Yesterday was supposed to be a day of not doing very much, but it wasn't.

After I woke up late and checked my e-mails and Twitter (don't hate me...I only follow Kathy Griffin, John Fugelsang and Lin-Manuel Miranda, and a couple of friends), I left to help my friend Margo move her daughter's bed so that she (Margo) could paint the room now that the daughter has moved out.  I also helped tape part of the ceiling while we chatted.

After that, I went home, parked my car and walked to the local Meconi's Italian Subs for a half Combo, Cosmo style (toasted) and a diet Coke.  It was all quite delish, as usual.  I also read my Kindle as I was eating, also as usual. ;D

I walked back home and remembered that my sister had asked if I could get a couple of things for her from Home Depot because she was going to Seattle for a concert.  I got the things and brought them to her house.  Her daughter asked if I could help with some things, so I did.  When I came home, I started playing my Nintendo and totally lost track of time...again.

Pay for my flight, room and board, and you can probably rent me. ;)

Jrand, during both Hairspray last year and Legally Blonde this year, people had trouble with mic tape sticking to their skin.  I don't know if you know this (or if this was the issue with the Sister Act cast), but some years ago I had learned that if you use alcohol swabs and clean your skin where you want to put the tape, that will immensely help the tape stick to skin.  I brought both casts inexpensive boxes of the swabs and everyone loved that.  Just a suggestion...if you and the cast didn't already know this. :)

Well, first I have to audition for a local production of A Christmas Story, and if I get in, I won't be available until the new year, and then my rates will automatically go up.

I finished that horrid recording of Porgy and Bess and am now listening to our new release - mono, a live performance, but so much energy and incredible musicianship comes across and I'll take that any day of the week - you have never heard a Porgy and Bess like this, I'm telling you.  The tempos are breathtaking and there are times when it's really funny - in fact the biggest laughs in this one are non-existent in the Houston version because the tempos suck the comedy out of it.  I don't know what else the director of this live version did, but boy did he understand this opera and how it should be played.  And Cab Calloway is something else.

Bruce, if you ever ate anything but hot dogs, I'd cook up something.

Now I have to take out that Houston recording. I don’t remember hearing what BK is describing, but it’s been years since I gave it a spin and I’ve upgraded my ears since. I think mine is still the vinyl, but I might have both. Have to go look.

BK, did you ever listen to that first Cleveland recording? Maazel conducting?

It’s an odd one. I need to re-hear that, too.

Oh, this looks interesting:

OMG. It’s interesting on many levels. 1975 was really a different world.

And I’d completely forgotten that P&B wasn’t even allowed to be staged then. But how was Houston able to do it? I know the MET staging in ‘83 or ‘84 was considered a breakthrough, but was that for more reason than just being their first production of it?
