Back from a completely sold out matinee - took everyone by surprise, in fact we had to add chairs as there was overflow.  Show wasn't a sharp as the two previous performances and the theater was too cold, which is a huge bugaboo with me because audiences that are too cold will not laugh.  I warn of this every time.  So, the new rule is seventy-three and no less and seventy-four if it still seems chilly.

The audience was fine, but cold.  I'm going to send a few actors notes for next week.  Our one gal who mangles lyrics was back at it again after two perfect shows, and the lines she screwed up were so easy and kind of impossible to screw up if you actually know what you're singing about.  She covers herself simply by slurring and not really saying words at all.  And she was slow in her second scene.  Several actors were tripping over lines, too, which is baffling two weeks into the run.  But the audience really enjoyed it and the talkback after was fun.  The Shermans loved it and after the talkback we went to Ca Del Sol, a nice Eyetalian jernt, since Tony's Bella Vista didn't open until four-thirty.  The food was very good.  So, a fun afternoon and now I'm listening to music.

Rob Stevens, the critic who I host here didn't really care for the show much at all, our first negative review - not exactly negative as there were things he did like, but three out of five stars and not a review I'll share.  I share the others because I know those folks actually did enjoy the show.  But I don't take any of them seriously, the good and the bad - as long as audiences are happy and in attendance then I'm happy.  Rob didn't care for Levi either so we're on a roll with ol' Rob. :)

Wednesday I had a rather big set-back with my elbow.  Today I was finally able to do my exercises and feel as if I am back where I was on Tuesday.  Combine this with our lovely day and I am feeling rather happy.

Our problem here in San Antonio is seeing a show in the summer when the AC isn't working. It can be a real unpleasant experience. But somehow that doesn't affect me outdoors at a Shakespeare in the park or anything like that.

BK -  at least you know for sure now - Rob was being totally honest about all the shows he has liked then.

It's actually nice to be welcomed back!  I may disappear more often because it's so much fun being welcomed back.  Nobody can miss you if you won't go away.

Maybe I'll post under an assumed name for a while, and then when "FJL" comes back after a year away, I can be like Dolly at the Harmonia Gardens.

Yes, FJL, I've been accused of hosting him because we're guaranteed great reviews.  And while he certainly has given us great reviews over the years, this and Levi are proof positive that it isn't true.  I think he genuinely hates the Group Rep (he's said this to me many times and really didn't want to review this).  He also likes more edgy parody stuff, the kind of stuff they do at the Fringe festivals.  It's all fine - not everyone is going to like everything.  The audience reaction and word of mouth are all that matters.  No one listens to critics in LA.

This happens when a reporter for a newspaper writes a play and the paper has to review it, or writes a book that is newsworthy so the paper can't avoid reviewing it.   The book thing seems to come up at the Times, since their reporters write quite a few books.

I think you should have a public feud with Rob, :) where you could refuse him tickets unless he'll report what his plus-one thinks, too.  I've been noticing even the Times critics have been mentioning what their date or spouse or partner thought when it differed from what the critic  thought.

Well, I must be off.  Today, we're scheduled for a 2-1/2 hour rehearsal, and it's all dance.  I don't think I'll need to be there the whole time, though.  I'm only in a few numbers.  "Up On Santa's Lap" is my big song, so I'm sure that that'll be choreographed today.

Have a good rest of the day, all!

Well, it turns out that I was wrong, and I was wrong.  I did need to be there the whole time, and we didn't choreograph "Up On Santa's Lap" today.  We went through "Ralphie To the Rescue."  It's his fantasy sequence during school where Miss Shields is kidnapped by a bad guy (all set in the wild west) and he and his gun rescue her.  We took the whole 2-1/2 hours and got through the song.  It was a lot of fun. :D

I'm running out of time before the trip, so I started writing my Christmas cards when I should have been cleaning house. (I will always have a valid reason for not cleaning house.)

Then I watched the extras on Night and the City, including a wonderful piece on the two soundtracks, the original by Franz Waxman and another that the Brits used.

I rarely did this when I was reviewing restaurants, but then again, except for coworkers, I rarely took the same person twice. But in those days, people took the time to develop a relationship with critics. People who hated my tastes could use that, just as much as those who liked my tastes could generally rely on them.

I just learned that there will be a Miss Fisher movie after all. I'd given up hope. Deb Cox, one of the writers on the TV show, is one of the writers. Essie Davis stars. Don't know too much else. Production was supposed to start last month.
