A POCKETFUL OF MIRACLES

Well, you've read the notes, the notes mentioned miracles and the need thereof, and now it is time for you to post until the miracle cows come home - they, of course, are also in need of some MOOracles.

TOD:

The pieces that come immediately to mind are Grieg's "Morning" and William Latham's "Brighton Beach"

Glad to hear Larry will be back soon.

It's been a tough week here in NYC, and I imagine many other areas are feeling it as well.

A bit early, but I'm up, and what are you gonna do about it?  Right?  Of course right.

Impossible to name favorites, though Mahler is certainly one of them.

And I'd be very interested to hear the Columbia Lenny recordings, remastered.  Most interested, indeed.

I am reminded that it was a post of BK's about the Mahler Sixth that was the tipping point on bringing me to this here board.

I'd been reading here for some time, but when BK posted of listening to the live concert recording of Szell conducting the Sixth, I knew it was time to jump in, join this wacky group, and stake my claim as one of the audience at that very concert.  (I attended at least two of those three (?) concerts.)

This was in the fall of my first year at school, and that experience was Part Two of my indoctrination into Mahler, Part One having been the friend of a friend introducing me to the Second (via Bernstein's recording) the summer before, as I posted not long ago.

In those days (1967) there were almost no recordings of the Sixth except for an old European one (Dutch, I'm thinking?) in which the orchestra simply struggled to get through the piece.  Or maybe the problem was the conductor.  But it was painful to listen to.  Then my friends and I found the Leinsdorf/Boston recording which was like a breath of fresh air, and finally - that very season - came Bernstein's, which was quite exciting.  We all wished there was a Szell one, but who then ever dreamed that they would eventually issue that live recording?  No one, that's who.

BK, it may be none of my business, but can you give any additional information as to the type of miracle we are attempting to achieve?

Speaking of miracles, I think it is a miracle that these butterflies flew hundreds and hundreds of miles to get to this spot to spend the winter.

Monday morning greetings!  At 1pm, Richard and I have to go to the nearby Presbyterian church for the funeral of another of his teaching colleagues.  This is getting depressing...

Beautiful!

Reminds me of Barbara Kingsolver's Flight Behavior, one of my favorite reads of 2014.

Thanks to the superior customer service of Delta, I actually managed to get all of my flights into on day yesterday and got home by 11:50 p.m.

Thank you, all, for the travel vibes. They really helped.

Now I have to go see if my luggage has arrived at the airport. That Delta couldn't get in time last night.

Thank you, also, to DR TCB for last night's birthday wishes and feel-better vibes for Richard.  He felt well enough for us to stop at one of our favorite sandwich places after the show yesterday and today he seems fine.
