Title: NOSE TO THE GRINDSTONE
Post by: bk on January 03, 2026, 12:16:22 AM
Well, you've read the notes, the notes had their nose to the grindstone, and now it is time for you to post until the nose to the grindstone cows come home.

I forgot to mention, after the horror show of the cramped hands, yesterday was a complete day and evening with not a single cramp. Isn' that weird?

Topic of the Day:  I've never made a big salad, but one that I remember enjoying was from the local Brewery City Pizza.  They used to have a "family" salad that was, I suppose, for the table to share.  One time, I had the whole thing all by myself.  It's all that I ate, so even as a family salad, it wasn't a lot of calories...quite filling, though.

DR John G, I spoke to Hugh Martin several times in 1998, when I was working on The Boys from Syracuse for Encores! He had a great sense of humor, especially about himself and his own work, and I found him absolutely charming. I sorta feel the same way about the score for High Spirits. I think the music and lyrics are great - for reasons I'll never know, "If I Gave You" breaks my heart - and I would love to see Martin's original sketches; I would love to know what Harry Zimmerman brought to the arran gements in his orchestrations, which I think are really good. The wonderful overture for the show was written by Luther Henderson.

Always fun to read the classic online spoof

STEPHEN SONDHEIM DISSECTS THE JARDIANCE JINGLE
https://www.mcsweeneys.net/articles/stephen-sondheim-dissects-the-jardiance-jingle

Over the years, in later versions of the commercial, the makers of the commercial have corrected this misplaced accent:
"Also, unless I’m mistaken, throughout the English-speaking world, it’s pronounced story, not stor-EEE."

Jim’s used to have the most hilarious billboard and I could never tell if it were intentional. Imagine on one side a huge photo of a cowboy’s crotch with a large rodeo-style belt buckle at the top. Then a smaller image of his backside. The tagline was “Meat me at Jim’s.”

The only arrangement Hugh did was "Sing for your supper." I did the "Come With Me," and that duet of "The Shortest Day of the Year," which was supposed to be a solo for Rebecca Luker's character in the original libretto was a faux duet put together by Rob Fisher. I never knew if that happened to give Malcom Gets more to sing or if it was a harebrained idea from that great harebrained director Susan Shulman. Ugh.

DR George, you might think about using earthquake hangers.  I'm sure they would be easy for you to do.

It could be something to think about.  My two bathroom mirrors are pretty much the only heavy things that are hanging that aren't secured.  All my pictures are posters in light frames, or just canvases over stretchers, nothing else in a frame.

There is a couple in our building we are friends with.  They usually go to the gym at the same time as we do.  She surprised me when she got on the treadmill next to me and was also wearing a mask.  Once the guy on the other side of me got off I took my mask off, and since the person on the other side of her got off she also removed her mask.

Title: Re: NOSE TO THE GRINDSTONE
Post by: bk on January 03, 2026, 07:38:47 PM
Act two ran fifty-five and is ten minutes too long- but in that act the line calls were way too frequent, and then they'd go back a few lines and do it again, etc. I don't think it will be hard to get it down - the entire courtroom scene was too slow so if we shave five minutes off that fifteen or twenty, we'll be very close.

After the run-through, we went back to the top and I got through the first half of act one doing detail work. I changed some blocking, added a bit of ography, changed an entrance location, and worked on the timing.

My favorite salad has to be a traditional Greek salad. No lettuce. Just ultra-fresh tomatoes, Kalamata olives, bell peppers, red onion, maybe capers and a slab of feta cheese on top. Drizzle your finest olive oil on top and sprinkle a little dried Greek oregano over the whole plate.

DR George, does the cashout voucher come out of a slot machine?

Yes.  Whenever you're done, there's a "Cash out" button on every machine for you to print the voucher.  You can either actually get the cash (there are kiosks or you can go to the info desks), or you can put it in another machine and continue playing with that amount, or you can add cash at each machine, or you can actually take home the voucher and give it as a gift.  The voucher can only be used, of course, at that specific casino.

They would make a horrible mess if they fell off of the wall and shattered.

Uhhh...yup.
