Well, you've read the notes, the notes went thud, thud, thud, and now it is time for you to post until the thudding cows come home.
-
And the word of the day is: VIVACIOUS!
-
Notes begun. Beguined.

TOD: never read a Crichton book.

I'm fond of Coma, based on a Robin Cook book but directed by Crichton. I enjoyed the first Jurassic Park movie. Book-wise, I loved Andromeda Strain and The Terminal Man, and a couple of his other early books, including A Case of Need, which he wrote under one of his pseudonyms and which was made into the movie The Carey Treatment.
-
Oh, forgot Binary, also written under pseudonym, John Lange - he wrote quite a few books under Lange. Binary was turned into a terrific ABC Movie of the Week with E.G. Marshall. Maybe it's on YouTube.
-
Topic of the Day: Like Rodzinski, I never read a book by Michael Crichton. :-\
-
As for Michael Crichton movies, I've only seen:
The Andromeda Strain
Jurassic Park 1-3 (and none of the others)
Looker (that seems like it needs a remake)
Twister
-
He was a real favorite back then - and then came a newcomer named Stephen King.
-
Guess I should shower and get to bed.
-
Good morning, all!
-
I had another pretty good night of sleep. I was good for 6.5 hours when I had a bathroom break around 3:30. The last two hours were spent in cuddling with Annabelle and Thatch.
-
My legs have not yet recovered from last Monday's outing, and this has me worried. Usually, I'm good after two days and we're now on five this week. I'm rather depressed over it.
-
DR John G, I am so sorry to hear about the disaster and your community. My heart goes out to those poor missing girls and their families.
-
Last night was the first July 4 I can remember without the afternoon and evening noise of fireworks. I'm very relieved for the cats, though, because they've already been though several months of trauma with the construction outside the window, and the fireworks in the past have sent them into hiding for hours.
-
I've read only one Crichton book: Jurassic Park, which I read just before it was published. The owners of The Drama Book Shop had been to the ALA(?) and brought me a promotional copy.
-
Good morning.
-
Good morning, all.
-
It’s raining.
-
I’ve read only a few Michael Crichton novels: Rising Sun, Westworld and The Andromeda Strain, which are listed, I guess, in descending order. as for movies, I liked Coma, The Great Train Robbery and Looker, the latter two more for the casts than anything else.
-
Good morning, all.
-
TOD: I really liked Coma.
I don't recall much detail of The Andromeda Strain, though I liked it - but I remember which local neighborhood movie theater I saw it in, so I must have seen it before I was old enough to appreciate its implications.
-
Is the Fourth over?
Yes, I believe it is now. It was a late one last night, as more fireworks were heard from my house than in some years. I think there was an official display up the road a bit, but others were obviously from right here in the 'hood, pretty close by. Big boomers, too. People seem to be getting bolder with bringing in out-of-state ones that are illegal here, but I don't know if there's much if any enforcement. I used to think they had to get them from the Carolinas or other locales in the south, but I was corrected on that a couple of years ago -- you only must needs drive an hour and a half and cross the river into Pennsylvania to get them.

TOD
Coma was my introduction to Crichton, as well as to the novels of Robin Cook. I loved that film (and book), and still do, with special thanks to the Jerry Goldsmith score and to moments in both the story and film that hold their power incredibly. (It's funny how when BK first mentioned it, I initially forgot Crichton wasn't the author. I read a couple more of Cook's medical conspiracy novels and they were certainly page-turners, but I think none quite rose to the level of Coma, at least for me.)
I'm embarrassed to say I don't believe I've ever read or seen either The Terminal Man or The Andromeda Strain, at least not all the way through. I remember an opening scene or two of the latter, but that doesn't alleviate the shame in which I now hide my head. Must rectify this situation.
I read The Great Train Robbery and eventually saw the movie (just on TV), and I've wanted to return to both the book and the film because I remember liking the period descriptions and atmosphere, if not the details.
Jurassic Park - just the film, never read the book. I've enjoyed the first three (or was it four?) movies, but they're pure entertainment, and I have no interest beyond those few films or in the subject.
I read Rising Sun and then saw the movie, and I think the same with Disclosure. I remember very little of either, and would probably enjoy returning to those sometime.
I never got into the Westworld craze. Didn't even see the movie for many years. When I watched it a few years ago, I was less than enthralled, but honestly I don't even remember why. I saw Looker for my first time several years ago, and liked it and its excellent cast (Susan Dey and all), but it's on a familiar Twilight Zone-ish theme that left me a little 'eh'. I could probably stand a second go at both of these.
-
I must get on with my day, which - oddly - doesn't feel so much like a Saturday.
But it is. And tonight, finally, is the already well-wished op'nin', for which I must get my ASS into gear.
-
We were on the Jurassic Park ride at Universal when it suddenly stopped for a while. It was pretty creepy, because until we were off the ride, there always felt like danger of a technical mishap. And while sitting there, it felt like being on a stuck elevator - you never knew whether the stoppage would be resolved quickly or take a long time.
-
Opening night vibes for real for DR CHAS SMITH & Co.

