LA has gotten over summer - very cold in the evenings now.

Is it still in the 60s?

I think it was colder than that last night - I actually had to leave the heat on, which I never do when I sleep.

Ravel's Mother Goose Suite is unbelievably haunting and beautiful.  It could be a film score.

Listening to a couple of symphonies by Milhaud.  But I think I'll go sit on my couch like so much fish for a while.

I have yet to hear something by Ravel I do not like, yet  I run hot and cold on Stravinsky and Prokofiev,

DR Jeanne recommended a natural pain killer called arnica.  I think I will try it.

Busy day today. We had gathering today, and I made eight dozen cookies, mini apple muffins, pumpkin bars, and a veggie tray.

Everyone ate the veggies.

I sat on my couch like so much fish, but I tried something interesting - I played the Dutoit Planets on the Klipsch speakers - if you crank the volume higher than I normally have it it's pretty good because at least you can hear the damn thing clearly and his performance IS very smooth.  I then put on the Steinberg and of course had to put the volume back to my usual level and it played perfectly.  On those speakers it lacks a bit of bottom that's on the Dutoit but I still like the performance better.

I'm just too tired to concentrate on a movie, I think.  But I may try something at eight and see how far I get.  Otherwise I'll finish the Milhaud symphonies, which I'm really enjoying and listen to more stuff and just zone out.

I'm now listening to a marvelous Samuel Barber opera - the shortest opera ever written - nine minutes long - and it's GREAT.

All right, enough with the lull already.  So let me be really controversial.  This nine-minute opera is called A Hand of Bridge.  Guess what one word is used over and over and is, in fact, the final word of the opera.

THAT'S comedy.  And let me add this to the other stuff I've already added:  If we lose our sense of humor we lose.  Every time.

Listening (finally) to Barber's Antony and Cleopatra opera, the original version which did not go over very well at its premiere - this is the radio broadcast - not great sound (but not bad) and I have to tell you I'm enjoying this a lot more than his hit opera, Vanessa.  I have the live recording of the revised version, which was cut down and had a few things added - I'll get around to that at some point.  But the music for this is really gorgeous and there's actually a lot of it that has no singing at all.  I grabbed this off You Tube - love that - I've been doing that a lot - using one of those converter things.

Thank you, Kerry. You are such a good sport when it comes to my cooking. :-)

Wae-Ling Goldstein begged to help cook a turkey, so we will cook ours on Thursday morning for a lunchtime meal. You are welcome to come.

That sounds wrong.  I am not sleepy tired.  More worn out and needing a day away from the play.  That will all change when we get audiences starting on Wednesday.
