Watching an oddity called Angels Over Broadway with Douglas Fairbanks Jr., Rita Hayworth, and Thomas Mitchell as a drunken Eugene O'Neill type. Ben Hecht wrote and directed the movie. It's short, not even 80 minutes long, but it's a surprisingly effective little melodrama (in the best sense). Hayworth was a nobody when it was made, and she's quite good.

It's part of a box set with a couple of other Hayworth movies including Down to Earth and Music in My Heart, with Tony Martin singing a Wright and Forrest score. A few of the other movies include The Solid Gold Cadillac, The Marrying Kind and It Should Happen to You, all with Judy Holliday.

The Sherman song also seems to have some publishing tie to Lawrence Welk, who recorded it - that kind of thing just gets messy. But I'll see how long the show is and then decide.

If Tacoma Little Theatre's history page is correct, the first live musical I would have seen was IRENE, although I have no memory of that show. The next four years I do remember: CAROUSEL, THE DESERT SONG, THE RED MILL, and OKLAHOMA. The next five years I saw: SOUTH PACIFIC, BRIGADOON, SHOW BOAT, ANNIE GET YOUR GUN, and ANYTHING GOES. Somewhere in there I also saw ONCE UPON A MATTRESS with Imogene Coca, King Donovan, and Edward Everett Horton. The first Broadway production was the all-black cast of HELLO, DOLLY! starring Pearl Bailey and Cab Calloway in 1969.

Television I remember the most was PETER PAN and A CHILD IS BORN. I would not have remembered A CHILD IS BORN if BK hadn't released the CD. Listening to it, I started flashing back on scenes from the TV production. Another reason to say, "Thank you, Mr. Kimmel."
