Title: THE PAPERBACK BOOK FAIR AND OTHER TALES OF TALES

Well, you've read the notes, the notes were in paperback and had tales, and now it is time for you to post until the paperback cows come home.

I will not defend all the nasty comments posted about hominy after I signed off last night. I do not like grits, but I do love hominy. What I find amazing is how the hell it was ever discovered. My grandmother used to make it in our kitchen and then can it. All I remember about those sessions from the mid-1950s is that she was constanrtly shooing me away from getting too close to the sink because it was filled with lye, which literally ate away the outside shell of the corn kernel. "You'll lose an eye!" she would tell mde, "Get back!"

It was chilly last night. Around 4:00 Annabelle crawled under the blankets with me, and Thatch settled next to me shortly after that. Last week, after our DR vixmom submitted my name to the Penzey spices people that I needed a hug, I received a fluffy blanket from them with their good wishes. It's at the foot of my bed with the cats' kitty blanket, and Stella has dec lared them her territory.

I have found the videos about the restorations of the three panel cinerama films fascinating. All the work that goes into it to save a part of film history. I always wished to have seen one. However by the time I was old enough to go to the movies the 3 panels was a thing of the past replaced by 70mm ultra Panavision. I believe I saw some movies but never on a large curved screen because if I did I’m sure I’d remember it.

I believe Abel Gance’s Napoleon was screened like this back in the ‘80s, but I never got the chance to see it.

I have never had hominy. At least not to my knowledge, but I don't believe I ever heard it even mentioned in my family.

We did start eating grits when we moved to Florida in 1960, just regular old white grits that were served with breakfast literally everywhere, and on the rare occasion I get to have them now I still love them with butter, salt and pepper.

In fact, I can probably declare pretty accurately to DR Ron Pulliam that my first grits were had in the Carolinas on our first drives down there from Ohio. By the time we were settled in Fort Lauderdale, grits were a regular thing for us. I certainly continued loving hash browns and such as an alternative, but I really took to being a South Florida Southerner in those days.

I love hominy in pozole, a Mexican soup usually made with pork or beef. It’s served with lime, fresh cabbage or lettuce, avocado, radishes and more on the side and you top it to your taste.

Not hominy-related, directly, but I have seen a lot of chili recipes that use masa harina (corn flower) as a thickening agent.
Title: Re: THE PAPERBACK BOOK FAIR AND OTHER TALES OF TALES
Post by: John G. on March 21, 2022, 08:42:44 AM
Masa is a good thickener for chili, but use it sparingly. It can suddenly turn too thick on you. (Speaking from experience.)

I love a good film noir. Favorite actors in them include Richard Widmark, Ida Lupino, Robert Mitchum, Lizbeth Scott, Glenn Ford, John Payne, Raymond Burr, Robert Ryan and Dan Duryea. And, of course, Bogie and Bacall.

I have to tell you that the dog in question has a progression of lives and masters, one of whom is the primary and to whom the dog keeps returning.

Title: Re: THE PAPERBACK BOOK FAIR AND OTHER TALES OF TALES
Post by: Ron Pulliam on March 21, 2022, 10:00:23 AM
I say it "may not be" true noir because it is so classic and so well-revered that it doesn't quite fit into that niche that noir fans appreciate...a film not well-remembered but which is dark and somewhat harshly realistic.

Lat night we watched it. We went to the arboretum again today. Spring is moving along, and it will soon be too hot to go outside.

I guess they don't have an enclosed section for those hot summer days.

Ordered in a BLTA and ate that - very good. Allergies continue. Then had to go get a rapid test at the theater - negative.

Excellent.

DR JOHN G what is a castration musical?

A musical in which one of the plot lines deals with the castration or potential castration of a character. In Chee-Chee, it's a leading character, as I recall. The Knife is another castration musical, or just a transgender musical. Splitting hairs?

Back from a lovely day visiting with my high school friend. We walked. We ate. We talked. It's like the intervening years never happened!

I love it when that happens.

Watching Cavalli's opera, Il Giasone, based on a wacked out version of Jason and the Golden Fleece. The baroque melodies are lovely. I think Jason is a countertenor, which might make it fitting for the subject of castration musicals.

So far, only one person from our cast has tested both positive and negative in the home test - so PCR for him and then we'll see what happens. We talked about postponing a week and only doing a five-week run but I think that would be difficult to rearrange Richard Allen's schedule, which took him ages to make work. We'll try to mush ahead. I have never in all my years of making theater, run into a production with this many cast issues. I hope this is the last of them because I'm not going to open the show unless it's ready to open. Minimally, I'll make them reschedule the reviewers to the second week.

Uploading is a big ol' chore because the external CD drive doesn't work on the big boy computer, but does work on the laptop. So, I have to transfer to the laptop, then put it on a thumb drive, then bring the thumb drive back to the big boy computer and transfer it into Music. Too many damn steps.

I vaguely remember reading about The Knife sometime after it was over.  Wasn't Mandy Patinkin in that? ???

Because this way, they got you to pay for the disc twice.

I bought the first one (the green one) on its own, but then I got the other one as part of a lot of seven laserdiscs, also on eBay.

The cost of that seven-disc lot was too good to pass up, even with the duplicate title...but since it had the other cover (that I didn't even know about), I didn't mind at all.

The booklet says, "JAY commence the first complete recording of the original version of the musical with the original orchestrations by Philip J. Lang at Abbey Road Studios, London on October 5 1996 and completed it at Clinton Recording Studios, New York on October 19 1996. It was released on April 8 2022."
