Well, you've read the notes, the notes guessed the mystery guest, and now it is time for you to post until the mystery cows come home.
-
And the word of the day is: PRAGMATIC!
-
And now - Dino at the piano.
-
Notes gamed. Showed.
-
What’s My Line? is the best of the best. Watch it when you want to see how far our basic discourse has fallen. But also to be entertained by great wit and drollery. The panel is, aside from everything else, good at the game. And John Charles Daly, with his on-the-fly adjudications. Masterful.

Pyramid. Dick Clark was at his most likeable and “real” as host of that show. And the game was exciting.
-
Match Game. Less urbane, but still witty, and like being allowed to hang out at a weird little grownup party.
And nothing’s funnier than Bill Daily’s reaction on this clip.

The first game show I remember seeing is Let's Make a Deal.

Good morning, all!
-
I slept well. Because the night before wasn't so good, I spent most of yesterday feeling very tired. I did finish the last cue, but I'm not very happy with it. I'll look it over today and see if I want to redo any of it.
-
I'm hoping for a quiet day. I need to clean out my email, which has got way out of control. I also haven't heard from Ann and Jen, so I don't know what's going on with them. I thought they were back from vacation last week, but there's been no word.
-
Good morning, friends.
-
And others.
-
Back from the long high school reunion weekend.
-
Not caught up; woefully behind.
-
But I am thrilled to have started BK's new book.

More anon.

Good morning, all.

The first game shows I remember are What's My Line? and Password. There must have been others before it that my mother watched, but my memories of TV in my childhood, when we got home from school, were Art Linkletter and Kate Smith.
-
Since we didn’t have a TV until I was 7, I wasn’t exposed to game shows too early. Once I discovered them, I became an addict. Concentration might have been the first, but Jeopardy was in the early mix. Password, What’s My Line, To Tell the Truth were up there. Then came $10,000 Pyramid, High Rollers, Match Game, Price Is Right, you name it. I didn’t warm to Wheel of Fortune for a long time.

Of course the puzzle master was good on that show.

I have a couple of hours of training today to proctor the bar exam starting tomorrow. Pay is good, but the next three days will be long.
-
Tuesday will likely be 6 a.m. to 7 p.m. Wednesday could be a repeat. Thursday will be only a half day.
-
I think I am ready to stir.
-
But not before finishing off this page.
-
I should be cleaning.
-
But I probably won’t.

Monday. I will be on my way in a bit to get some questions answered.

I was looking over the email responses to Tom Lehrer's death. We met when I worked at a used book shop, Theater Books, around 1984. He had come to New York to see the City Opera production of CANDIDE that had just opened at Lincoln Center. I saw the opening night performance, and it turned out we both loved the original Hellmamn version much more than the Hal Prince adaptations. I was envious because Tom had seen both the 1956 original and the unsuccessful 1958 London production. About two weeks later, I received an envelope, sent to me at Theater Books, containing the programme for the London production.
The last time I saw Tom was running into him by chance at a performance (the last, I think) of Bombay Dreams. I was walking past the Broadway Theater and he was waiting outside the theatre for the doors to open.
-
Good morning, all.

DR Elmore, I had no idea you had known Tom Lehrer, so that was a surprise when you mentioned it yesterday. And what a great story. A remarkable guy.
I was actually introduced to him (his recordings, not the person) by one Mr. Levine, who loved the records and songs for all the reasons, but who also pointed out the remarkable sound Lehrer got on the piano. Absolutely musical. He was solid in his playing, in his sense of timing in front of an audience, all of it.
-
Bombay Dreams. There’s a show I hadn’t thought of in a spell. Lots of water onstage.

Here’s another animated Lehrer gem.

Wow, Lee Remick was great too. Wonder if when the word was “Parade” if she considered using “Lansbury” and “showstopper” as clues.
-
I can’t be the only one who thought Mark Russell was a 2nd hand Tom Lehrer.
That's an interesting comparison. Tom Lehrer seems in the obituaries (like in the NY Times obit) to be described as having not all that much output over his writing career, but what he did was of extremely high quality. But Mark Russell was really cranking them out, like with his PBS show every two months for close to 30 years, and so much if it about being current and topical.
In The NY Times obit: "Mr. [Tom] Lehrer’s songwriting output was modest, but it was darkly memorable." https://www.nytimes.com/2025/07/27/arts/music/tom-lehrer-dead.html

He taught a musical theatre course in California. I would love to have taken it. I wish now I had asked him more about other shows he really loved.

