The Herrmann is so wacky it's kind of entertaining in a non-entertaining way.  Distortion, weird miking (close but not in a good way) and balances that at times are almost funny.  And this recording was REALLY popular in the day.  His Mars is a full 2:10 slower than the Steinberg.  Funny, I typed Steinberg and it corrected to Sternberg.  I wonder if I type Sternberg if will change it to Steinberg?  Nope.

Screener arrived - something called Sully with Tom Hanks, directed by Clint Eastwood.  Will watch in a few minutes.

I normally love Herrmann's classical recordings but this is just so wacky it's wackily wacky in a wackily wacky wacky way.

I especially love the piccolos sitting amongst the violins.  Unique.

TOD:
My favorite pie has always been a chocolate black bottom pie that one of my parents' friends would make every year at Thanksgiving. I wish I had gotten the recipe from her back then, but I was only 10. I've looked for it online and I found something comparable and I've made it a couple times, but I never felt it was quite the same.
Mark and I also love cherry pie and we'll eat apple if cherry is not available.
Mark's favorite is pineapple pie which is hard to find, but very easy to make especially if you buy a store-bought crust.

I have several recipe variations on chocolate black bottom pie. Let me know what you're looking for and I'll see if any fit the bill.

Elmore, it was great to see you back here.

I listened to your song on Carols for a Cure today. Best song on that disc.

Is it just me or were there too many children singing this year? I haven't listened to the other disc yet.

I have been working on an orchestration for "Let's Not Talk About Love."  Funny lyrics.

Are you just doing "Let's Not Talk" or are you using any of "Let's Talk About Love"? I love the lyrics for both versions.

Back from an omelet, and English muffin, and a few onion rings (maybe five) - lunched with Richard Sherman and writer/director Larry Cohen, he of God Told Me To, It's Alive, Q The Winged Serpent, and many others.  And yes, it involves a project and I'm pretty sure we're going to do it at LACC next year, and should we, we will have a world premiere of a new Sherman Brothers musical.

Great news about the show.

I remember seeing It's Alive back in college at a film class. I should saw, I sort remember seeing it. I had broken my glasses but went to the movie anyway. And like most memories -- or at least mine -- it's all a blur.

Did someone say pie? My lips are smacking.

I think a well-made cherry pie is perfection that cannot be improved upon. This time of year, when fresh cherries are scarce, I made a cherry-cranberry pie with frozen Bing cherries and fresh cranberries.

I agree with your assessment of the cherry pie.  I've never had cranberries in a pie, though, so I can't comment on that.  Otherwise, I love cream pies...banana and coconut are my most favorites, but I wouldn't turn down a chocolate cream pie.  As for fruit pies, in addition to the aforementioned cherry, I love blueberry pie.  I'm fairly partial to peach or apple.  I'll put pumpkin on my list, too.  And there's always pecan pie, also one of my most favorite.

I'm drooling right now.

The second Brokenwood mystery is right up my alley: a wine judge is found floating in a vat of pinot noir. Wonderful.

Herrmann's PLANETS was a Phase 4 recording, so expect anything weird and gimmicky to happen at any time.

That, plus, I do think he was a little hit and miss when it came to interpretations of some standard repertoire.

Well, Herrmann's Uranus is two minutes slower than anyone else's and sound like no Uranus you've ever heard - it literally sounds like other music.

Finished watching Sully, about which more later, and listening to the final movement of The Planets as conceived by Mr. Herrmann.  And yet there are people on Amazon who LOVE this recording.  It's the BEST.  I think it's because Herrmann in Phase 4 mode tries to make it sound like one of his movie scores.  It doesn't of course, but I think that's what people are responding to - but oh that distortion in the first movement - how could they not have heard it and redone it?

Here's something interesting - Steinberg, who observes Holst's own metronome markings for the first movement, which is much quicker than most of the ponderous first movements runs 6:37.  Stokowski's runs exactly the same 6:37 so Steinberg isn't alone.  I'll tell you add a little natural reverb to the Stokowski and voila.  Other first movements that I've now heard run: 7:18 (Boult), 8:42 (Herrmann), 7:12 (Dutoit).
