Well, you've read the notes, the notes had no Slinky, and now it is time for you to post until the Slinkified cows come home.

And the word of the day is: TANTALIZING!

Good morning, all!
-
I am up extra early since I must be picked up by Access-a-Ride extra early for my doctror's apointment.
-
BK, I agree with you. The news media could have shut down Trump years ago. In the last election, there was continual press on Biden's age and mental state. Next to nothing was made of the other deranged candidate;s age and mental state.
-
Good morning, all.
-
Agreeing with BK and DR Elmore re the media and ... you know. The NY Times helped him get elected in the first place, in 2016, with that last minute headline about "her emails".
-
I am up extra early because I'm accompanying a singer in one song at a church service Sunday morning, and I've been indulgent in sleeping in lately so I need to at least get used to getting up today and tomorrow so Sunday won't be so rough.
-
The TOD, kinda, sorta:
I've been following a thread on Home Theater Forum about some people's earlier Twilight Time Blu-rays not playing. Some are going through their copies and testing them out, and I'd been through a few of mine lately, but yesterday I decided to follow the list of the 2011-2013 ones someone posted and began watching and/or fast-forwarding through them to make sure they don't hang up anywhere. Fortunately, all is well. It's so weird how that happens, though, with one or two people finding virtually ALL of a certain kind of disc not playing anymore. You gotta wonder what's going on with them or their home environment or their players. But given that some of these discs are irreplaceable, I do feel good about knowing mine are still good. So in the past few evenings I've enjoyed reconnecting with all or parts of:
The Egyptian
Mysterious Island
The Roots of Heaven
Picnic
Pal Joey
Bite the Bullet
More to come in the following days. It's a fun trip. 2011 was an exciting time for some of us, thanks to the wonderful and much missed Nick Redman to whom we give thanks for a nice chunk of our personal libraries.

Re: Slinky
Were they a new thing when I discovered them in the mid-1950s? (Because I always think something was new when *I* discovered it.)
Yes, I had one because they were all the rage then and we had to have them. I don't know if I ever got very good at it (what did one do, anyway, except "slink" it back and forth?), but it was definitely a THING.
My mind also turns immediately to Play-Doh, Silly Putty, and the Hula Hoop as equally new (?) and popular must-haves. Again, because of the house and neighborhood I associate with these, I'm thinking mid-to-late 1950s.
-
Our Slinky was sent down the stairs many times - at least the first weekend we got it.
-
October 3. I am happy to report that my SS funds have been deposited in my bank account.
-
In about 20 minutes I shall be on my way to the getting place.
I am also going to lunch with my friend Vickie who must have something to discuss.
Time will tell.
-
Good morning, all.

Patricia Routledge has died.
-
I forgot Barbara Cook off my list yesterday.
-
Patricia Routledge has died.
:(
-
Sad news.
-
Getting has been gotten.
Checked out the computers at WalMart nothing of interest on the shelf.
-
What was it I got at Walmart the other day, besides a prescription refill?
Oh yes. I was out of coffee K-cups so I tried one of whatever house brand it is they carry. Theirs are still at 12 per pack, where most of the name brands have DOWNSIZED* to 10 per pack, AND the price was lower than even the sale prices at Shop Rite and all. The verdict? They're excellent! At least the dark roast one I tried. I'll be going back to try others.
*DOWNSIZING = the way to outright lie about prices GOING UP. Companies that do this to "soften the blow" for consumers (read: mislead) can go to HELL.

Notes slinked. Slunked.
-
All the “safeguards” have let us down.
-
We had slinkies. Inevitably they’d get kinda tangled up and ruined. Then the plastic ones came around, that’s all my kids know, and small ones are given out as cheap party favors.
-
I wonder if we can slink our way to page 2 before 11 a.m. (Eastern)
-
There are no stairs. Would that make it easier to get to page 2?
-
Or maybe make it more difficult?
-
But page 2 before 11 a.m. (Eastern) seems like an attainable goal.

With or without a slinky

Almost there.

WOW! Four more 5-starAmazon reviews this morning. This one really astounded me. I thought I was writing comic tales about two fantasy versions of my cats, and my friend Don Skirvin, who's a wonderful composer, saw more than that.
It’s more than charming—though it’s absolutely that. These stories invite you into a world where cats talk, sing, and dance, and somehow, against all odds, a grumpy old man finds his way from isolation to love, with kitty litter crunching underfoot like breadcrumbs leading home. I adored every page. You will, too.
I’ll admit, I know Larry. I even had the privilege of reading early drafts. But none of that prepared me for the emotional depth and quiet magic of these tales. They wrapped around my heart like a warm blanket on a cold day, and I didn’t want to let go. Larry doesn’t flinch from life’s shadows—he walks through them, and that honesty makes the light shine brighter.
You’ll believe in second chances. You’ll root for the cats and the curmudgeon as they stumble, grow, and face the unknown together. And when you reach the final chapter, I suspect you’ll find yourself quietly undone, just as I was. Verklempt, yes—but grateful. Because opening your heart to the whimsical, tender adventures of West 82nd Street is its own kind of redemption.