My friend Bryan played some Tom Lehrer songs as a preshow for a show....maybe I will remember what it was someday....but after I heard them, I went out to buy some LPs that are still around here somewhere.
-
I went to State Farm to find out if I had figured out their new system.
I was very close.
Both cars are now on the same policy - and the declarations I got for both cars for coverage from Sept 2 to November 7 - as just for the balances of the old policies - so I will get a bill in October for the new policy.

Turns out I am NOT on the mortgage of my house - I'm on the quitclaim deed. My [dead] parents are on what's left of the mortgage so I have to take my papers to the Assessor's office - where my name appears on all letters....and talk to them.
Oh and in September my payment will go down $175 a month.
I couldn't cash the check made out to my [dead] parents so Tracy at the bank suggested I just add it to my Escrow account.....so $116 was added.

Modern composer Daniel Lentz has died.

I just caught up on reading the obits for Tom Lehrer, and there was plenty I didn't know. Not only that, he seems like an even more wonderful person than I always figured he was.
However, I just found that I somehow let my Lehrer LPs go at some point. I do remember intending to replace them with perfect copies sometime, and that obviously never happened.
Edit: Maybe I'll get the CD set that has it all and call it a day. But I loved those Reprise albums.

I helped with the Amazon bestseller status having bought it yesterday. I may not get a chance to read it for a few weeks, until Cabrillo Festival is over.

I just watched a movie BK talked about a few weeks ago: The Terminal Man. I, too, had never seen it and this was likewise one of those previously unwatched Warner Archive DVDs.
Most interesting. A lot of it was enjoyable, some of it was slow and not particularly suspenseful but still fascinating, and the cast is all perfectly good. I might have more to say about it, but there's a cat on me making it difficult to type on this iPad.
-
My book group had an interesting discussion with with month's book, Unfollow: A Journey from Hatred to Hope
by Megan Phelps-Roper.
-
I'm glad the discussion was good as I missed an important email from my library telling me I can now put a hold on The Impossible Fortune by Richard Osman.

It isn't as bad as I feared, I'm 12th in the queue. Had I been home I would likely have been in the top three.

I'm STILL watching this damn Three Stooges documentary - eight episodes, the last of which is a full HOUR. Someone didn't know what editing is, what being concise and not repetitious is. It's a real shame because there are great clips, home movies, and the history is fun. But it would have been much better as four or five episodes of forty-five minutes each.

Today, I got received a new phone from Amazon.
-
My current phone isn't bad, it's just developed a couple of little quirks that are kind of annoying.
-
It's an off-brand, but one of the selling points was that it has four times the internal memory that my current phone has (512GB vs. 128GB).
-
Page FIVE???
-
The listing didn't specify, but it has a slot for a microSD card for extra memory!
-
What did I say yesterday about page five, pray tell?
-
What in tarnation is going on here?
-
Page FIVE???
Don't blame me...I've posted quite a bit throughout the day!
-
I will not make any frivolous posts but it's crazy.
-
Not to mention lazy.
-
Enter page six, which looks hazy.
-
But fresh as a daisy.
-
Now, get me off this damn page.
-
Sadly, I don't think that will be happening.
-
Has George started reading a book?
-
The listing for the phone does say that it can hold two sim cards, so if you need another line but not another phone, you can have two in one.
-
Maybe it's for people who travel internationally, so you can have a US Sim card and a foreign Sim card.
-
That would be nice.
-
He could read it twice.
-
Let's roll the dice.
-
And pay the price.
-
And throw some rice.
-
Has George started reading a book?
Not yet. I haven't been home most of the day, but I'm driving my friend Shelly to an appointment in Tacoma tomorrow, so I'll bring my Kindle with me and read it while she's being appointmented.
-
New notes are up.
-
Up are new notes.
-
I've seen them.
-
I've read them.
-
I wrote them.
-
I also have been working on making some MP3s for Larry! ;D
-
I wrote them.
I'll read them.
-
One really annoying thing about the new phone is the short music that plays when it's turned on and off...it's really LOUD! :P
-
Even if I silence all the noise options, THAT music still plays and can't even be turned down!
-
I would hate to have to turn off the phone in an active shooter situation! It'll let everyone know where you are!
