Actually the fact that Portland was ever even considered "in" makes me laugh.  Heartily.

I'm up, I'm up - the sun is shining and I'm trying to do the same.  Talk about strange dreams - in one I was giving Bette Davis little pointers on her singing, and then, later, I was doing the same for Neil Sedaka.  Go know.

Jrand isn't here to explain the dreams, but my thoughts:

Neil Sedaka is on your mind because of CALENDAR GIRL to remind you to get a new calendar.

As to Bette Davis, maybe because it's almost New Year's - Eve.

During my Christmas sojourn I came across a biscuit I've not had before; Carr's Cheese Melts. A bit of cheese on these biscuits goes down a treat. The biscuits melt and crumble in the mouth. I believe they are available in the US although I don't know how widely.

End of commercial break.

And...

Just another friendly reminder:

Monday, January 2, 2012, is a Federal Holiday (since January 1, 2012, falls on a Sunday). So no US Post Office Mail service that day either.

Ah, but since I'm hourly with no holidays or vacation time, that means four 10-hour days or lost income.

Listening to early k.d. lang after too much Steve Lawrence and "What Makes Sammy Run." "Angel with a Lariat." I think it's her best album all these years later. What a raucous, wonderful instrument her voice is, and she sings as if there's no limit to what it could do. Like a child before it learns that it can't fly.

Going to "Girl with the Dragon Tattoo" tonight. Hope it's a 10th as good as the Swedish version, even if David Fincher directed it. His track record is spotty in my book. I liked "Se7en" and parts of "Fight Club," "The Social Network" and "Zodiac" but found much of his other stuff overrated. And after the notes from bk, I don't plan to watch him in any "making of ..." documentaries.

A vegetarian I work with said all of the vegetable dishes tasted like meat. I guess that means it's smoky. But if we could that, more kids might eat their vegetables.

New York Times review of Alan Bennett's "Smut" made me put it on hold at the library. Sounds fun.