Were they a new thing when I discovered them in the mid-1950s? (Because I always think something was new when *I* discovered it.)

I still see them for sale in stores.

Stupid question, probably, but:
I found a few sheets of stamps buried in a desk drawer. I don't even remember getting these, or how many years ago that must have been. But are old stamps still good to use, as long as they add up to the right amount of postage?
-
I'm up, I'm up - for now. I fell asleep on the couch at one and slept until three. Got up, got in bed. Then maybe a couple of hours after that. Not enough.
-
Had to figure out the sides for the audition next week, so that's done.
-
Chas, this may not answer your question if these are VERY old stamps, but
I've been using stamps that I know I bought a few years before the pandemic, and everything I've sent out recently with those stamps seems to have reached its destination, checks mailed were cashed, scripts sent out by snail mail responded to.
But I'd add a question: Is there a way of making sure there's no collectors value to any of these?
-
Google's AI says this about using very old stamps.
"AI Overview
Yes, unused United States postage stamps from 1860 onward are still usable for their face value to meet current postage requirements, though you may need to combine multiple stamps to reach the correct rate. "Forever Stamps" are always valid for the current domestic First-Class Mail rate, while older stamps with a specific numerical value will still be worth that amount, requiring you to add more stamps to meet the current postage cost. You cannot use stamps that are taped or re-glued, and some older special-use stamps may no longer be valid.
How to Use Old Stamps
Combine stamps: If you have older stamps with a specific value (e.g., a 5-cent stamp), you can combine them with other stamps to reach the current postage amount for your letter or package.
Use Forever Stamps: If your old stamps are "Forever Stamps," they are always valid for the current domestic First-Class Mail rate, no matter when you bought them.
Check for invalid types: Be aware that some older stamps were for special services (like special delivery or certified mail) and are no longer valid for general postage.
Important Considerations
Condition: Stamps must be in good condition and have their original adhesive to be valid.
Postage requirements: You are responsible for ensuring the total value of the stamps on your mail piece equals the correct postage for its weight and destination.
Special services: Stamps for specific services, like Registered Mail or Certified Mail, are generally not valid for standard postage. "

I had one big (original style) Slinkie and several smaller metal ones painted in various colors. They just sat on my piano and then I got rid of them at a garage sale. But they were fun when they were new.

Ladies and Gents,
The tuna pasta salad is wonderful.
I think I used a bit more red onion than BK goes for. But I love onion and I'm the only one here to eat this batch, so it's all good. I diced it very fine using one of those hand choppers. I'm pleased with how well everything blended together.
Observation: One 16-ounce package of this is HUGE. :) I just ate a large bowl of it, and the container in the fridge looks like I barely scraped the surface.

I guess that Piaf stamp post is also in honor of Marion Cotillard (Oscar winner for playing Piaf) being a regular in the brand new season of THE MORNING SHOW
And it seems Juliana Margulies is nowhere to be found in the new season, season 4 of THE MORNING SHOW
and SPOILER
You'd have thought Jon Hamm was gone from episodes 1 and 2 of season 4 - but they don't make his reappearance on screen in episode 3 a real surprise, since he's prominent in the credits for episode 3 of season 4!
-
I’ve sent letters with stamps without the “original adhesive” before. They arrived.
How did the stamps stick to the envelope? Did you use scotch tape?
I used something like Elmer's glue or double-sided tape.
-
Decided not to make pasta today - maybe tomorrow. Today is orange chicken, extra crispy, from City Wok. Should be here shortly.
-
ChasSmith - sounds like you did a fine job. When I first began making it for the Christmas Eve Dos, I used an entire red onion - it was fine that way. I just use a bit less today for the personal batches. For the Do I probably use two-thirds these days.

Bruce Vilanch made this post on Facebook:
"for those of you who are keeping score, in the new stephen king picture THE LONG WALK, two guys are killed while taking a dump. actually, one of them lives, but he has dumped his last. this tops the current record-holder, JURASSIC PARK, in which a guy is eaten by a dinosaur while taking a dump. the guy, not the dinosaur. dinosaur dump does figure into the plot a bit earlier, when laura dern is forced to sift through some to find out why some mammoth creature is down for the count. this is jimmy fiddler with the hollywood minute."
I had to respond and did, thusly:
"The dump scene, as it's now referred to by executives in the hallowed halls of studios, is a must in all movies. The first thing that happens in the motion picture Malcolm and Marie is that Marie, played by Zendaya, goes to the bathroom and takes a dump. Whether she washed her hands after remains unknown because that son-of-a-Barry Levinson visionary dump director, Sam Levinson, doesn't show us. But every movie I see these days has a sitting on the toilet scene. This is called Realism in Neo-Hollywood. One need only look at the greatest dump scene in the history of motion pictures, which opens the motion picture, Babylon, directed by another visionary dump director named Damien Chazelle, who, of course, under his real name (little known fact ahead) Damian Thorne, was and is the son of Satan. And just yesterday, in Jimmy Fidler's column, I read that Disney is doing a live action animated film called Humpy Dumpy, based on Humpty Dumpty but with all the "T"s left out of the script. It is the first mainstream film in which no "T"s are allowed. It is an amazing time to be in the dumpster known as the show business. Thank you for listening, Sincerely yours, George Christy."

