I was looking over the email responses to Tom Lehrer's death. We met when I worked at a used book shop, Theater Books, around 1984. He had come to New York to see the City Opera production of CANDIDE that had just opened at Lincoln Center. I saw the opening night performance, and it turned out we both loved the original Hellmamn version much more than the Hal Prince adaptations. I was envious because Tom had seen both the 1956 original and the unsuccessful 1958 London production. About two weeks later, I received an envelope, sent to me at Theater Books, containing the programme for the London production.
The last time I saw Tom was running into him by chance at a performance (the last, I think) of Bombay Dreams. I was walking past the Broadway Theater and he was waiting outside the theatre for the doors to open.
