeling rather good.

Before he arrives at 10:00, I must take the recyclables to the basement, finish kitty cleanup, make the bed, and write him a check for last week's labor.

I received a text from my [probably ex] friend Debby wondering what she did wrong and why she was not cast as The Narrator.

I told her why - for the most part.

I am now a Dream Crusher, it was the LAST PART she ever wanted to play, and she will never audition for another show.

And that's my Monday so far.

Had a classic former-workplace dream. This one, however, also embraced additional territories such as music and housecleaning and former cast members. I think I still remember quite a bit of it, but the funny thing having to do with music is that while sitting at my desk at work, I found myself playing the piano part in something, and this one song required only counting the rests and hitting a B-flat major chord on the button. The gal sitting next to me was finding that more amusing every time we did it, so I showed her my score and how many notations I'd made all over that page just for playing one chord. As I did so, I was embarrassed to find that most of the notations didn't pertain to the music at all, but were little reminders of things to do at work or elsewhere. Actually, the rest of the dream was no better, embarrassment-wise. Oy!

DR CHAS SMITH the Dream-O-Matic 6000 says that your dream indicates that - like DR ELMORE - while you sometimes think of your music work as play.....it sometimes becomes work.

You also consider playing the piano a communication activity that can help draw folks to you and initiate conversations....

But there are also just so many hours in the day and your two activities encroach on each other in unexpected and sometimes annoying ways.

The B-flat major chord on the button is a tribute to Ethel Merman....and you would like to play in the pit for GYPSY....which may happen soon.

It was a soft brace for a hairline fracture in my ankle.  Once the break healed I continued wearing it as I noticed the pain from the 2 year old sprain was finally improving.

Just saw a great kids book in an overstock catalog. The Great Dictionary Caper.

The words escape the dictionary and flock to Hollywood for a huge annual event—Lexi-Con. Liberated from the pages, the words get together in groups including an onomatopoeia marching band, the palindrome family reunion and hide-and-seek antonyms. It’s all great fun until the words disagree and begin to fall apart.

Good Morning.  Home from Orlando.  Glad to be home with my boys- they seemed happy to see me.  Today begins a short 2 week summer class on iMovie at school which will be fun.  Other than that, we'll see how the summer goes.  I have a trip planned in August for Disneyland, but that's about it.  We'll see if we can get some of these self-imposed projects off the ground at home, or maybe just chill for the summer - and hopefully many bike rides, of course.  In the meantime... here we are.

So, JRand and anyone else, what would be your dream role? Even if you’re not a performer.

I would love to play Jess in The Good Companions. I can’t sing or dance, but, hey, it’s a “dream” role.

Years ago, I saw a local children's summer production (it was really quite good) where they actually cast three women as the narrator(s), and they each took sections, as well as sang in harmony at certain times.  The three women who sang were their seniors who were graduating from the program, so it made sense to feature them, but any one of them could've played the role alone and sung and acted the hell out of it.

DR Jrand70, when I cast The Fantasticks around 1977 - DR Ginny will know the date! - I lost a regular player who wanted the Old Actor role, and much as I liked him and would happily cast him in less virtuosic parts, he never returned to audition again. His last words to me were that I owed him the part.

I see a lot of that double/triple casting in the show on YouTube DR GEORGE.

....and there is always that one who isn't quite up to it.....it annoys me.....I understand having that many girls in a school that you "reward" with the part....   But like the horrifying Children's Chorus.....I can do without it.....  Here's a thought, folks!  The audience is your audience!

Since we don't have many seats to sell - it is not an issue this season. We don't need to put in as many folks as we can fit on the stage.....so that all of their relatives buy tickets.

Monday evening greetings!  We are back from a family-filled long weekend in Illinois.  We went last Wednesday to Normal, IL, to visit my niece Laura before she moves to Florida this coming weekend.  The bonus is that her parents were there from Michigan, so I got to see my sister in person for the first time since Thanksgiving 2019.  There were a few tears mixed in with that first hug.

After spending most of the day Thursday with those folks, we drove to Wheaton, IL, to visit with Charlotte and her parents.  There was a one-year (plus 10 days) birthday celebration for her on Saturday, for which we were joined by her other grandparents and some assorted great-grandparents.  Then yesterday, Mary Linda and Rob hosted a lovely Father’s Day brunch before her relatives left to return to Michigan.

So, last night Charlotte had been in bed a couple of hours and the grown-ups were about to go to sleep when all the cell phones screamed and the city emergency sirens began wailing.  Rob knocked on our door and said, “Tornado warning, basement - NOW!”  We spent about 45 minutes sheltering while a tornado did, indeed, touch down about 15 miles to the south.  Fortunately, everyone (including Charlotte) was able to settle back down and get a good night’s sleep.

DR Vixmom, I’m sending Vixdad my strongest get well vibes!  Severe sprains are no fun and can sometimes be worse that a break - they know how to fix those…

She's made the decision.

That makes it so much easier!  Richard and I were lucky enough that both mothers made their own similar decisions.  Hope it all goes smoothly, DR John G.

I need to find a new book to listen to. I started The Man Who Lived Under Ground, a Richard Wright novel. it isn't long, but the story is so upsetting that I may not finish.

I doubt the latest episode of Cher will be all that fun. The guest stars are Art Garfunkel, Charo and McLean Stevenson. Oh, joy.

Oh my.  I am glad the tornado didn't touch down at their house.

If it had, I suspect we wouldn’t have come home today.

The first active NFL player has come out of the closet, a player named Carl Nassib from the Las Vegas Raiders. So, another barrier broken.

Ginny, that was a scary tornado story. Glad you're OK and that you have a basement you can get into. We don't have basements in Texas, except at the Alamo (a Pee-Wee Herman reference).

Yes, and Mary Linda and I were grateful to be with a priest and a paramedic.

Sounds good. Please tell us about the WDW experience, insofar as masks and distancing and other considerations are concerned. Also, do you stay in the "World" or outside?

When I got there, mask were required in queues, on attractions, in buildings and on transportation.  A few days later (June 15) masks were only required on transportation.  They basically have been dropping distancing regulations etc.  They encouraged non-vaccinated people to continue to wear their masks, etc.  I never felt weird or un-safe, then again, my trust in people is higher than most.  There are still very few live shows - although they are slowly coming back - and park hours are reduced as there are no fireworks at the moment - they will return on July 1.  I stayed on Disney property at the Pop Century Resort, I always seem to end up there, and it was fine.  They are not packing people on Disney busses, which is nice and I hope it stays that way.  There are still some plexiglass dividers in queues and on attractions, but those are slowly going away.  My hope is that everyone remembers to always social distance!!!

Cher sang Jimmy Webb songs with Art Garfunkel while Webb played piano. That was nice. Then she sang America with Charo. Not so good.

The pesky fly, which somehow found its way into our apartment a day or so ago, has finally met its end. It was a challenge, as somewhere along the way we lost our fly swatter.

I never had an actual fly swatter.  I just used and empty paper towel roll.  It's certainly not perfect, but it works for me. ;D

Went and cleaned out my desk today. First time at the office in 15 months or so.

Today was the first day that people with proof of vaccination could work without masks.  More people went without them (and not by a lot), but most people pretty much distanced, anyway, so I think most people are just glad that it's not a requirement, anymore.

Finished with my viewing and now listening to Gounod's Romeo and Juliette - as much as I've enjoyed other Gounod, this one's not my favorite so far, although some pretty music finally just appeared. Up until now it's all been declamatory.