Made a little art trade - something I didn't care about sitting in the garage for years for something I did care about - it was priced really low to begin with and I'd "saved" it in my eBay cart, but then wrote the seller and we worked out our trade, which took a couple of days, and so this pretty thing will be on its way to me Monday. It's a huge compendium of Parker from Viking, part of a series they did way back when called The Viking Portable Library - I have a first edition of this in the garage - this is a 1983 reprint which the artist was commissioned for. She's done quite a bit of illustration art, but now just paints for herself. I checked out her site - lovely stuff and really inexpensive. One of the paintings I liked in her gallery was 245 bucks. I mean, come ON.
-
The artist did it from a very famous photograph of her, which you can find in Google images by just searching her name. It's remarkably close to the photo, eerily so. Painting is in oils.

Listening to Arundhati Roy’s memoir, Mother Mary Come to Me. Her mother, who had the girl and her brother refer to her as Mrs. Roy, is a creature right out of a gothic novel. A person whose demons would terrify even the strongest person.

Inundated with fruit flies. My 3 traps have worked over the last couple days. Population is dwindling.
Groan. Good news the polulation is dwindling.
Fly paper works too.
-
Wow. That doesn’t fit my image of Dorothy Parker. It’s missing the cocktail and cigarette.
LOL, yup.
-
But it is beautiful and sad.
That it is.
-
Will there be a recipe for shoo fly paper pie in your new book, DR John G.?
-
Loved Patricia Routledge in "Keeping Up Appearances." I was also fortunate to see her in "The Solid Gold Cadillac" in London.
Lucky you.

Thanks again DRs George and Jane for the Wordle words!
You are welcome.

Patricia R. at her very best.

Never hypothetically ask yourself if the person in front of you can go any slower.
Because the answer is: Yes.
;D
-
"The dump scene.....
That was interesting ;D
-
Keith said Wordle was difficult today, and was surprised he got it in three.
-
I was sure the painting was Olivia DeHavilland.
-
I saw a dump scene on Broadway once, during La Bête.
-
I've heard of "dump cake" recipes, but I think that's a bit different.
-
At least, I hope so.
-
I watched the first half hour of 28 Years Later and fast forwarded to the last half hour. No. Just no.
-
What a waist of time.
-
I made a dump cake once.
-
Will there be a recipe for shoo fly paper pie in your new book, DR John G.?
Shoofly pie, yes.
-
I wonder if one of BK's future books should be a collection of his One From Column A essays.
I've been thinking about it for years. A lot of work if I were to do it, but there are some really fun things in it.
-
But the reality of it is that a lot of it ended up in various books.
-
They were so fun and carefree and off-the-wall. Always laugh-out-loud funny.
-
Did anyone ever guess it was you before all was revealed?
-
I had a slinky growing up. I remember getting it to walk down the stairs.
-
But, unlike Purlie, I never got to Walk Him Up the Stairs.
-
We are approaching Rupert.
-
From the right direction.
-
One more.

-
Good night, friends.
-
And others.
-
Approaching Rupert is not the title of my next novel.
-
Starting a Robert Ryan noirish western called Inferno. Rhonda Fleming costars.
-
It’s not very good, but Robert Ryan is solid.

This list of the 80 best-directed movies is atrocious.

I drifted back to Marlow. I like two episodes for a murder, rather than the whole season.
-
There were many guesses about The Real A, especially at the start, and those were really fun. One person guessed me, but I did what I did with all the other guesses and just had fun with it. In the very last column I revealed it using the same device I used for the reveal at the end of Writer's Block.
-
Finally finished Play Dirty.
-
More in the notes about it.

Sonny Curtis sings "Love Is All Around" live - (the second part of the lyric sounds a little, well, objectifying, so it may be for the best that we only knew the first part)

That's very cool, Freddie! I had no idea that the original concept was more country.
-
My favorite version (and the only cover version that I had known about) was Joan Jett and the Blackhearts' cover:

Made a little art trade - something I didn't care about sitting in the garage for years for something I did care about - it was priced really low to begin with and I'd "saved" it in my eBay cart, but then wrote the seller and we worked out our trade, which took a couple of days, and so this pretty thing will be on its way to me Monday. Can anyone guess who the woman in the painting is?

I must confess that I don't know...but that's not surprising. :-\
-
(And I haven't caught up with the posts, yet. ::) )
-
Here is the answer to the painting. The cover of the book it was created for.

Very cool! Congrats on the acquisition, BK!

Irving Berlin wrote this song about Hitler in 1941. How timely it feels.

She’s great in the live video of Pirates of Penzance in Central Park.
Absolutely! :D

Tonight at cards at mom's house, we played two games of Phase 10 and I won both! ;D

New notes are up.

Up are new notes.

I've seen them.

I've read them.

I wrote them.

They are fully cooked and ready for reading.

I don't do raw notes - or as the Japanese call them, Sushi Notes.
-
I do meat and potatoes notes.
