Happiest of birthdays to DR Jane!

I first really heard "Take Five" some 15 years ago, on a sampler CD that someone left in my office (Cornerstones: Sony Legacy), and was just blown away. I was never a big jazz person, but that piece just jumped out at me and grabbed me by the throat.

TOD:
Streisand's "Not While I'm Around" and "Adelaide's Lament," first heard in my late teens, sent me on a lifelong exploration of Sondheim in particular and musical theater in general. I was probably heading that way anyhow, but those were the pioneers. Rush's "Hemispheres" album turned me on to their unique sound. My parents played a mix tape of Tom Lehrer and Flanders & Swann around me when I was a wee lad, and I've been singing "novelty" music ever since. Most recently, the "Goat Rodeo Sessions" supergroup formed by Yo-Yo Ma, Chris Thiele, Stuart Duncan, and Edgar Meyer performed their composition "Attaboy" on the Colbert Report, and I spent the next month frantically playing it for EVERYBODY I knew.

DR SINGDAW's ribbon posted yesterday reminded me of the time Dom DeLuise was on the Tonight Show starring Johnny Carson.

Dom was talking about one of the movies he had made with Burt Reynolds and was going on and on about handsome Burt was and what a ladies man he was.  Johnny finally said: "Well, he puts his pants on one leg at a time, just like anyone else."

And Dom replied: "Yes, but he has more opportunities to take his off....."

The audience laughed for quite a LONG time while Johnny tried not to.

TAKE FIVE.

I shall have to think about the TOD, and I am enjoying the lists of other DRs so far.

Congrats to DR VIXMOM on her millstone.

Monday morning greetings!  Well, our Sunday didn't unfold anything like we'd intended.  Richard and I were going to visit a church in Dayton in the morning and attend our local MESSIAH performance in the afternoon.  He'd complained Saturday evening of some stomach upset, so we decided to cancel the Dayton church visit.  He got up yesterday morning thinking he was better enough to continue with our afternoon plans, but crashed about 1pm and decided about 4:30 that he was sick enough for Paramedic Rob to take a look at him.  Rob suggested we drive Richard to the ER, so we arrived about 5pm and were there until 11.  They performed all kinds of tests and diagnosed severe gastroenteritis.  The good news is that it's not something serious, but the bad news is that it's highly contagious.  We're washing our hands a lot...

Dave Brubeck used to live in Palenville, N.Y., the next town over from my old home, Catskill. Love his music and got to hear him a few times, always a treat.

He actually died on Dec. 5, 2012.

TOD:

When I was 2 or 3 years old, the soundtrack to Mary Poppins was it.

Then, when I was 12, hearing the score for A Little Night Music changed it all again.

A Long Last Love introduced me to Cole Porter at age 15.

Mahler's Symphony No. 1, Titan, was another musical milestone. I was about 18 or 19 then.

...I was dreaming about this Dreidel Song and it's layout:
opening
verse 1 in D
transitional material
verse 2 in F
transitional material
verse 3 (key)?
Coda

May I suggest C-flat?

DR ChasSmith - you need to take a look at this service/product:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h-hA17bB7lo

I know of it but haven't had the opportunity to use it.  (I think there's a trial version...)  It would certainly appear to be a godsend for contemporary scores, if a bit pricey for venues that can barely budget enough to pay their musicians a decent amount.  Thanks for the heads up!

This was also reported on the Criterion Forum today by a highly respected film researcher, and elsewhere by a few others in the biz.  It apparently derived from an anniversary reposting of the NY Times obit.

It helped me learn that he died on the day before his 92nd birthday. A great run with so many wonderful gifts for us to remember him by.

OMG is right, DR ChasSmith.  Fortunately, the ER was very quiet last night and I had Paramedic Rob to help me get Richard there.  As soon as we were settled, I made him call his wife to pick him up so he could get some more sleep before going to work at midnight.  He had just left the house when we got home, but called to check on us before going on duty.
