TOD:  the second season of The Lincoln Lawyer.  We just kept watching and watching, because we found it so compelling.  (There had been such a huge and effective surprise at the end of the first season, and I was especially interested as to whether the second season could match it in effectiveness.)

Likewise, the second season of "The Recruit" - which had some preposterous twists and turns, but that became part of the fun. The second season was IIRC only six episodes -  which made it easier to just keep watching until the end.

I achieved most of my goals yesterday: I began the pasta sauce, cooked the ground beef and sausage, onions, garlic, red and green peppers, and tomatoes. By then it was noon and I needed to lewt it cool so it woul;d be out of the way by 2:30 when I fed the cats. This morning, I will toss in the blackolives and mushrooms. When it cools, I'll put it into containers, freeze half, and put the rest in the fridge.

The one thing I did not accomplish was the towel rack, which is coming out of the tile. I had a tube of grout, only it was so old, it was no good. So that's on hold.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sOIAQx9useo

She gets laughs when she says thanks to the voters - the ones that voted for her!

And when she thanks Manny Azenberg for producing this play - "and lots of other things"

Very touching tribute to the late John Cazale at the end of her speech.

Title: Re: OUT AND ABOUT
Post by: ChasSmith on July 07, 2025, 09:11:22 AM
Several days ago I was going through some old photos looking for something, and there was one in the wrong section of this file box so I took it out to move it to a better place. But I looked at it for a minute, and it brought to mind a question I've had about exactly where something in Marina del Rey had been located years ago. So I thought, who can I ask? (Actually, one or two of y'all right here might even know! So stay tuned.) I decided that one likely place to ask on Facebook would be this page about the west side of L.A. (one of those "you know you lived in..." groups). It's run by this weird autocratic guy who examines every post before approving them and who likes to rant about submissions that don't follow his various rules and such. Bill somebody. BK might recognize this. He runs that Westwood page, too.

So he released my post SIX DAYS after I'd submitted it. And what happened? In one day it's gotten over a hundred "likes" and nearly that many comments. A couple of people even came close to answering the question I asked. But everyone loved the picture and it generated interest from a few different angles. (It's a shot I took while out flying one day, so other pilots got involved, too.) And I thought, if that one picture can inspire that much actual conversation, and thus far all of it positive, then I'm sitting on a gold mine here. I know I have things that should be scanned and posted, and once in a blue moon I do a couple of things, but then a lot of time goes by before moving on to others. I will also pat myself on the back for not just throwing a picture up there, but for providing some *accurate* detail and context to help inspire the responses I was looking for. Man, I'm good. Anyhoo, give me a few minutes and I'll post it here.

Here's the photo, me flying over Marina del Rey and grabbing the shot. Late 70s or early 80s, and I doubt I'll be able to narrow it down any better than that unless I find a group of other such photos it obviously belongs with.

My question was:  Where was Mr. D's Coffee Shop located? It was in its own standalone building. (Also, would the Van de Kamp's coffee shop on Lincoln Blvd. have been in this picture if it still existed then, or would it have been out of frame? That info is easier to come by, and I was mainly interested in finding the Mr. D's location.) I think I got my answer, but if any L.A. peeps here can chime in, please do.

Bruce, I am a bit confused about "Shooter".  You didn't mention what book you were compring it to though it sounded familiar.  Then you mentioned Reacher, not Bob Lee Swagger.  I believe the book is Point of Impact by Stephen Hunter.

I'm back. I'm not quite sure I was ready to be out for three hours, but I'm back and feel okay. Art's was empty when I got there. Then two idiots came in and they could have seated themselves anywhere but both decided to sit in booths across from me - not directly - one ahead, one behind. People are ridiculous. They both ate and ran, so that was good. As I was finishing up when three older folks walked in - older than me, that is. Like old. The waitress said, "Hi Bill" and then I knew exactly who it was and when he responded to her there really was no mistaking the voice - William Daniels, age ninety-eight, his wife, Bonnie Bartlett, age ninety-six. Didn't recognize the lady they were with.

I totally agree, DR Jrand74. I've always held onto the belief that just about every single thing you're looking for IS OUT THERE. Someplace. No matter what it is.

And really, there's nothing extraordinary about that picture. But I just happened to take it that day, and now it's coming up on nearly half a century of memories, for me and whoever. (Of course, I look at a picture I took, and ALWAYS think:  If only I'd captured several more...)

We did not.  Keith really disliked the show and I had problems with the lead actor, mostly because suddenly he has an accent.

In the novels I liked when there was a crossover with Bosch, and of course that is never going to happen in the tv series.

Trying to schedule a neurology appointment. I don't think the blood test results are so good. Suspect is myasthenia gravis, which I wish were spelled differently. Apparently that would affect muscles in the eye and mouth. I had the neurology referral, which I hadn't done until my doctor had analyzed the results. This makes me nervous.

Jane, yes, I am saying Lee Child got the idea for Reacher from Hunter's books.

Interesting.  I never really noticed similarities between them, except that they are both ex-military. I also read the Reacher books first.  Maybe if I had read Swagger when they first came out, and then Reacher, I would have had a different reaction.

And there is no cure but they have various treatments that apparently work well, so best to get on whatever those are right away.

Trying to schedule a neurology appointment. I don't think the blood test results are so good. Suspect is myasthenia graves, which I wish were spelled differently. Apparently that would affect muscles in the eye and mouth. I had the neurology referral, which I hadn't done until my doctor had analyzed the results. This makes me nervous.

MEGA VIBES THE NEWS IS BETTER THAN YOU EXPECT!

Since the visit is listed as urgent, apparently Cedars can't get me in urgently (weird to me) so they're reaching out to other providers in their network. I said I wanted someone who knows what they're doing and who has a top rating, otherwise I'll wait.

It is better to wait for someone good.

Just sent a message to my doctor to see what he thinks - whether he thinks it's safe to wait until Cedars can see me, or whether it's safe to go with some unknown provider.

I'm in "You know you grew up in West Los Angeles if you remember.......".  I think you are referring to the group I dropped out of, "You know you grew up on the Westside of Los Angeles if....".  Yup, I found it along with your post.

I rarely went to Marina Del Rey back then and don't remember Mr. D's Coffee Shop.  I asked Keith and he doesn't remember it either.

Yes, that's the one I posted in. So I should probably join that other one, right? Not to post the same thing, but is it a better place?

Not better, different.  I think the focus is more on childhood homes and activities we did.  For you, the group you joined seems much better.

Your group started after the other one, and he may have started it out of frustration with the first group.  Don't be bothered by how "careful" Bill is regarding the posts.  He reduces the junk posts including tons of generic questions.