I liked the book The Andromeda Strain and the movie Coma......

From DR Laura:
I gave him a can of shaving cream to finger paint with. He was doing fine with it, until Grandpa got involved. Those two boys got wild. It was all over the room.

DR Laura I have enjoyed reading about your 4th of July.
-
Trying to finish The Brutalist.

Good morning, friends.

DR John G., I stopped reading The Goldfinch when the drug use among the characters became rampant. A real turn off.

In that video clip that DR Jrand74 posted yesterday, the comments say that the singing was actually done by Eydie Gorme.

I got home so late last night that I didn't have the energy to post this:

The food served included roasted potatoes, hot dogs with trimmings, steak, corn on the cob, and a green salad.
Dessert included ice cream birthday cake and root beer floats and fresh watermelon.

Nope. My counter is way off.

We had pretty heavy rain here, this morning. But now the sun is out. Go figure.

I feel so horrible for the Texas families. The current regime decimated funding for forecasting, degrading the systems, and then fired most of the scientists, and this is the result. Expect more.
-
TOD, cont'd.
I'm happy to say that, as it turns out, I have that Warner Archive DVD of The Terminal Man, and I've put it on top of the to-be-watched-soon pile. In recent months I've gone through several of those Archive movies that I'd never seen, and it's great fun to see what I've missed over the years. Some turn out to be worthy, and I think only a few were dogs that I've put in the thrift shop pile. I know there are more here, but I'll just have to find what they are by browsing the shelves.
I don't have Andromeda, but Kristi might. I'm thinking that's the one she always liked for the opening caption being her birthday, February 5, 1971.
BK also mentioned Get Carter, which I do have and I just watched it a couple of years ago. Very enjoyable, but it needs a second viewing.
-
I have read and thorough enjoyed Michael Crichton's Airframe.
-
Interesting photos DR singdaw.
I am glad that yesterday was a success.

We got a very small veggie box today. Almost all potatoes. A few plums and mangos, and two watermelons. Weird.

I read The Terminal Man and The Andromeda Strain in my youth and enjoyed them, but can't remember much about either one. I don't remember if I saw the movie versions or not. Coma also rings a bell. I've avoided all the Jurassic Park things.
-
I have read and thorough enjoyed Michael Crichton's Airframe.
I may have read that. But I don’t remember anything but the title.
-
I finished The Brutalist. I liked the epilogue and parts of the movie.
-
Michael G, what did you think of your French movie this week? It was Les Diaboliques, right?
-
Opening night vibes for real for DR CHAS SMITH & Co.
Ditto!

I am loving the previews on TV for Jurassic World; I would really like to see it.

I doubt it would have made a difference if the changes had not been made. DR John probably knows more about that than I do.

The Andromeda Strain is the first Crichton book I read, when it was first published in 1969. I couldn't put it down.
-
I thought the movie with Arthur Hill closely followed the book.
-
The 2008 mini series made a few changes ;D

I enjoyed the film version of Timeline though not as much as the book.

I have had Congo on my to read list and not gotten around to it.

I remember liking the film Westworld but on the tv series.

I liked the original Twister movie.

Michael G, what did you think of your French movie this week? It was Les Diaboliques, right?
Yes, that was it, and it was great. Hard to say much about it since I don’t want to give anything away for those who haven’t seen it.
-
Art. And the Artist.
;D

One thing that’s safe to say is that it’s interesting that there’s no score to the movie, aside from the opening and closing credits. The opening credits music is really creepy, setting the mood well. My wife found what she calls the “demented boy’s choir” particularly effective. The orchestral music sounded bitonal to me.

Watching an early Hollywood version of The Man in the Iron Mask, directed by James Whale. It's silly but effective.
